Background: Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events and is closely related to adverse outcomes after stroke. However, the regional investigation into the associations of ALP with acute stroke (AS) outcomes is limited. This study aimed to identify the association between serum ALP levels and clinical outcomes 3 months after AS in the Xi'an district of China.

Background: In recent years, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) has been considered as one of the independent risk factors of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and leads to worse clinical outcomes in patients with renal failure. In this study, we aim to investigate whether serum ALP level is associated with poor early-term prognosis in relationship of AIS patients with preserved renal function.

Methods: A prospectively collected database of AIS patients hospitalized in the Xi'an district of China from January to December, 2015 was analyzed.

The Significance of the Ocular Adverse Effect Induced by Systemic Taxane Application.

Front Biosci (Landmark Ed)

May 2022

Department of Ophthalmology, Eye Institute of Chinese PLA, Xijing Hospital, Fourth Military Medical University, 710032 Xi'an, Shaanxi, China.

In recent years, in-depth research on anti-tumor therapy has brought the emergence of new active chemotherapeutic agents and combination regimens. However, as one of them, taxane drugs are widely used in clinical practice, but it should be noted that many side reactions caused by their application bring some difficulties to routine management. Among the side reactions related to taxane anti-tumor therapy, ocular adverse reactions are occasionally reported and are not life-threatening but may seriously affect patients' life quality.

Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare and slowly progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by the presence of eosinophilic neuronal intranuclear inclusions. The clinical manifestations of NIID are diverse, and the most common initial feature in cases of sporadic NIID is dementia. Herein, we report an adult female with keratitis as the initial presentation with subsequent bilateral limb tremor, gait disturbances, overemotional behavior, sweating and constipation.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by impaired social communication, abnormal repetitive behaviors and restricted interests and/or sensory behaviors. It has been widely accepted that ASD involves a complex interplay of both genetic and environmental risk factors. Existing medications are only symptomatic treatments, there are no effective treatments that can improve these core social behavior deficits.

Chronic exposure to biomass ambient particulate matter triggers alveolar macrophage polarization and activation in the rat lung.

J Cell Mol Med

February 2022

State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases, National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases, Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

The role of alveolar macrophages (AMs) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is unclear. We characterized the function of AMs in rats chronically exposed to biomass fuel smoke (BMF) and studied the signal pathways that regulate AMs polarization. One hundred and eighty male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into BMF group and clean air control (CON) group.

Corneal stromal mesenchymal stem cells: reconstructing a bioactive cornea and repairing the corneal limbus and stromal microenvironment.

Int J Ophthalmol

Department of Ophthalmology, First Hospital of Xi'an; Shaanxi Institute of Ophthalmology, Shaanxi Provincial Key Lab of Ophthalmology, Clinical Research Center for Ophthalmology Diseases of Shaanxi Province, the First Affiliated Hospital of Northwest University, Xi'an 710002, Shaanxi Province, China.

Corneal stroma-derived mesenchymal stem cells (CS-MSCs) are mainly distributed in the anterior part of the corneal stroma near the corneal limbal stem cells (LSCs). CS-MSCs are stem cells with self-renewal and multidirectional differentiation potential. A large amount of data confirmed that CS-MSCs can be induced to differentiate into functional keratocytes , which is the motive force for maintaining corneal transparency and producing a normal corneal stroma.

ERICH3: vesicular association and antidepressant treatment response.

Mol Psychiatry

June 2021

Division of Clinical Pharmacology, Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), but only about half of patients benefit from them.
  • A study found a genetic variation in the ERICH3 gene linked to serotonin levels and SSRI effectiveness in various MDD trials, although how ERICH3 influences these outcomes was not fully understood.
  • Further investigations revealed that ERICH3 is highly present in brain cells and interacts with proteins involved in vesicle function, suggesting it may play a key role in serotonin processing which could affect antidepressant response.

Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a major cause of acute kidney injury (AKI) and even induces remote organ damage. Accumulating proofs demonstrates that the endocannabinoid system may provide a promising access for treatment strategy of renal IRI associated AKI. In the current study, using the established renal IRI model of rat, we tested the hypothesis that pretreatment of URB602, 30 min before renal IRI, alleviates kidney injury and relevant distant organ damage via limiting oxidative stress and inflammation.
