Up to half of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, for which effective treatment options are lacking, resulting in a poor prognosis. Over the past few years, the combination of immune checkpoint inhibitors and anti-angiogenic targeted therapy has proven highly efficacious in treating advanced HCC, significantly extending patients' survival and providing a potential for sequential curative surgery. After sequential curative hepatectomy or liver transplantation following conversion therapy, patients can receive long-term survival benefits.

Article Synopsis
  • Primary intracranial malignant melanoma (PIMM) is a rare and often misdiagnosed condition, prompting a study on its clinical features and treatment outcomes among 15 patients over a 14-year span.
  • Imaging techniques like CT and MRI helped diagnose PIMM, with most patients showing specific lesion characteristics, although definitive diagnosis required pathology results.
  • Treatment methods included radical resection with conventional radiotherapy or subtotal resection with stereotactic radiosurgery, with radical resection showing better overall survival; however, the prognosis for PIMM remains poor, highlighting the potential for targeted immunotherapy as a future option.

To compare the pathological results and long-term survival results of early surgery and surgery after at least one year follow-up for ground-glass component predominant lung adenocarcinoma patients. From January 1, 2013 to August 31, 2017, a total of 279 patients with ground-glass nodules (GGNs) undergoing surgical resection and pathologically proved to be pulmonary adenocarcinoma were included in this study. All patients were divided into early surgery group (ES Group) (210 cases) and surgery after follow-up group (FS Group) (69 cases).

The objective of this study was to develop a nomogram model based on the natural progression of tumor and other radiological features to discriminate between solitary nodular pulmonary mucinous adenocarcinoma and non-mucinous adenocarcinomas. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 15,655 cases of lung adenocarcinoma diagnosed at our institution between January 2010 and June 2023. Primary nodular invasive mucinous adenocarcinomas and non-mucinous adenocarcinomas with at least two preoperative CT scans were included.

Background: Poland syndrome is an occasional congenital malformation characterized by unilateral chest wall dysplasia and ipsilateral upper limb abnormalities. An association between Poland syndrome and breast cancer has been reported, but no clear etiological link between Poland syndrome and breast tumors has been established. We report a case of Poland syndrome combined with breast cancer and analyzed the clinical features of breast cancer in this case and its influence on the choice of treatment for breast cancer.

Background: Dysregulated alterations in organelle structure and function have a significant connection with cell death, as well as the occurrence and development of inflammatory diseases. Maintaining cell viability and inhibiting the release of inflammatory cytokines are essential measures to treat inflammatory diseases. Recently, many studies have showed that autophagy selectively targets dysfunctional organelles, thereby sustaining the functional stability of organelles, alleviating the release of multiple cytokines, and maintaining organismal homeostasis.

Objective: To investigate the effect of stress-induced protein Sestrin2 (SESN2) on necroptosis of mouse dendritic cell (DC) induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) combined with zVAD, a panaspartate-specific cysteine protease (caspase) inhibitor.

Methods: The DC2.4 cell line derived from the bone marrow of mouse in the 3rd to 10th generations was cultured.

Primary cardiac involvement (SSc-PHI) in systemic sclerosis is an important prognostic factor. We aimed to characterize and identify subclinical SSc-PHI using cardiovascular MRI to determine whether disease severity and serum biomarkers are associated with subclinical SSc-PHI. A total of 26 patients with SSc who had no history of cardiovascular disease or pulmonary hypertension underwent 3 T-enhanced cardiovascular MRI.

An update on diagnosis and treatment of hepatoblastoma.

Biosci Trends

January 2024

Faculty of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Beijing, China.

Hepatoblastoma (HB) remains the most common paediatric liver tumour and survival in children with hepatoblastoma has improved considerably since the advent of sequential surgical regimens of chemotherapy based on platinum-based chemotherapeutic agents in the 1980s. With the advent of modern diagnostic imaging and pathology techniques, new preoperative chemotherapy regimens and the maturation of surgical techniques, new diagnostic and treatment options for patients with hepatoblastoma have emerged and international collaborations are investigating the latest diagnostic approaches, chemotherapy drug combinations and surgical strategies. Diagnosis of hepatoblastoma relies on imaging studies (such as ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels, and histological confirmation through biopsy.

The treatment of complex acetabular fractures remains a complicated clinical challenge. Our self-designed novel anatomical locking guide plate (NALGP) has previously shown promising potential in T-shaped acetabular fractures (TAF), but a direct comparison with conventional fixations is yet to be made. The TAF model was established based on a volunteer's computer tomography data and then fixed with double column locking plates (DLP), a posterior column locking plate with anterior column screws (LPACS), and our NALGP.

Background: To evaluate the effects of correction in lumbar lordosis (LL) that have on full-body realignments in patients with degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS) who had undergone long sacroiliac fusion surgery.

Methods: A multi-center retrospective study including 88 DLS patients underwent the surgical procedure of long sacroiliac fusion with instrumentations was performed. Comparisons of radiographic and quality-of-life (QoL) data among that at the pre-operation, the 3rd month and the final follow-up were performed.

Objectives: Recently the effects of coronal malalignment (CM) in degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS) have been reported, however, there was few studies on the correlated parameters of coronal alignments at pre-operation. The aims of this current study were to investigate the associations of coronal parameters with scoliosis and coronal alignment, and to explore the relationships between the coronal pelvic tilt and coronal alignment in DLS.

Methods: One hundred and sixty-one DLS patients in our hospital from May 2016 to December 2020 were reviewed and documented.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and explore the difference between an atlas-based and deep learning (DL)-based auto-segmentation scheme for organs at risk (OARs) of nasopharyngeal carcinoma cases to provide valuable help for clinical practice.

Methods: 120 nasopharyngeal carcinoma cases were established in the MIM Maestro (atlas) database and trained by a DL-based model (AccuContour), and another 20 nasopharyngeal carcinoma cases were randomly selected outside the atlas database. The experienced physicians contoured 14 OARs from 20 patients based on the published consensus guidelines, and these were defined as the reference volumes (V).

Objective: Hereditary colorectal cancer (CRC) accounts for approximately 5%-10% of all CRC cases. The full profile of CRC-related germline mutations and the corresponding somatic mutational profile have not been fully determined in the Chinese population.

Methods: We performed the first population study investigating the germline mutation status in more than 1,000 ( = 1,923) Chinese patients with CRC and examined their relationship with the somatic mutational landscape.

Objective: To assess the effect that correction of lower lumbar lordosis (3L) has on global spine realignment due to the key role of 3L for scoliosis surgery in patients with degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS).

Methods: This study is a retrospective review performed between June 2018 and January 2020, including consecutive patients with DLS. Only patients age ≥ 45 years who had already undergone a selective root block operation and had the procedure of long-fusion extending to pelvis and posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) at lower lumbar spine (L -S ) were retained for analysis.
