J Cardiothorac Surg

December 2024

Department of Thoracic Surgery, The First Hospital of China Medical University, No. 155, Nanjing North Street, Shenyang, 110002, Liaoning, P.R. China.

Background: With advancements in imaging testing and surgical procedures, an increasing number of nodules with smaller diameters and deeper locations have been deemed suitable for surgical intervention. The preoperative localization of these nodules has become essential. In this retrospective single-center study, we aimed to compare the effectiveness and patient comfort associated with the use of a four-hook needle versus a hook-wire needle for preoperative localization.

HMGA1 influence on iron-induced cell death in Tfh cells of SLE patients.

Cell Biol Toxicol

December 2024

Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, The First Hospital of China Medical University, No. 155 Nanjing North Street, Heping District, Shenyang, 110001, Liaoning Province, China.

The autoimmune disorder known as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) exhibits intricate features with abnormal immune responses leading to tissue injury. The generation of antibodies and the disruption of immune regulation heavily depend on the pivotal function of T follicular helper (Tfh) cells. Iron dysregulation is significant in autoimmune diseases, impacting immune cell function and disease progression.

The use of anesthetics during surgery can cause severe neurological damage and cognitive dysfunction in elderly patients. However, this health issue currently lacks corresponding therapeutic strategies. This research involved the utilization of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and transcriptomic assessment to pinpoint crucial cell classifications and molecular pathways, as well as the lncRNA expression profiles, that undergo substantial alterations in aged rats experiencing sevoflurane-induced cognitive impairment.

Unveiling the link: anti-protein disulfide isomerase A3 autoantibody expression and polycystic ovary syndrome risk in euthyroid autoimmune thyroiditis women.

J Ovarian Res

December 2024

Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, The Institute of Endocrinology, NHC Key Laboratory of Diagnosis and Treatment of Thyroid Disease, The First Hospital of China Medical University, Shenyang, Liaoning, China.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common complication of autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) in women, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Protein disulfide isomerase A3 (PDIA3) is a ubiquitous protein. We have reported that PDIA3 autoantibody (PDIA3Ab) production results from autoimmune responses against thyrocytes, resulting in its high expression in euthyroid AIT patients.

Background: The eyeball axial length (AL) is an important biological indicator of myopia, which has been widely studied. However, little research has been conducted on the relationship between eye shape and fundus structural changes in myopia. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the shape of the posterior pole of the eye, and choroidal characteristics by comparing with the relationship between AL and choroidal characteristics.

Mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles for human diseases.

Extracell Vesicles Circ Nucl Acids

February 2024

Cancer Hospital of China Medical University, Liaoning Cancer Hospital and Institute, Cancer Hospital of Dalian University of Technology, Faculty of Medicine, Dalian University of Technology, Shenyang 110042, Liaoning, China.

Stem cell therapy is a novel approach for treating various severe and intractable diseases, including autoimmune disorders, organ transplants, tumors, and neurodegenerative diseases. Nevertheless, the extensive utilization of stem cells is constrained by potential tumorigenicity, challenges in precise differentiation, rejection concerns, and ethical considerations. Extracellular vesicles possess the ability to carry diverse bioactive factors from stem cells and deliver them to specific target cells or tissues.

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the preferences and influencing factors of self-management behaviors in patients with recurrent gout and provide a theoretical basis for developing targeted strategies to improve self-management preferences.

Methods: A total of 10 patients with recurrent gout were recruited from the gout specialist outpatient clinic at a tertiary hospital in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with these patients, and the Kawakita Jiro (KJ) method was used to analyze the interview data.

Background: Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) of cardiac and neural crest origin contribute to the developing proximal aorta and are linked to disease propensity in adults.

Methods: We analyzed single-cell transcriptomes of aortic SMCs from adult mice to determine basal states and changes after disrupting TGFβ (transforming growth factor-β) signaling necessary for aortic homeostasis.

Results: A minority of Myh11 lineage-marked SMCs differentially expressed genes suggestive of embryological origin.

Objective: The effects of pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs)-induced catecholamine overproduction on vascular and cardiac function are generally thought to be reversible after PPGLs removal. However, a sizable proportion of patients who were free of the recurrent disease still faced high risks of cardiovascular problems after successful surgery. We aim to identify incidence and risk factors for long-term cardiovascular complications in PPGLs patients after surgery.

Current standard-of-care therapies have failed to improve the survival of patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer (PCA). Therefore, exploring novel therapeutic approaches for cancer targeting is of utmost need. During the past few years, many efforts have been made to develop conventional treatment strategies to reduce chemotherapy resistance.

Bexarotene ameliorated the pulmonary inflammation and M1 polarization of alveolar macrophages induced by cigarette smoke via PPARγ/HO-1.

Respir Res

December 2024

Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University, No.36 Sanhao Street, Shenyang, 110004, Liaoning, China.

Background: Alveolar macrophages (AMs) modulate pulmonary inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), contributing to its progression. The PPARγ/RXRα heterodimer influences AM polarization induced by cigarette smoke (CS). Although PPARγ agonists suppress CS-induced M1 macrophage polarization, the impact of RXRα agonists on this process has not been determined.

To compare the efficacy and safety of gecacitinib (also known as jaktinib) with hydroxyurea (HU) in treating myelofibrosis (MF) patients. In this multicenter, randomized phase 3 trial (ZGJAK016), intermediate- or high-risk primarily JAK inhibitor naïve MF patients were assigned in a 2:1 ratio to receive either gecacitinib (100 mg twice a day, BID) or HU (500 mg BID). The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with ≥35% reduction in spleen volume (SVR35) from baseline at week 24.

The solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare intrathoracic neoplasm that commonly originates from the subpleural mesenchymal cells of the visceral pleura and accounts for less than 5% of all pleural tumors. We reported a case of a 54-year-old man with a two-week history of hypoglycemia, a six-month history of productive cough and fatigue, and chronic right chest pain. Radiological techniques revealed a giant intra-thoracic mass with hypervascularization, and pathological staining was carried out to make a definitive diagnosis of SFTP.

Although cisplatin is a widely used chemotherapeutic agent, it is severely toxic and causes irreversible hearing loss, restricting its application in clinical settings. This study aimed to determine the molecular mechanism underlying cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. Here, we established in vitro and in vivo ototoxicity models of cisplatin-induced hair cell loss, and our results showed that reducing STING levels decreased inflammatory factor expression and hair cell death.
