Deep learning techniques have been applied to medical image segmentation and demonstrated expert-level performance. Due to the poor generalization abilities of the models in the deployment in different centres, common solutions, such as transfer learning and domain adaptation techniques, have been proposed to mitigate this issue. However, these solutions necessitate retraining the models with target domain data and annotations, which limits their deployment in clinical settings in unseen domains.

Aim: To investigate the protective effects, antioxidant potential, and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of eicosane on glutamate-induced cell damage and on N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-induced retinal ganglion cell (RGC) injury in a mouse model of glaucoma.

Methods: The protective effects of eicosane on the rat R28 retinal precursor cell line were assessed using cell counting kit-8 assays and Hoechst-propidium iodide staining. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was measured using the fluorescent probe 2'-7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate and flow cytometry.

Relationship between syncopal symptoms and head-up tilt test modes.

Cardiol Young

July 2024

Department of Pediatric Cardiovasology, Children's Medical Center, The Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of the Head-up tilt test (HUTT) in diagnosing pediatric vasovagal syncope by comparing two testing methods: basic head-up tilt (BHUT) and sublingual nitroglycerine head-up tilt (SNHUT).
  • A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from 2,513 children, revealing that those in the BHUT group showed higher baseline characteristics such as age, height, weight, and various blood pressure measurements compared to the SNHUT group.
  • Findings indicate that having previous syncopal episodes increases the likelihood of a positive BHUT result, suggesting that syncope is a significant risk factor for diagnosing this condition in children.

Anlotinib plus docetaxel vs. docetaxel alone for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer patients who failed first-line treatment: A multicenter, randomized phase II trial.

Lung Cancer

May 2024

Department of Thoracic Medical Oncology, Hunan Cancer Hospital/The Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University, Changsha, China. Electronic address:

Objectives: Given the modest efficacy of docetaxel in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), this study assesses the therapeutic potential and safety profile of anlotinib in combination with docetaxel compared to docetaxel monotherapy as a second-line therapy for patients with advanced NSCLC.

Materials And Methods: In this phase II study, patients with advanced NSCLC experiencing failure with first-line platinum-based regimens were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive either anlotinib plus docetaxel or docetaxel alone. Primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS), with overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), and safety as secondary endpoints.

Highly activated aerobic glycolysis provides the metabolic requirements for tumor cell growth and proliferation. Erianin, a natural product isolated from , has been reported to exert antitumor activity in multiple cancers. However, whether Erianin exerts inhibitory effects on aerobic glycolysis and the inherent mechanism remain poorly defined in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Background: Perineural invasion (PNI), as the fifth recognized pathway for the spread and metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC), has increasingly garnered widespread attention. The preoperative identification of whether colorectal cancer (CRC) patients exhibit PNI can assist clinical practitioners in enhancing preoperative decision-making, including determining the necessity of neoadjuvant therapy and the appropriateness of surgical resection. The primary objective of this study is to construct and validate a preoperative predictive model for assessing the risk of perineural invasion (PNI) in patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC).
