Importance: Previous studies have demonstrated the advantages of short-term histopathological outcomes and complications associated with transanal total mesorectal excision (TME) compared with laparoscopic TME. However, the long-term oncological outcomes of transanal TME remain ambiguous. This study aims to compare 3-year disease-free survival of transanal TME with laparoscopic TME.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) stands as the third most prevalent malignancy globally and is recognized as the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Notably, nearly 50% of individuals diagnosed with CRC ultimately develop metastatic disease, with the peritoneum emerging as the second most frequent site for metastatic spread. Recent advancements in therapeutic frameworks have enhanced both survival rates and quality of life metrics for patients afflicted with colorectal cancer peritoneal metastases (CRCPM).

Nurses' Sleep Quality and Its Influencing Factors During the First Explosive COVID-19 Outbreak in Zhejiang, China, After the Relaxation of Epidemic Prevention and Control Measures: A Multicentre Cross-Sectional Study.

Aim: To investigate the sleep quality and its influencing factors among nurses in hospitals in Zhejiang, China, during the first explosive COVID-19 outbreak following the relaxation of prevention and control measures.

Design: A multicentre cross-sectional study.

Methods: Between 10 January and 20 January 2023-approximately 1 month after the policy was loosened-a total of 573 nurses from tertiary and community hospitals in Zhejiang participated in an online, self-administered survey.

Anti-Scattering Perovskite Scintillator Arrays for High-Resolution Computed Tomography Imaging.

Computed tomography (CT) imaging has emerge as an effective medical diagnostic technique due to its rapid and 3D imaging capabilities, often employing indirect imaging methods through scintillator materials. Arraying scintillators that can confine light scattering to enable high-resolution CT imaging remains an area of ongoing exploration for emerging perovskite scintillators. Here an anti-scattering cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr) scintillator array embedded within a polyurethane acrylate matrix for CT imaging using a cost-effective solution-processed method is reported.

Prognostic value of immunosuppression scores in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: a multicenter study.

Introduction: The prognostic impact of human leukocyte antigen-E (HLA-E) expression and the proportion of natural killer (NK) cells in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) was investigated.

Methods: This study retrospectively evaluated 397 ESCC patients across two centers. The cumulative incidence of recurrence (CIR) and the incidence of tumor-related death (CID) were analyzed in various groups.

Metabolic changes of thalamus assessed by H-MRS spectroscopy in patients of cervical spondylotic myelopathy following decompression surgery.

Objective: To assess the changes of thalamic metabolites before and after surgery in patients with Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy (CSM) using Hydrogen Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (H-MRS) and to investigate its association with improvement in neurological function.

Methods: Forty-eight CSM patients who underwent cervical decompression surgery from December 2022 to June 2023 were included, and 33 healthy volunteers were recruited. All subjects underwent bilateral thalamic H-MRS scans before the surgical procedure, and subsequently again 6 months later.

Analysis of the risk of oncological adverse events associated with infliximab in combination with azathioprine compared to monotherapy: insights from the FAERS database.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the risk of tumor formation with infliximab or azathioprine monotherapy versus their combination, using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database.

Methods: Data were extracted from the FAERS database for patients treated with infliximab, azathioprine, and combination therapy from Q1 2004 to Q2 2024. Signal mining employed methods such as Reported Odds Ratio (ROR), Proportional Reporting Ratio (PRR), Multiple Gamma-Poisson Scaling Assessment (MGPSA) and Bayesian Confidence Interval Progressive Neural Network (BCPNN).

Background: Currently, some novel rods with lower elastic modulus have the potential as alternatives to traditional titanium alloy rods in lumbar fusion. Background: Acute ankle sprains are among the most common injuries in children and are often associated with chondral avulsion fractures and ligament injuries. However, radiography may not be sufficiently accurate for assessing cartilage and ligament injuries in children. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the necessity of radiography in the diagnosis of acute ankle sprains in children.

