Introduction: Cistanche deserticola Ma (CD), an edible and medicinal plant native to Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, and Gansu in China, is rich in bioactive polysaccharides known for their health-promoting properties. The polysaccharides of C. deserticola (CDPs) have been shown to possess a range of beneficial activities, including immunomodulatory, anti-aging, antioxidant, and anti-osteoporosis effects.

Expression of TNF-α, VEGF-A and Microvessel Density in Cerebral Alveolar Echinococcosis and Their Correlation with Perilesional Brain Edema.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is an infrequent zoonosis caused by Echinococcus multilocularis with a high degree of disability and mortality. Metastatic cerebral alveolar echinococcosis (CAE) is very rare and the lesions could lead to severe perilesional brain edema (PLBE) and subsequent uncontrollable intracranial hypertension. In this study, we sought to determine the expression of edema-associated factors in CAE lesions and their associations with PLBE.

Levosimendan is a novel inotrope that acts in a catecholamine-independent manner.

Immunopathological characteristics and therapeutic effects of UC-MSCs in a pigeon breeder's lung mouse model.

Prevalence of malnutrition among adult inpatients in China: a nationwide cross-sectional study.

Malnutrition substantially contributes to adverse clinical outcomes. However, no national survey has been conducted to characterize its epidemiology in hospital settings in China. We conducted the China Nutrition Fundamental Data 2020 project among a multistage stratified cluster sample of adult inpatients from 291 study sites across 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (except for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan Province, and the Xizang Autonomous Region, please see MATERIALS AND METHODS for details of the causes) of China to generate reliable data on the prevalence of malnutrition and explore the associated risk factors.

The association between serum albumin levels and metabolic syndrome based on the NHANES and two sample Mendelian randomization study.

Previous studies have shown that serum albumin levels are associated with a greater risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, it is unclear whether this association is causal or only influenced by confounding factors, so further investigation is needed to determine the causal relationships. Researchers selected participants with serum albumin, metabolic syndrome, and related covariates from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database for a total of 14,036 individuals, including 5483 individuals with MetS and 8553 individuals without MetS.

How Often Does Bacteremia Occur in Patients With Chronic Periprosthetic Joint Infection? A Prospective, Observational Study.

Background: Bacteremia is sometimes observed in patients with prosthetic joint infection (PJI), and it is associated with a lower likelihood of infection control. However, the prevalence and association of bacteremia in chronic PJI remain unknown.

Questions/purposes: (1) What percentage of patients are diagnosed with bacteremia at the time of hospital admission and before surgery for chronic PJI? (2) What clinical factors are associated with positive blood cultures? (3) To what degree are positive blood cultures associated with infection-free implant survival in patients with chronic PJI?

Methods: This prospective study was conducted at a single academic institution from June 2021 to August 2022.

Methods: Publications on BS from January 1, 1980, to March 24, 2024, were retrieved from the Web of Science database.

Background: Few studies have examined the relationship between nutritional status, as assessed by the Prognostic Nutrition Index (PNI), and incident cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality, particularly in hypertensive patients. This study aimed to examine the association between PNI and cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality in Americans with hypertension.

Methods: Data from this retrospective cohort study were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination (NHANES) 1999-2016.

Neoadjuvant immunotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer: Opportunities and challenges.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have transformed the treatment landscape for resectable non-small cell lung cancer. Numerous trials have explored the use of ICIs, either as monotherapy or in combination with other therapies, in the neoadjuvant setting for stage I-III non-small cell lung cancer. Most trials have demonstrated neoadjuvant immunotherapy to be safe and to have remarkable efficacy, with a high pathological response rate and significantly improved event-free survival.

TransferBAN-Syn: a transfer learning-based algorithm for predicting synergistic drug combinations against echinococcosis.

Echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the larvae of echinococcus tapeworms infesting the human body. Drug combination therapy is highly valued for the treatment of echinococcosis because of its potential to overcome resistance and enhance the response to existing drugs. Traditional methods of identifying drug combinations via biological experimentation is costly and time-consuming.

Burden of type 2 diabetes due to high body mass index in different SDI regions and projections of future trends: insights from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 study.

Aim: The aim of our study was to assess the impact of high body mass index (BMI) on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in different Socio-Demographic Development Index (SDI) regions using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study.

Methods: Using data from the GBD study, the burden of disease for T2DM was measured by analyzing the age-standardized disability-adjusted life year rate (ASDR) and age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) for type 2 diabetes due to high BMI and the associated estimated annual percentage change (EAPC). Decomposition analyses, frontier analyses, and predictive models were used to analyze changes and influencing factors for each metric.

Cardiac hydatid cyst: case series and review of the literature.

Background: Echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease prevalent in pastoral areas, mainly involving the liver and lungs, and rarely affecting the brain and heart. This article describes the diagnosis and treatment of 14 patients with cardiac encapsulated cysts, with the aim of providing insights into the clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges, therapeutic strategies, and outcomes associated with cardiac encapsulated cysts.

Methods: This retrospective case series included 13 patients with cardiac and/or cerebral encapsulated cysts.

Purpose: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is a common primary hepatic tumors with a 5-year survival rate of less than 20%. Therefore, it is crucial to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of ICC. Recently, the advance of high-throughput chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C) technology help us look insight into the three-dimensional (3D) genome structure variation during tumorigenesis.

Retrospective analysis of disease characteristics and treatment patterns among patients with esophageal cancer across 14 surgically represented centers.

Objective: Esophageal cancer (EC) ranks eighth among cancers in cancer-related deaths globally, and ~44% of new cases occur in China. We sought to describe the clinical characteristics and treatment landscape of EC in China before the approval of immunotherapy in 2020.

Methods: CHANNEL was a large, retrospective study using patient-level data from 14 hospitals/cancer centers across China, including adults initiating therapy for newly diagnosed EC (January to December 2018).
