Article Synopsis
  • ZFAS1 is identified as an oncogenic long noncoding RNA that is upregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and is associated with poor patient outcomes.
  • Inhibition of ZFAS1 leads to reduced HCC cell growth and promotes ferroptosis, while its overexpression has the opposite effect.
  • The study reveals a mechanism where ZFAS1 interacts with miR-150 to regulate AIFM2, a key protector against ferroptosis, highlighting a potential therapeutic target for HCC treatment.

As an acne sequela, post-acne scarring (PSA) has huge negative impact on sufferers' quality of life because of aesthetical embarrassment. Transdermal delivery of botulinum toxin-A (BTXA) is a promising strategy for PAS treatment, but currently reported approaches are far from satisfactory. In this work, phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol (PC/Chol) nanoliposomes were utilized for encapsulation and transdermal delivery of BTXA.

Treatment of primary epididymal adenocarcinoma: a case report and review of the literature.

J Med Case Rep

June 2024

Department of Urology, The First Clinical Medical College of China Three Gorges University, Yichang Central People's Hospital, Yichang, China.

Background: Epididymal tumors, especially malignant tumors, have low incidence and are rare in our clinical work. However, they may progress quickly and have poor prognosis. For such rare clinical cases with extremely low incidence rates, and as they are prone to misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis and have a very poor prognosis, clinical workers need to pay special attention and consider the possibility of primary epididymal malignant tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • Early neurological deterioration (END) is a serious complication for acute ischemic stroke patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis, highlighting the need for effective prediction tools.
  • The study developed the CNS-LAND score, a 9-point scale based on various clinical and lab variables, which demonstrated strong accuracy in predicting END risk through a cohort of over 1,200 patients.
  • Results showed significant differentiation in END risk based on CNS-LAND scores, indicating that it can effectively guide clinical decisions for AIS patients undergoing treatment.

Aim: To develop and validate a novel weighted score integrating multisystem laboratory and clinical variables to predict poor 3-month outcome (mRS score of 3-6) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) therapy.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from Trial of Revascularization Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke study. The Supra-Blan t score was derived using the data on age, the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score, history of atrial fibrillation, blood sugar level, neutrophil count, direct bilirubin level, platelet-lymphocyte ratio, and TnI level in the derivation cohort of 433 patients, and validated in a cohort of 525 patients.

Tear trough ligament reset as a new method for tear trough deformity and dark circles correction.

Br J Oral Maxillofac Surg

January 2023

College of Biological & Pharmaceutical Sciences, China Three Gorges University, Yichang 443002, China. Electronic address:

Tear trough deformities and dark circles are important parts of periorbital aging. In this study, the tear trough ligament was reset to correct the tear trough deformity, and its effect on dark circles was analysed. The medical records of 60 patients who underwent eye bag plastic surgery between January 2021 and February 2022 were analysed (30 had traditional eye bag plastic surgery and 30 had the tear trough ligament reset).

Department of Medical Cosmetology, The First Clinical Medical College of China Three Gorges University, Yichang Central People's Hospital, Institute of Medical Cosmetology, China Three Gorges University, Yichang 443003, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated a new method for periorbital rejuvenation using muscle manipulation during eyebrow lifting surgery.
  • A total of 82 patients were analyzed, and results showed that those undergoing the new combined approach had better eyebrow positioning and higher satisfaction compared to the traditional method.
  • Specifically, the combined group had a more aesthetically pleasing eyebrow-eye position ratio and a significantly higher rate of patient satisfaction post-surgery.

The potential of nucleic acid therapeutics to treat diseases by targeting specific cells has resulted in its increasing number of uses in clinical settings. However, the major challenge is to deliver bio-macromolecules into target cells and/or subcellular locations of interest ahead in the development of delivery systems. Although, supercharged residues replaced protein 36 + GFP can facilitate itself and cargoes delivery, its efficiency is still limited.

The safety issues like immunogenicity and unacceptable cancer risk of viral vectors for DNA/mRNA vaccine delivery necessitate the development of non-viral vectors with no toxicity. Among the non-viral strategies, cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have been a topic of interest recently because of their ability to cross plasma membranes and facilitate nucleic acids delivery both in vivo and in vitro. In addition to the application in the field of gene vaccine and gene therapy, CPPs based nucleic acids delivery have been proved by its potential application like gene editing, RNA-sequencing, and imaging.

Bioactive therapeutic molecules are generally impermeable to the cell membrane, hindering their utility and efficacy. A group of peptides called cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) were found to have the capability of transporting different types of cargo molecules across the cell membrane. Here, we identified a short peptide named P2, which has a higher proportion of basic residues than the CDN1 (cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1) protein it is derived from, and we used bioinformatic analysis and experimental validation to confirm the penetration property of peptide P2.

Viral vectors for vaccine delivery are challenged by recently reported safety issues like immunogenicity and risk for cancer development, and thus there is a growing need for the development of non-viral vectors. Cell penetrating peptides (CPPs) are non-viral vectors that can enter plasma membranes efficiently and deliver a broad range of cargoes. Our bioinformatic prediction and wet-lab validation data suggested that peptide P1 derived from MARCKS protein phosphorylation site domain is a new potential CPP candidate.

The sialyl Lewis X (SLe) antigen encoded by the FUT7 gene is the ligand of endotheliam-selectin (E-selectin). The combination of SLe antigen and E-selectin represents an important way for malignant tumor metastasis. In the present study, the effect of the SLe-binding DNA aptamer on the adhesion and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells in vitro was investigated.
