Article Synopsis
  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common heart rhythm disorder that can lead to serious complications like stroke, which is particularly influenced by thromboembolic risk assessed through the CHADS-VAS score.
  • Many strokes occur even in patients with low CHADS-VAS scores, highlighting the need for better thromboembolic risk evaluation in AF patients.
  • The left atrial appendage (LAA) is a crucial site for blood clot formation in AF, making it vital to assess its structure and function using echocardiography before, during, and after treatments like AF ablation.

Objective: In the past, the localization of seizure onset zone (SOZ) primarily relied on traditional EEG signal analysis methods. However, due to their limited spatial and temporal resolution, accurately pinpointing neural activity was challenging, thereby restricting their clinical applicability. Compared with traditional EEG signals, SEEG signals have superior spatial and temporal resolution, and can more accurately record neural activity near epileptic foci, making them better suited for studying SOZ.

Background: Treatment of femoral neck fractures in patients who are nongeriatric (≤ 60 years) is challenging because of high failure rates. Anatomic parameters influence the biomechanical environment for fracture healing, but their associations with clinical prognosis remains unclear.

Questions/purposes: (1) Which anatomic parameter that is identifiable on pelvic radiographs shows a statistical correlation with a higher risk of clinical failure defined as nonunion, avascular necrosis (AVN), reoperation, and functional failure (decrease in Harris hip score reaching the minimum clinically important difference) in the screw fixation of femoral neck fractures among nongeriatric patients? (2) How does the influence of anatomic parameters on clinical prognosis manifest: directly or mediated by additional mechanisms?

Methods: This retrospective, multicenter study used a nationwide database in China.

Soft actuators capable of remote-controlled guidance and manipulation within complex constrained spaces hold great promise in various fields, especially in medical fields such as minimally invasive surgery. However, most current magnetic drive soft actuators only have the functions of position control and guidance, and it is still challenging to achieve more flexible operations on different targets within constrained spaces. Herein, we propose a multifunctional flexible magnetic drive gripper that can be steered within complex constrained spaces and operate on targets of various shapes.