Background: Depressive symptoms in adolescents can significantly affect their daily lives and pose risks to their future development. These symptoms may be linked to various factors experienced during both childhood and adolescence. Machine learning (ML) has attracted substantial attention in the field of adolescent depression; however, studies establishing prediction models have primarily considered childhood or adolescent features separately, resulting in a lack of analyses that incorporate factors from both stages.

Multiple time points for detecting circulating tumor DNA to monitor the response to neoadjuvant therapy in breast cancer: a meta-analysis.

Background: Not all breast cancer (BC) patients can benefit from neoadjuvant therapy (NAT). A poor response may result in patients missing the best opportunity for treatment, ultimately leading to a poor prognosis. Thus, to identify an effective predictor that can assess and predict patient response at early time points, we focused on circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), which is a vital noninvasive liquid biopsy biomarker.

First-line cadonilimab plus chemotherapy in HER2-negative advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma: a randomized, double-blind, phase 3 trial.

Programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) inhibitors plus chemotherapy have been the standard of care in the first-line treatment of advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction (G/GEJ) adenocarcinoma; however, the survival benefits are modest in patients with low programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression. Here we investigated the efficacy and safety of cadonilimab (PD-1/cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) bispecific antibody) plus chemotherapy as first-line treatment in G/GEJ adenocarcinoma. The prespecified interim analysis is reported here.

Prevalence of malnutrition among adult inpatients in China: a nationwide cross-sectional study.

Malnutrition substantially contributes to adverse clinical outcomes. However, no national survey has been conducted to characterize its epidemiology in hospital settings in China. We conducted the China Nutrition Fundamental Data 2020 project among a multistage stratified cluster sample of adult inpatients from 291 study sites across 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (except for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan Province, and the Xizang Autonomous Region, please see MATERIALS AND METHODS for details of the causes) of China to generate reliable data on the prevalence of malnutrition and explore the associated risk factors.

Maternal Smoking Around Birth Is a Risk Factor for Gastrointestinal Diseases in Offspring: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

Background: The effect of maternal smoking around birth (MSAB) on gastrointestinal (GI) diseases in the offspring is still not fully understood.

Aim: We conducted a rigorous Mendelian randomization (MR) study to examine the association between MSAB and 24 GI diseases in offspring.

Methods: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with MSAB were obtained from a recent study.

Artesunate-multiple pharmacological effects beyond treating malaria.

Artesunate, a semisynthetic derivative of artemisinin, is not only recommended as the first-line drug for treating severe malaria but is also a significant member of Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACTs), used in combination with other artemisinin derivatives for treating uncomplicated malaria. Beyond its potent anti-malarial activity, artesunate has garnered considerable attention for its pharmacological effects, which encompass broad-spectrum anti-tumor, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties. It has collectively demonstrated superior drug tolerance, low toxicity, and mild side effects in cell line experiments in vitro, experimental animal models, and clinical drug researches, as a monotherapy or in combination with other agents.

Quantification and clinical performance of serum parathyroid hormone 1-84 via immunocapture coupled to LC-MS/MS in chronic renal failure.

Accurate measurement of serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) is crucial for diagnosing and managing endocrine and osteological diseases. Conventional immunoassay methods struggle with cross reactivity issues between full-length PTH and truncated fragments or post-translationally modified forms. Both the standardization of PTH assays and the peptide's stability are concerning.

Background: Polydatin (PD), also known as tiger cane glycoside, is a natural compound extracted from the Japanese knotweed plant, which is often referred to as white resveratrol. It exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic effects in the treatment of various diseases. However, the potential molecular mechanisms of PD in osteoarthritis have not been clearly elucidated.

Functional connectivity analyses of individual hippocampal subregions in major depressive disorder with electroconvulsive therapy.

Background: The hippocampus has been widely reported to be involved in the neuropathology of major depressive disorder (MDD). All the previous researches adopted group-level hippocampus subregions atlas to investigate abnormal functional connectivities in MDD in absence of capturing individual variability. In addition, the molecular basis of functional impairments of hippocampal subregions in MDD remains elusive.
