Rapid Construction of Liquid-like Surfaces via Single-Cycle Polymer Brush Grafting for Enhanced Antifouling in Microfluidic Systems.

Micromachines (Basel)

October 2024

Fujian Engineering Research Center for Solid-State Lighting, Department of Electronic Science, School of Electronic Science and Engineering, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361005, China.

Liquid-like surfaces have demonstrated immense potential in their ability to resist cell adhesion, a critical requirement for numerous applications across various domains. However, the conventional methodologies for preparing liquid-like surfaces often entail a complex multi-step polymer brush modification process, which is not only time-consuming but also presents significant challenges. In this work, we developed a single-cycle polymer brush modification strategy to build liquid-like surfaces by leveraging high-molecular-weight bis(3-aminopropyl)-terminated polydimethylsiloxane, which significantly simplifies the preparation process.

Article Synopsis
  • A multicenter randomized controlled trial in China investigated the impact of adding coronary CT-derived fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) to routine coronary CT angiography (CCTA) on the need for invasive coronary angiography (ICA) and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD).
  • The study involved 5,297 participants, showing that the CCTA plus CT-FFR group had a lower ICA rate (10.0%) compared to the CCTA alone group (12.4%) over a 90-day follow-up.
  • While MACE rates were similar between groups, the CCTA plus CT-FFR approach resulted in fewer cardiac events after one year (0.5%

Article Synopsis
  • A study conducted in ten Chinese cities from 2013 to 2023 analyzed over 418,000 outpatient visits for conjunctivitis in children, revealing inconclusive evidence regarding the impact of ambient gaseous pollutants on the condition.
  • The research found that higher daily concentrations of carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and ozone were associated with increases in pediatric conjunctivitis visits, with boys and younger children being more affected.
  • The study suggests implementing public health interventions to mitigate the risks associated with air pollution, especially during the summer months when associations were stronger.

Zhonghua Fu Chan Ke Za Zhi

June 2024

Department of Obstetrics, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Jiangsu Province Hospital, Nanjing 210029, China.

To explore the feasibility of using ultrasonic convex array probe compressing abdominal wall to increase success rate of external cephalic version (ECV) without anesthesia in full-term and near-term pregnancy. Totally 190 singleton and non-cephalic presentation pregnant women in 36-39 weeks of gestation performed ECV from April 2019 to August 2023 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University were analyzed. According to whether use the ultrasound probe compressing fetal breech or not, the pregnant women were divided into two groups: 81 cases in the probe-compressing group (including primipara 61 cases and multipara 20 cases) and 109 cases in the non-probe-compressing group(including primipara 72 cases and multipara 37 cases).

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play pivotal roles in gene regulation and their dysregulation is implicated in various diseases, including cancer. Current methods for miRNA analysis often involve complex procedures and high costs, limiting their clinical utility. Therefore, there is a critical need for the development of simpler and more cost-effective miRNA detection techniques to enable early disease diagnosis.

Purpose: Subcutaneous seroma formation (SF) is commonly seen after axillary bromhidrosis surgeries and its treatment can be challenging and long. Current prevention methods are not consistent, and the treatment includes repeated aspirations and drains, both are associated with higher risk for infections. The purpose of this article is to present a novel and simple technique of intraoperative hypertonic saline irrigation (IHSI) to axillary bromhidrosis subcutaneous dead space, which prevents postoperative SF and enables early drain removal due to reduced secretions.

Background: Target gastrointestinal cancers (GICs), encompassing esophageal cancer (EC), gastric cancer (GC), and colorectal cancer (CRC), originate within a single readily accessible luminal organ system and are diagnosable using endoscopy. However, endoscopy is an invasive procedure with low compliance and no plasma-based DNA methylation assay for the early detection of GICs.

Methods: Nine potential DNA methylation markers were identified and evaluated in tissue (n=60) and plasma (n=155) cohorts to select the most suitable markers.

J Transl Med

October 2023

Laboratory of Radiation Medicine, West China School of Basic Medical Sciences and Forensic Medicine, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610041, China.

Cancer remains the leading cause of death around the world. In cancer treatment, over 50% of cancer patients receive radiotherapy alone or in multimodal combinations with other therapies. One of the adverse consequences after radiation exposure is the occurrence of radiation-induced tissue fibrosis (RIF), which is characterized by the abnormal activation of myofibroblasts and the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix.

Butyrophilin subfamily 3 member A3 (BTN3A3) is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and functions as a tumor suppressor in multiple cancer types. Our study has revealed that in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), patients who express high levels of BTN3A3 experience longer survival times than those with lower expression. Further, we have observed that BTN3A3 inhibits the proliferation, migration, and invasion of ccRCC cells.
