Background: With the increasing aging and the popularization of medical diagnosis, the growing number of oldest old with lung cancer needs to be focused on. Several medical and physiological challenges often accompanying the oldest old cancer patients make the choice of the optimal treatment daunting. The current research suggests that people who get adequate treatment can benefit, but it is worth discussing which treatment will benefit them more.

The transplacental transfer of maternal antibodies to the fetus is a critical mechanism for infant protection and perinatal disease. Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) is a representative fetal disease caused by transplacental transfer of maternal IgG antibodies. However, it is unclear whether placental-related miRNAs are expressed in Rh-HDFN.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is caused by alcohol abuse and can progress to hepatitis, cirrhosis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma. Previous studies suggested that ameliorates ALD, but the exact mechanisms are not fully known. This study created an ALD model in mice, and the results showed significantly alleviating lipid accumulation in the mice.

Dietary astaxanthin-rich extract ameliorates atherosclerosis/retinopathy and restructures gut microbiome in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice fed on a high-fat diet.

Food Funct

October 2022

State Key Laboratory of Food Nutrition and Safety, Tianjin University of Science & Technology, No. 29, 13th Avenue, Economic and Technological Development Area (TEDA), Tianjin 300457, China.

: Atherosclerosis (AS) is the leading cause of ischemic disease. However, the anti-AS effects of astaxanthin and its potential mechanisms remain unclear. This study is aimed to investigate the function of astaxanthin-rich extract (ASTE) on AS and gut microbiota as well as the difference from atorvastatin (ATO) in apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE) mice.

Hypoxia-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis is the main contributor to heart diseases. Human leukocyte antigen F-associated transcript 10 (FAT10), the small ubiquitin-like protein family subtype involved in apoptosis, is expressed in the heart and exhibits cardioprotective functions. This study explored the impact of FAT10 on hypoxia-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis and the involved mechanisms.

Hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) induces pyroptosis in the setting of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Previous studies have shown that the expression of the miR-15 family is stimulated in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury or H/R-induced cardiomyocyte injury, and miR-15 is a promoter of cardiac ischemia-reperfusion or H/R injury. However, whether miR-15b-5p regulates H/R injury and cardiomyocyte pyroptosis and its mechanism still need to be further clarified.

Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical significance of the preoperative aminotransferase to albumin ratio (AAR) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after hepatectomy.

Methods: From five hospitals, a total of 991 patients with HCC admitted between December 2014 and December 2019 were included as the primary cohort and 883 patients with HCC admitted between December 2010 and December 2014 were included as the validation cohort. The X-tile software was conducted to identify the optimal cut-off value of AAR.

Patient-controlled intravenous analgesia with opioids after thoracoscopic lung surgery: a randomized clinical trial.

BMC Anesthesiol

August 2022

Department of Anesthesiology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University. No, 37 Guoxue Alley, Chengdu, 610041, China.

Background: Opioids remain the mainstream therapy for post-surgical pain. The choice of opioids administered by patient-controlled intravenous analgesia (PCIA) for thoracoscopic lung surgery is unclear. This study compared 3 opioid analgesics for achieving satisfactory analgesia with minimal emesis (SAME).

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most serious malignant cancers and has a high fatality rate. However, clinical strategies for the effective treatment of HCC remain lacking. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) with aberrant expression have been closely correlated with the occurrence and development of HCC.

Objective: First-pass effect (FPE), defined as successful reperfusion (modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction score 2b-3) with a single stent retriever attempt without salvage treatment, has not been fully identified in patients with acute basilar artery occlusion (BAO). The authors' aim was to assess the impact of FPE on efficacy and safety for patients with BAO.

Methods: The authors included data from the Acute Basilar Artery Occlusion Study (BASILAR) about patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy within 24 hours after symptom onset and compared the clinical outcomes of patients who achieved FPE with those who did not.

Medicine (Baltimore)

July 2022

Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, The First People's Hospital of Neijiang, China.

Rationale: Anlotinib is an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor targeting vascular endothelial growth factor receptor, and has been approved for the treatment of patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer who had received at least 2 previous chemotherapy and epidermal growth factor receptor/anaplastic lymphoma kinase targeted therapy regimens. Pneumothorax is a rare adverse reaction of this drug. Here, we present a case of pneumothorax following anlotinib treatment in a patient with lung cancer.

Ischemic stroke is one of the major causes of death and disability in the world. Currently, most patients cannot choose intravenous thrombolysis or intravascular mechanical thrombectomy because of narrow therapeutic windows and severe complications. Stem cell transplantation is an emerging treatment and has been studied in various central nervous system diseases.
