Background: Despite the increasing body of evidence that mitochondrial activities implicate in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), we are still far from a causal-logical and mechanistic understanding of the mitochondrial malfunctions in COPD pathogenesis.
Results: Differential expression genes (DEGs) from six publicly available bulk human lung tissue transcriptomic datasets of COPD patients were intersected with the known mitochondria-related genes from MitoCarta3.0 to obtain mitochondria-related DEGs associated with COPD (MitoDEGs).

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate bacterial proliferation within the internal circuits of anesthesia machines in post-anesthesia care units (PACUs) following the implementation of the new protocol, where 'a single dedicated external circuit is used for each individual patient.' This measure was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, in alignment with a novel prevention and control strategy.
Methods: Using the observational technique, we analyzed anesthesia machines in PACUs between July and September 2022.

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a high-burden clinical syndrome characterized by intravascular and extravascular congestion, impacting patients' outcomes. Current diagnostic methods for assessing intravascular congestion, including right heart catheterization (RHC), have some limitations. There is a need for accurate, stable, and widely applicable non-invasive measurement methods to improve HF diagnosis and treatment.

Renal interstitial fibrosis is the main factor determining chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, and renal tubular epithelial cells are the key drivers of this pathological process. Herein, we revealed significantly increased ubiquitin-specific peptidase 10 (USP10) expression in the kidney tissues of both patients with CKD and mice induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction, as well as in transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGFβ1)-induced renal tubular epithelial cells. In vivo, treatment with the USP10 small molecule inhibitor Spautin-1, which inhibits its deubiquitinating activity, weakened renal interstitial fibrosis progression and alleviated the subsequent inflammatory response and oxidative stress in male mice.

Anxiety is one of the most common mental disorders. Neurotensin (NT) is a neuropeptide widely distributed in the central nervous system, involved in the pathophysiology of many neural and psychiatric disorders such as anxiety. However, the neural substrates mediating NT's effect on the regulation of anxiety have not been fully identified.

In this study, we developed an Evidential Ensemble Neural Network based on Deep learning and Diffusion MRI, namely DDEvENet, for anatomical brain parcellation. The key innovation of DDEvENet is the design of an evidential deep learning framework to quantify predictive uncertainty at each voxel during a single inference. To do so, we design an evidence-based ensemble learning framework for uncertainty-aware parcellation to leverage the multiple dMRI parameters derived from diffusion MRI.

Longikaurin A (LK-A), a naturally occurring ent-kaurane diterpenoid, has been identified as a promising anti-cancer agent. This study aims to elucidate the anti-tumorigenic effects of LK-A on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells and to unravel its underlying mechanisms. assays, including CCK-8 and EdU, were performed to assess cell viability and proliferation.

Background: Critical illness-associated immune dysfunction (CIID) is prevalent in the ICU and frequently resulted in uncontrollably immune responses. Critical immunological dysfunction is understood to be important, although there are currently no clinically accepted diagnostic criteria for it. Given this, we examined the literature and developed an initial diagnostic criterion that we validated using the MIMIC-IV database.

Macrophages are widely distributed in peripheral blood, lungs, liver, brain, kidneys, skin, testes, vascular endothelial cells, and other parts of the body. As sentinel cells of innate immunity, they play an important role in the occurrence and development of sepsis. Recent research in immune metabolism has revealed the complicated relationship between specific metabolic pathways of macrophages and their phenotype and function in sepsis.

Infections caused by persistent, drug-resistant bacteria pose significant challenges in inflammation treatment, often leading to severe morbidity and mortality. Herein, the photosensitizer rhodamine derivatives are selected as the light-trapping dye and the electron-rich substituent N-nitrosoaminophen as the nitric oxide (NO)-releasing component to develop a multifunctional (deep) red-light activatable NO photocage/photodynamic prodrug for efficient treatment of wounds and diabetic foot infections. The prodrug, RhB-NO-2 integrates antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), NO sterilization, and NO-mediated anti-inflammatory properties within a small organic molecule and is capable of releasing NO and generating Reactive oxygen species (ROS) when exposed to (deep) red laser (660 nm).

Integrating dietary interventions have been extensively studied for their health benefits, such as Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and aging. However, it is necessary to fully understand the mechanisms of long-term effects and practical applications of these dietary interventions for health. A 10-week intermittent fasting (IMF) regimen was implemented on the aging animals in the current study.

Background: Ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency exhibits a high degree of clinical heterogeneity, making its screening and classification challenging in some instances. In this study, we first established a simple and stable method for testing ornithine transcarbamylase activity using micro blood from newborns, rather than relying on venous blood.
Methods: The activity of ornithine transcarbamylase was assessed by measuring the concentration of citrulline produced in the reaction with carbamoyl phosphate and ornithine, using serum, plasma or micro blood.

Background: Our goal is to develop a nomogram model to predict overall survival (OS) for elderly esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients receiving definitive radiotherapy (RT) or concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT), aiding clinicians in personalized treatment planning with a risk stratification system.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 718 elderly ESCC patients treated with RT or CRT at 10 medical centers (3JECROG) from January 2004 to November 2016. We identified independent prognostic factors using univariate and multifactorial Cox regression to construct a nomogram model.

Introduction: Astrocytoma is the most common glioma, accounting for about 65% of glioblastoma. Its malignant transformation is also one of the important causes of patient mortality, making it the most prevalent and difficult to treat in primary brain tumours. However, little is known about the underlying mechanisms of this transformation.
