Background: Accumulating evidence has shown that the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome plays a crucial role in the inflammatory cascades involved in the development of acute pancreatitis (AP). However, the specific agonist responsible for activating the NLRP3 inflammasome in this process has not yet been identified. The purpose of this study is to clarify whether heparan sulfate (HS) works as an NLRP3 inflammasome activator to evoke inflammatory cascades in the progression of AP.

Tau pathologies are detected in the brains of some of the most common neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Lewy body dementia (LBD), chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Tau proteins are expressed in six isoforms with either three or four microtubule-binding repeats (3R tau or 4R tau) due to alternative RNA splicing. AD, LBD, and CTE brains contain pathological deposits of both 3R and 4R tau.

This meta-analysis aimed to describe the efficacy of bumetanide in improving infarct volume, brain edema, and behavioral outcomes in animal models of cerebral ischemia. Embase, PubMed and Web of Science databases were searched from their inception to February 2024 (INPLASY:202430023). Data on the animal species, stroke model, drug dose, time of treatment, method of administration, study quality, and outcomes were extracted and pooled in a meta-analysis.

Purpose: The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) combined with mirabegron therapy compared with mirabegron monotherapy in the treatment of female patients with overactive bladder (OAB).
Methods: In this randomized controlled study, 100 female outpatients with OAB were screened. Among these patients, 86 who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into the TENS combined with mirabegron treatment group and mirabegron monotherapy treatment group, with 43 patients in each group.

Purpose: Thyroid eye disease (TED) is characterized by a variety of disfiguring periocular changes. Vertical globe changes affecting the relative position of the eyelids are not well understood in patients with TED. This study seeks to determine the effect of orbital decompression on vertical globe displacement in patients with TED, without TED, and with intraconal tumor (ICT).

Background: Type C hepatitis B-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF), which is based on decompensated cirrhosis, has different laboratory tests, precipitating events, organ failure and clinical outcomes. The predictors of prognosis for type C HBV-ACLF patients are different from those for other subgroups. This study aimed to construct a novel, short-term prognostic score that applied serological indicators of hepatic regeneration and noninvasive assessment of liver fibrosis to predict outcomes in patients with type C HBV-ACLF.

Keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation in epidermis are well-controlled and essential for reacting to stimuli such as ultraviolet light. Imbalance between proliferation and differentiation is a characteristic feature of major human skin diseases such as psoriasis and squamous cell carcinoma. However, the effect of keratinocyte metabolism on proliferation and differentiation remains largely elusive.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) has become the popular critical post-operative consequences, especially cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, leading to an increased risk of mortality. However, no therapeutic effect about POCD. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria living in the gut and help to reduce the risk of POCD.

Objective: We performed a post hoc exploratory analysis of Remote Ischemic Conditioning for Acute Moderate Ischemic Stroke (RICAMIS) to determine whether hypertension history and baseline systolic blood pressure (SBP) affect the efficacy of remote ischemic conditioning (RIC).
Methods: Based on the full analysis set of RICAMIS, patients were divided into hypertension versus non-hypertension group, or <140 mmHg versus ≥140 mmHg group. Each group was further subdivided into RIC and control subgroups.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected many people around the world; fast and accurate detection of the virus can help control the spread of the virus. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is the gold standard method for SARS-CoV-2 detection. In this study, we improved the RT-PCR by proposing a novel method using dual double-quenched fluorescence probes.

In modern war or daily life, blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a growing health concern. Our previous studies demonstrated that inflammation was one of the main features of bTBI, and CD28-activated T cells play a central role in inflammation. However, the mechanism of CD28 in bTBI remains to be elucidated.

Background: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common neurological complication associated with valve replacement. Preoperative sleep disturbance is a risk factor for POD development, and nasal insulin modulates the sleep-wake cycle. This study investigated the beneficial effects of intranasal insulin pretreatment on preoperative sleep quality and reducing POD in patients undergoing valve replacement for rheumatic heart disease.

In diploid organisms, half of the chromosomes in each cell come from the father and half from the mother. Through previous studies, it was found that the paternal chromosome and the maternal chromosome can be regulated and expressed independently, leading to the emergence of allele specific expression (ASE). In this study, we analyzed the differential expression of alleles in the high-altitude population and the normal population based on the RNA sequencing data.

The conventional inactivated tetanus toxin plays an instrumental role in preventing tetanus. Nevertheless, the challenges associated with its production process, the potential for adverse reactions, and reduced effectiveness in vulnerable populations such as neonates and the elderly rise the need for a novel tetanus toxin vaccine. Recombinant subunit vaccine offer a viable solution, and the tetanus toxin fragment C (TTFC) is emerging as a promising candidate.

Background: Repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) often occurs in individuals engaged in contact sports, particularly boxing. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of rmTBI on phase-locking value (PLV)-based graph theory and functional network architecture in individuals with boxing-related injuries in five frequency bands by employing resting-state electroencephalography (EEG).
Methods: Twenty-fore professional boxers and 25 matched healthy controls were recruited to perform a resting-state task, and their noninvasive scalp EEG data were collected simultaneously.

To investigate the biocompatibility of coral-like barium titanate nano-piezoelectric coatings and the influence of ultrasound-excited piezoelectric effect on the early osteogenic differentiation. The barium titanate nano-piezoelectric coating (the coating group) was prepared on the surface of titanium metal by anodic oxidation, hydrothermal reaction and high-temperature annealing, and polished titanium specimens were used as control group. The surface morphology, composition, and crystal phase and hydrophilicity of the two groups of titanium specimens were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and contact angle meter.
