Human breast milk-derived exosomes and their positive role on neonatal intestinal health.

Pediatr Res

January 2025

Department of Pediatrics, Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, 510623, China.

Although the role of breast milk in promoting neonatal growth and maintaining intestinal homeostasis is well established, underlying mechanisms by which it protects the intestine from damage remain to be elucidated. Human breast milk-derived exosomes (HMDEs) are newly discovered active signaling vesicles with a diameter of 30-150 nm, which are key carriers of biological information exchange between mother and child. In addition, due to their ability to cross the gastrointestinal barrier, low immunogenicity, good biocompatibility and stability, HMDEs play an important role in regulating intestinal barrier integrity in newborns.

Background: Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) is a common complication following video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) that significantly impacts the quality of life of patients. Although multiple risk factors have been identified, no systematically validated prediction model exists to guide clinical decision-making.

Objectives: This study aimed to develop and validate a risk prediction model for CPSP in patients undergoing VATS for lung cancer.

Consensus remains elusive regarding the relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and endometrial cancer (EC). Our study sought to elucidate the causal association between CRP and EC, aiming to contribute to the understanding of this complex interplay. We primarily utilized the random-effects inverse variance-weighted method.

Coronary artery spasm (CAS) is a key contributor to the pathogenesis of acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). While smoking is recognized as a major risk factor for CAS, the relationship between cumulative cigarette consumption and infarction-related CAS across different age groups in STEMI patients remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between cumulative cigarette consumption and infarction-related CAS across different age groups through a retrospective analysis.

Purpose: Previous studies that evaluated the influence of melatonin supplementation on cancer-related fatigue (CRF) revealed inconsistent results. The present meta-analysis was performed to systematically evaluate the influence of melatonin on the severity of fatigue in patients with cancer.

Methods: Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were acquired by conducting a comprehensive search in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases.

Effect of continuous infusion in alleviating pain during male urethral catheterization.

BMC Anesthesiol

December 2024

Department of Anesthesiology, The Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, 410011, China.

Aims: The aim of this study was to explore whether continuous infusion causing lubrication can effectively alleviate pain during male urethral catheterization.

Methods: This prospective, multicenter, double-blinded study included 190 male patients scheduled for urethral catheterization. Patients were randomly allocated into four groups: Group A: the catheter was lubricated with paraffin; Group B: the catheter was lubricated with compound lidocaine gel; Group C: the pump continuously infusing with sterilized water; Group D: the pump continuously infusing with 2% lidocaine.

We read with great interest the systematic review and meta-analysis by Cigrovski Berkovic published recently which evaluated the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs). The study identified T2DM as a risk factor for the development of pNETs and linked it to poor tumor-free survival. However, due to the limited number of studies and high heterogeneity, the role of metformin in the diagnosis and prognosis of pNETs remained inconclusive.

Genetics of urinary bladder paragangliomas: a multi-center study of a Chinese cohort.

J Endocrinol Invest

December 2024

Department of Urology, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, 87 Xiangya Road, Changsha, 410008, Hunan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the genetic characteristics of urinary bladder paragangliomas (UBPGLs) in a cohort of 70 Chinese patients, aiming to better understand their heritability and genetic variations.
  • Results show that 38 patients had pathogenic variants (PVs), mainly in cluster 1A genes like SDHB and HRAS, with UBPGLs showing higher PV rates in cluster 1A compared to non-head and neck PGLs.
  • The findings indicate a diverse genetic profile among Chinese patients with UBPGLs, emphasizing the necessity for genetic testing to identify significant pathogenic variants.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how cervical disc degeneration relates to the bone quality of adjacent vertebrae in patients aged 50 and older with cervical spondylosis.
  • Significant differences in bone quality scores were found across different grades of disc degeneration, with higher degeneration correlating to lower bone quality scores in both the cranial and caudal regions of the vertebrae.
  • Grades 4 and 5 of disc degeneration were identified as key risk factors for decreased bone quality, highlighting a connection between disc health and vertebral bone quality.

SIRT1-Dependent Neuroprotection by Resveratrol in TOCP-Induced Spinal Cord Injury: Modulation of ER Stress and Autophagic Flux.

Toxics

November 2024

Hunan Province Key Laboratory of Typical Environmental Pollution and Health Hazards, School of Public Health, University of South China, Hengyang 421001, China.

This study explores the neuroprotective effects of resveratrol (Resv) against tri-o-cresyl phosphate (TOCP)-induced neurotoxicity in the spinal cord of adult hens. It is well documented that TOCP exposure causes significant neurodegeneration via mechanisms that involve endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and impaired autophagy. In this experiment, adult hens were assigned to one of four groups: Control, Resv, TOCP, and TOCP + Resv.
