Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed a new drug conjugate called AS-TP, which combines an aptamer and the toxin triptolide for targeted treatment of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).
  • The unique linker in AS-TP prevents triptolide from being toxic until it's released in tumor cells, while enhancing the drug's solubility and ability to enter cancer cells.
  • This innovative approach showed significant anti-cancer effects in TNBC mice models, suggesting a promising direction for creating effective, targeted anticancer therapies.

Advances in nano-preparations for improving tetrandrine solubility and bioavailability.

Arch Pharm (Weinheim)

October 2024

State Key Laboratory of Southwestern Chinese Medicine Resources, School of Pharmacy, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chengdu, China.

Tetrandrine (TET) is a natural bis-benzylisoquinoline alkaloid isolated from Stephania species with a wide range of biological and pharmacologic activities; it mainly serves as an anti-inflammatory agent or antitumor adjuvant in clinical applications. However, limitations such as prominent hydrophobicity, severe off-target toxicity, and low absorption result in suboptimal therapeutic outcomes preventing its widespread adoption. Nanoparticles have proven to be efficient devices for targeted drug delivery since drug-carrying nanoparticles can be passively transported to the tumor site by the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effects, thus securing a niche in cancer therapies.

Subdural effusion associated with COVID-19 encephalopathy: A case report.

World J Clin Cases

April 2024

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Chengdu Jinniu District People's Hospital, Chengdu 610000, Sichuan Province, China.

Background: The precise mechanism by which severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) impacts the central nervous system remains unclear, with manifestations spanning from mild symptoms ( olfactory and gustatory deficits, hallucinations, and headache) to severe complications ( stroke, seizures, encephalitis, and neurally demyelinating lesions). The occurrence of single-pass subdural effusion, as described below, is extremely rare.

Case Summary: A 56-year-old male patient presented with left-sided limb weakness and slurred speech as predominant clinical symptoms.

Hybridization-based discovery of novel quinazoline-2-indolinone derivatives as potent and selective PI3Kα inhibitors.

J Adv Res

February 2025

State Key Laboratory of Southwestern Chinese Medicine Resources, School of Pharmacy, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chengdu 611137, China. Electronic address:

Introduction: Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases (PI3Ks) overexpression can elicit cellular homeostatic dysregulation, which further contributes to tumorigenesis, with PI3Kα emerging as the most prevalent mutant isoform kinase among PI3Ks. Therefore, selective inhibitors targeting PI3Kα have attracted considerable interest in recent years. Molecular hybridization, with the advantage of simplified pharmacokinetics and drug-drug interactions, emerged as one of the important avenues for discovering potential drugs.

Tetrandrine (TET) possesses multiple pharmacological activities and could suppress tumor proliferation via PI3K pathway inhibition. However, inferior antitumor activity and potential toxicity limit its clinical application. In the present study, a series of 14-sulfonamide and sulfonate TET derivatives were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for biological activities.

Bruceine A: Suppressing metastasis via MEK/ERK pathway and invoking mitochondrial apoptosis in triple-negative breast cancer.

Biomed Pharmacother

December 2023

State Key Laboratory of Southwestern Chinese Medicine Resources, School of Pharmacy, Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chengdu 611137, China; Institute for Advancing Translational Medicine in Bone & Joint Diseases, School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University, 999077, Hong Kong, China. Electronic address:

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), as the most aggressive subtype of breast cancer, presents a scarcity of miraculous drugs in suppressing its proliferation and metastasis. Bruceine A (BA) is a functional group-rich quassin compound with extensive and distinctive pharmacological activities. Within the present study, we investigated the capabilities of BA in suppressing TNBC proliferation and metastasis as well as its potential mechanisms.
