Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by symptoms such as abnormal lubrication function of synovial fluid and heightened friction on the cartilage surface in its early stages, prior to evident cartilage damage. Current early intervention strategies employing lubricated hydrogels to shield cartilage from friction often overlook the significance of hydrogel-cartilage adhesion and enhancement of the cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM). Herein, we constructed a hydrogel based on dihydrazide-modified hyaluronic acid (HA) (AHA) and catechol-conjugated aldehyde-modified HA (CHA), which not only adheres to the cartilage surface as an effective lubricant but also improves the extracellular environment of chondrocytes in OA.

Tumor-derived cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has been exploited as an effective liquid biopsy biomarker for early cancer diagnosis. However, the fragmented and low-abundance nature in circulating blood pose challenges for highly sensitive cfDNA quantification. Herein, a multifunctional plasmonic biosensor termed Interfacial cfDNA Enrichment, Amplification and Sensing with on-chip Thermoplasmonics (INEAST) is developed for cfDNA-based liquid biopsy and lung cancer diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores factors that influence how well patients with hypertriglyceridemic pancreatitis (HTG-AP) reach their targeted plasma volume during treatment with double filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP).
  • A total of 82 patients were analyzed, with significant differences in factors like heart rate and triglyceride levels found between groups classified as 'up-to-scratch' versus 'non-scratch'.
  • Higher levels of triglycerides and fibrinogen were identified as independent risk factors, with an increase in triglycerides leading to a 5% greater chance of not reaching plasma goals, and each rise in fibrinogen increasing that risk by 74%.

The application of micro/nanomotors (MNMs) in the gastrointestinal tract has become a Frontier in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. These miniature robots can enter the gastrointestinal tract through oral administration, achieving precise drug delivery and therapy. They can traverse mucosal layers and tissue barriers, directly targeting tumors or other lesion sites, thereby enhancing the bioavailability and therapeutic effects of drugs.

Insulin autoimmune syndrome (IAS) is a rare cause of endogenous hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia triggered by insulin autoantibodies. Through extensive research on IAS in recent years, it has been revealed that the use of exogenous insulin by diabetic patients can result in clinical manifestations similar to those of IAS. This phenomenon is known as exogenous IAS (EIAS).

Objective: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is the most common psychological disorder in patients with stroke. It not only seriously affects the patient's functional recovery, quality of life, and ability to return to society but also increases stroke recurrence rate and mortality. However, the effectiveness of drug treatment is unpredictable and associated with certain side effects and low compliance.

  • Endometrial carcinoma (EC) is a common and serious gynecological cancer, but its causes and mechanisms are not fully understood; this study investigates genetic factors linked to EC.
  • Researchers used various analyses to develop a prognostic risk signature and identified key genes like RNF144A that are significantly involved in EC and could serve as potential biomarkers for treatment.
  • RNF144A was found to be a particularly important hub gene, with its expression levels negatively correlating with cancer severity, and its overexpression linked to increased cell growth and migration in EC.

  • Interest in treating persistent lateral ankle joint instability has increased, with many health professionals advocating for early intervention.* -
  • A meta-analysis reviewed 11 studies and found that surgeries to repair the fibular collateral ligament led to significantly lower complications and better scores on various assessment tools compared to untreated cases.* -
  • The study concludes that keyhole surgery may benefit patients with ankle instability, but further high-quality research is needed to validate these findings.*

This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the association between urinary tract infections (UTIs) during pregnancy and the risk of preterm birth (PTB). We searched multiple databases for relevant observational studies, categorizing them as UTI-based (comparing PTB incidence in women with and without UTIs) or PTB-based (comparing UTI prevalence in women with and without PTB). Using a random-effects model in Stata software version 17.

Microbiol Spectr

August 2024

Department of Immunology and Pathogenic Biology, School of Medicine, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, Shanxi, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MNK) in macrophages during infections, particularly focusing on its influence on pro-inflammatory cytokine production and macrophage function.
  • Inhibition of MNK in macrophage cells led to reduced production of key cytokines, tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-6, without altering their transcription levels, while knockout of MNK1 improved the cells' ability to digest and eliminate bacteria.
  • The research also found that MNK1's effects on phagocytosis and bacterial clearance are linked to the mTORC1 signaling pathway rather than the MNK1-eIF4E pathway, emphasizing the MNK1-m
