Coronary artery spasm (CAS) is a key contributor to the pathogenesis of acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). While smoking is recognized as a major risk factor for CAS, the relationship between cumulative cigarette consumption and infarction-related CAS across different age groups in STEMI patients remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between cumulative cigarette consumption and infarction-related CAS across different age groups through a retrospective analysis.

We read with great interest the systematic review and meta-analysis by Cigrovski Berkovic published recently which evaluated the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs). The study identified T2DM as a risk factor for the development of pNETs and linked it to poor tumor-free survival. However, due to the limited number of studies and high heterogeneity, the role of metformin in the diagnosis and prognosis of pNETs remained inconclusive.

Genetics of urinary bladder paragangliomas: a multi-center study of a Chinese cohort.

J Endocrinol Invest

December 2024

Department of Urology, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, 87 Xiangya Road, Changsha, 410008, Hunan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the genetic characteristics of urinary bladder paragangliomas (UBPGLs) in a cohort of 70 Chinese patients, aiming to better understand their heritability and genetic variations.
  • Results show that 38 patients had pathogenic variants (PVs), mainly in cluster 1A genes like SDHB and HRAS, with UBPGLs showing higher PV rates in cluster 1A compared to non-head and neck PGLs.
  • The findings indicate a diverse genetic profile among Chinese patients with UBPGLs, emphasizing the necessity for genetic testing to identify significant pathogenic variants.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a severe neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques and tau phosphorylation-induced neurofibrillary tangles. This review comprehensively summarizes AD pathogenesis and related factors, drawing on a wealth of authoritative reports and research findings. Specifically, we delve into the intricate mechanisms underlying AD pathology, including Aβ deposition, tau protein phosphorylation, cholinergic dysfunction, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial oxidative stress, ferroptosis, imbalance in the gut microbiota, and microRNA dysregulation.

November 2024

Hunan Province Key Laboratory of Typical Environmental Pollution and Health Hazards, School of Public Health, University of South China, Hengyang 421001, China.

This study explores the neuroprotective effects of resveratrol (Resv) against tri-o-cresyl phosphate (TOCP)-induced neurotoxicity in the spinal cord of adult hens. It is well documented that TOCP exposure causes significant neurodegeneration via mechanisms that involve endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and impaired autophagy. In this experiment, adult hens were assigned to one of four groups: Control, Resv, TOCP, and TOCP + Resv.

Background: Endothelial cells are the first and most damaged target cells during acute lung injury (ALI). Endothelial dysfunction increases pulmonary microvascular permeability, subsequently leading to pulmonary oedema and organ dysfunction; however, clinical treatments against microvascular permeability show poor efficacy. Herein, we aimed to explore the role of the Sigma-1 receptor (Sig-1R) in pulmonary microvascular permeability by constructing ALI animal and cell models, and further investigated the specific mechanisms.
