Article Synopsis
  • Evidence shows that osteoporosis is linked to the dysfunction of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), but many studies fall short in detailing the specific changes in these cells in osteoporosis.
  • In this research, BMSCs from ovariectomized and sham-operated rats were analyzed through RNA sequencing, revealing 14 mRNAs with significant regulation—7 up-regulated and 7 down-regulated—in osteoporotic BMSCs.
  • The findings indicate alterations in various biological processes associated with osteoporotic BMSCs, including cell viability and bone repair, and highlight potential RNA targets for future osteoporosis treatments.

Evidence from numerous studies has revealed the synchronous progression of aging in bone and muscle; however, little is known about the underlying mechanisms. To this end, human muscles and bones are harvested and the aging-associated transcriptional dynamics of two tissues in parallel using single-cell RNA sequencing are surveyed. A subset of lipid-associated macrophages (triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2, TREM2 Macs) is identified in both aged muscle and bone.

Background: In specific clinical scenarios characterized by poor tissue conditions surrounding a wound, achieving stable flap fixation with standard sutures can be challenging. The anchoring flap suture technique, which is commonly used for soft tissue-to-bone attachment in cases of injury, may be an alternative and effective approach.

Case Report: This report describes the successful application of the anchoring flap suture technique to repair a wound with exposed bone in a 39-year-old female patient.

The incidence of hyponatremia after spinal cord injury was reported to be between 25 and 80%. Hyponatremia can lead to a variety of clinical symptoms, from mild to severe and even life-threatening. Hyponatremia is often associated with diabetes insipidus, which refers to insufficient arginine vasopressin (AVP) secretion or defective renal response to AVP, with clinical manifestations of syndromes such as hypoosmolality, polydipsia, and polydipsia.

Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, the Fourth Medical Center of PLA General Hospital, Beijing 100048, China.

Sepsis is a severe life-threatening syndrome characterized by an abnormal host response to infection that can rapidly evolve into septic shock and multiple organ failure. Treatment of sepsis depends on early identification and diagnosis as well as adequate and timely anti-infection and multi-organ functional support. In recent years, pancreatic stone protein has been widely studied as a new biomarker for sepsis.

Adult tendon stem/progenitor cells (TSPCs) are essential for tendon maintenance, regeneration, and repair, yet they become susceptible to senescence with age, impairing the self-healing capacity of tendons. In this study, we employ a recently developed deep-learning-based efficacy prediction system to screen potential stemness-promoting and senescence-inhibiting drugs from natural products using the transcriptional signatures of stemness. The top-ranked candidate, prim-O-glucosylcimifugin (POG), a saposhnikovia root extract, could ameliorate TPSC senescent phenotypes caused by long-term passage and natural aging in rats and humans, as well as restore the self-renewal and proliferative capacities and tenogenic potential of aged TSPCs.

Background: Patients with bone metastasis often experience a significantly limited survival time, and a life expectancy of <3 months is generally regarded as a contraindication for extensive invasive surgeries. In this context, the accurate prediction of survival becomes very important since it serves as a crucial guide in making clinical decisions.

Objective: This study aimed to develop a machine learning-based web calculator that can provide an accurate assessment of the likelihood of early death among patients with bone metastasis.

Graph- and transformer-guided boundary aware network for medical image segmentation.

Comput Methods Programs Biomed

December 2023

School of Computer and Information Technology, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Background And Objective: Despite the considerable progress achieved by U-Net-based models, medical image segmentation remains a challenging task due to complex backgrounds, irrelevant noises, and ambiguous boundaries. In this study, we present a novel approach called U-shaped Graph- and Transformer-guided Boundary Aware Network (GTBA-Net) to tackle these challenges.

Methods: GTBA-Net uses the pre-trained ResNet34 as its basic structure, and involves Global Feature Aggregation (GFA) modules for target localization, Graph-based Dynamic Feature Fusion (GDFF) modules for effective noise suppression, and Uncertainty-based Boundary Refinement (UBR) modules for accurate delineation of ambiguous boundaries.

Osteoarthritis (OA) has emerged as a significant health concern among the elderly population, with increasing attention paid to ferroptosis-induced OA in recent years. However, the prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or corticosteroids can lead to a series of side effects and limited therapeutic efficacy. This study aimed to employ the Mannich condensation reaction between epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and selenomethionine (SeMet) to efficiently synthesize polyphenol-based nanodrugs in aqueous media for treating OA.

[Novel strategy of sepsis immunomodulation targeting dendritic cells].

Zhonghua Shao Shang Yu Chuang Mian Xiu Fu Za Zhi

July 2023

Translational Medicine Research Center, Medical Innovation Research Division and the Fourth Medical Center of PLA General Hospital, Beijing 100853, China.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are the major antigen-presenting cells that play critical roles in regulating both innate and acquire immune responses. In the state of sepsis, the number of DCs is obviously decreased with inhibited antigen presenting ability as well as abnormal cytokine secretion, thereby resulting in an impairment of T lymphocyte activation. Previous studies have demonstrated that the depletion and dysfunction of DCs appear to be the main causes associated with the development of sepsis-induced immunosuppression.
