Objective: To analyze the sociodemographic and clinical factors related to anxiety in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).
Methods: This study involved a secondary analysis of data obtained from the Diagnostic Assessment Service for People with Bipolar Disorders in China (DASP), which was initiated by the Chinese Society of Psychiatry (CSP) and conducted from September 1, 2010 to February 28, 2011. Based on the presence or absence of anxiety-related characteristics, 1,178 MDD patients were classified as suffering from anxious depression (n=915) or non-anxious depression (n=263), respectively.

Hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is one of the reasons for the mortality of patients with perioperative liver disease. Intrapulmonary vascular dilatation is the most important mechanism underlying HPS, and it primarily occurs due to cell proliferation. Inhibiting the proliferation of pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs) may provide a novel strategy to prevent HPS.

Bone tissue engineering has become a promising method for the repair of bone defects, and the production of a scaffold with high cell affinity and osseointegrative properties is crucial for successful bone substitute. Chitosan (CS)/hydroxyapatite (HA) composite was prepared by in situ compositing combined with lyophilization, and further modified by arginine‑glycine‑aspartic acid (RGD) via physical adsorption. In order to evaluate the cell adhesion rate, viability, morphology, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, the RGD‑CS/HA scaffold was seeded with bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs).

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of gelsolin (GSN) on the proliferation and invasion of the 786-0 clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) cell line in vitro. A GSN overexpression lentiviral vector was constructed and transfected into 786‑0 ccRCC cells in vitro. A 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol‑2‑yl)‑2,5‑diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was conducted to detect the effect of GSN on the proliferation and adhesion ability of the 786‑0 ccRCC cells, and a Transwell invasion assay was used to determine the effect of GSN on the invasion of 786‑0 ccRCC cells.

A rare TREM2 missense mutation (rs75932628-T) was reported to confer a significant Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. A recent study indicated no evidence of the involvement of this variant in Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, we used the genetic and expression data to reinvestigate the potential association between TREM2 and PD susceptibility.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of gemstone spectral imaging (GSI) for metal artefact reduction in cerebral artery CT angiography (CTA) after metal coils or clips treatment.
Methods: 35 patients with cerebral aneurysms were treated with metal coils or clips and underwent CTA using gemstone spectral CT between February and December 2013. The data were reconstructed into three image groups including Group A (quality check images with 140 kVp), Group B (monochromatic image sets in the range of 40-140 keV) and Group C [monochromatic image sets with metal artefacts reduction software (MARS GE Medical Systems, Waukesha, WI)].

The typical pathological feature of aplastic anemia (AA) is the rise in the number of fat cells and the reduction of osteoblasts in bone marrow. However, both fat cells and osteobalsts in bone marrow are derived from the mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Generally, the adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation is a dynamic and balanceable process.

We previously identified the cell adhesion molecule (CAM) pathway as a consistent signal in 2 Alzheimer's disease (AD) genome-wide association studies (GWAS). However, the genetic mechanisms of the CAM pathway in AD are unclear. Here, we conducted pathway analysis using (1) Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes and Gene Ontology pathways; (2) 4 brain expression GWAS datasets; and (3) 2 whole-genome AD case-control expression datasets.

Large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have revealed that rs10757278 polymorphism (or its proxy rs1333049) on chromosome 9p21 is associated with myocardial infarction (MI) susceptibility in individuals of Caucasian ancestry. Following studies in other populations investigated this association. However, some of these studies reported weak or no significant association.

This study was performed to observe the effect of the combination of nimotuzumab with radiation or gemcitabine-based chemoradiation on antipancreatic cancer cell therapy. Pancreatic cancer cells (PANC-1) were treated with nimotuzumab alone or combined with radiation (2, 4, or 8 Gy), which was either with or without gemcitabine chemotherapy. Cell proliferation, cell cycle distribution, and apoptosis were observed.

The objective of this study was to observe the acute cytotoxic effects of hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether sonodynamic therapy (HMME-SDT) on hypertrophic scar fibroblasts of rabbit ears. We first assessed the effects of different irradiation times and HMME concentrations on the survival of hypertrophic scar fibroblasts using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay to determine the optimum irradiation time and HMME concentration. The hypertrophic scar fibroblast cell suspensions of the rabbit ears were divided into four groups, the survival rates were detected using the MTT assay, and the type of cell death was detected by Annexin V/propidium iodide (PI) double staining flow cytometry.

The tumorigenesis and maintenance of a cancer cells is dependent upon the collaboration of multiple signaling pathways. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and β-catenin are at the center of multiple cancer-associated signaling pathways; therefore, simultaneously targeting STAT3 and β-catenin may be a potential cancer treatment, leading to induced lethality of cancer cells. In the present study, HepG2 liver cancer cells were transfected with small interfering RNA (siRNA) against β-catenin and STAT3 alone or in combination.

The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) in apolipoprotein E (apoE) knockout mice (apoE(-/-)) and to validate the role of these miRNAs in human coronary artery disease (CAD). Pooled plasma from 10 apoE(-/-) mice and 10 healthy C57BL/6 (B6) mice was used to perform the microarray analysis. The results showed that miR-34a, miR-21, miR-23a, miR-30a and miR-106b were differentially expressed in apoE(-/-) mice, and these expression changes were confirmed by real-time quantitative reverse-transcription PCR.

Large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) identified three single nucleotide polymorphisms rs11136000, rs2279590, and rs9331888 in CLU gene to be significantly associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Caucasian ancestry. Both rs11136000 and rs2279590 variants were successfully replicated in Asian population. However, previous studies reported either a weak association or no association between rs9331888 polymorphism and AD in Asian population.

A continuous mixed immobilized sludge reactor (CMISR) using activated carbon as support carrier for dark fermentative hydrogen production from enzymatic hydrolyzed food waste was developed. The effects of immobilized sludge packing ratio (10-20%, v/v) and substrate loading rate (OLR) (8-40kg/m(3)/d) on biohydrogen production were examined, respectively. The hydrogen production rates (HPRs) with packing ratio of 15% were significantly higher than the results obtained from packing ratio of 10% and 20%.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignancy that meets the definition of a complex disease. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) has identified several loci of weak predictive value in CRC, however, these do not fully explain the occurrence risk. Recently, gene set analysis has allowed enhanced interpretation of GWAS data in CRC, identifying a number of metabolic pathways as important for disease pathogenesis.
