Article Synopsis
  • Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are common in children and adolescents, significantly affecting their mental health and psychological wellbeing, contrasting with the focus of previous research mainly on adults.
  • An extensive survey conducted in China among 6,077 children aged 6-15 revealed notable prevalences of LUTS symptoms like urgency (19.46%) and daytime incontinence (9.75%), with higher rates linked to factors like age and toilet training practices.
  • The study found that children with LUTS exhibited a 44.6% incidence of abnormal psychological behavior, markedly higher than those without LUTS, indicating a strong relationship between LUTS and mental health issues.

September 2024

Center for Evidence-Based Medicine, Taihe Hospital, Hubei University of Medicine, No. 32, Renmin South Road, Shiyan, 442000, Hubei, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looks at how AIDS cases, deaths, and overall health impact changed around the world from 1990 to 2019, including differences between regions that are rich and poor.
  • Researchers gathered data from 204 countries to find trends over the years and make predictions for the next 25 years.
  • Overall, while the number of HIV cases increased slightly, the rate of new cases was actually going down, especially in poorer regions, and they expect this positive trend to continue in the future.

Background: This study aims to analyse changes in urinary kidney injury markers in children with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP), investigate the risk factors for MPP-related acute kidney injury (AKI) and establish a model to predict MPP-related AKI.

Methods: Ninety-five children were enrolled based on the study's inclusion and exclusion criteria. They were divided into a severe MPP (SMPP) group and a non-SMPP group and then into an AKI group and a non-AKI group according to the presence of AKI.

Background: To explore the efficacy of a prediction model based on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) features extracted from deep learning (DL) and radiomics combined with clinical parameters and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values to identify microsatellite instability (MSI) in endometrial cancer (EC).

Methods: This study included a cohort of 116 patients with EC, who were subsequently divided into training (n = 81) and test (n = 35) sets. From DWI, conventional radiomics features and convolutional neural network-based DL features were extracted.

Study Objectives: Observational studies suggest associations between insomnia and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), but the causal mechanism remains unclear. We investigated the potential causal associations between insomnia and CVDs by a combined systematic meta-review and meta-analysis of observational and Mendelian randomization studies.

Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase for English-language articles from inception to July 11, 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • - Histone methylation affects gene transcription based on the specific amino acids modified and the number of methyl groups, with certain modifications promoting or inhibiting transcription.
  • - This process plays a significant role in tumor immunotherapy by influencing immune cell behavior in the tumor microenvironment, which is crucial for immune escape and therapy effectiveness.
  • - Lysine methyltransferase 2C (KMT2C) is key to histone modification, linked to various diseases and shows potential as a target for treatments in tumor immunotherapy, despite challenges in its application.

Objective: NvZhen ErXian HeJi (NZEXHJ) is used to treat perimenopausal syndrome (PS), but its effect on perimenopausal coronary heart disease is unclear. Furthermore, the aim of this research is to study the effect of NZEXHJ on perimenopausal coronary heart disease (PMCHD) in a rat model based on a network pharmacology approach.

Materials And Methods: Based on network pharmacological analysis combined with molecular docking, we predicted the potential therapeutic target and pharmacological mechanism of NZEXHJ in the treatment of PMCHD.

To nap or not? Evidence from a meta-analysis of cohort studies of habitual daytime napping and health outcomes.

Sleep Med Rev

December 2024

National Institute on Drug Dependence and Beijing Key Laboratory of Drug Dependence, Peking University, Beijing, China; School of Public Health, Peking University, Beijing, China. Electronic address:

Habitual daytime napping is a common behavioral and lifestyle practice in particular countries and is often considered part of a normal daily routine. However, recent evidence suggests that the health effects of habitual daytime napping are controversial. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to March 9, 2024, to synthesize cohort studies of napping and health outcome risk.

Disulfide stress and its role in cardiovascular diseases.

Redox Biol

September 2024

Henan Key Laboratory of Medical Tissue Regeneration, Xinxiang Medical University, Xinxiang, China; Department of Human Anatomy and Histoembryology, Xinxiang Medical University, Xinxiang, China. Electronic address:

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of mortality in humans, and oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in disease progression. This phenomenon typically arises from weakening of the cellular antioxidant system or excessive accumulation of peroxides. This review focuses on a specialized form of oxidative stress-disulfide stress-which is triggered by an imbalance in the glutaredoxin and thioredoxin antioxidant systems within the cell, leading to the accumulation of disulfide bonds.

Transcriptional heterogeneity of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) has been investigated in individual cancers, but the extent to which these states transcend tumor types and represent a general feature of cancer remains unclear. We performed pan-cancer single-cell RNA sequencing analysis across nine cancer types and identified distinct monocyte/TAM composition patterns. Using spatial analysis from clinical study tissues, we assessed TAM functions in shaping the tumor microenvironment (TME) and influencing immunotherapy.

The horizontal part of the third segment (V3) of the vertebral artery (VA) is a critical anastomotic site for bypass procedures involving either donor or recipient vessels. It is rare for the V3 segment to deviate from its typical course of passing through the atlanto-transverse foramen. V3 anomaly encountered in occipital artery (OA)-V3 bypass surgery has not been previously reported.

Background: Oxidative stress is a well-known pathological factor driving neuronal loss and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Melatonin, coenzyme Q10 and lecithin are three common nutrients with an antioxidative capacity. Here, we examined the effectiveness of them administrated individually and in combination in protecting against oxidative stress-induced neuronal death in vitro, and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and associated deficits in vivo.

Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) can seriously affect graft survival and prognosis and is an unavoidable event during liver transplantation. Ferroptosis is a novel iron-dependent form of cell death characterized by iron accumulation and overwhelming lipid peroxidation; it differs morphologically, genetically, and biochemically from other well-known cell death types (autophagy, necrosis, and apoptosis). Accumulating evidence has shown that ferroptosis is involved in the pathogenesis of hepatic IRI, and targeting ferroptosis may be a promising therapeutic approach.

Dysregulation of cholesterol homeostasis occurs in multiple types of tumors and promotes cancer progression. Investigating the specific processes that induce abnormal cholesterol metabolism could identify therapeutic targets to improve cancer treatment. In this investigation, we observed upregulation of 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7), a vital enzyme involved in the synthesis of cholesterol, within bladder cancer tissues in comparison to normal tissues, which was correlated with increased bladder cancer metastasis.
