Background: Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is one of the major causative agents of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), and can cause severe cerebral complications and even fatality in children younger than 5 years old. However, there is no specific medication for EV71 infection in clinical practice. Our previous studies had identified the 6-thioguanine (6-TG), an FDA-approved anticancer drug, as a potential antiviral agent, but its anti-EV71 activity is largely unknown, therefore, we aim to explore the antiviral effect of 6-TG on EV71.

Smart self-transforming nano-systems for overcoming biological barrier and enhancing tumor treatment efficacy.

J Control Release

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Organic Electronics and Information Displays, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Smart Biomaterials and Theranostic Technology, Institute of Advanced Materials, Jiangsu National Synergetic Innovation Centre for Advanced Materials, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Nanjing 210023, PR China. Electronic address:

Nanomedicines need to overcome multiple biological barriers in the body to reach the target area. However, traditional nanomedicines with constant physicochemical properties are not sufficient to meet the diverse and sometimes conflicting requirements during in vivo transport, making it difficult to penetrate various biological barriers, resulting in suboptimal drug delivery efficiency. Smart self-transforming nano-systems (SSTNs), capable of altering their own physicochemical properties (including size, charge, hydrophobicity, stiffness, morphology, etc.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is a highly common type of malignancy and affects millions of men in the world since it is easy to recur or emerge therapy resistance. Therefore, it is urgent to find novel treatments for PCa patients. In the current study, we found that tegaserod maleate (TM), an FDA-approved agent, inhibited proliferation, colony formation, migration as well as invasion, caused the arrest of the cell cycle, and promoted apoptosis of PCa cells in vitro.

Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, Affiliated Hospital of Medical School, Nanjing University;

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (UC-MSCs) present low immunogenicity and potent immunomodulatory effects for treating various diseases. Human UC-MSCs are a heterogeneous population consisting of three main subpopulations with different cell shapes, proliferation rates, differentiation abilities, and immune regulatory functions. Previously, BAMBIMFGE8 UC-MSCs, the first subgroup successfully isolated from UC-MSCs were found to fail to alleviate lupus nephritis.

Background: Neoadjuvant, endocrine, and targeted therapies have significantly improved the prognosis of breast cancer (BC). However, due to the high heterogeneity of cancer, some patients cannot benefit from existing treatments. Increasing evidence suggests that amino acids and their metabolites can alter the tumor malignant behavior through reshaping tumor microenvironment and regulation of immune cell function.

Background: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent male sexual disorder, commonly associated with hypertension, though the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood.

Objective: This study aims to explore the role of Fatty acid synthase (Fasn) in hypertension-induced ED and evaluate the therapeutic potential of the Fasn inhibitor C75.

Materials And Methods: Erectile function was assessed by determining the intracavernous pressure/mean arterial pressure (ICP/MAP) ratio, followed by the collection of cavernous tissue for transcriptomic and non-targeted metabolomic analyses.

Neurotransmitters crosstalk and regulation in the reward circuit of subjects with behavioral addiction.

Front Psychiatry

January 2025

Xinjiang Clinical Medical Research Center of Mental Health, The Psychological Medicine Center, The First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University, Urumqi, Xinjiang, China.

Behavioral addictive disorders (BADs) have become a significant societal challenge over time. The central feature of BADs is the loss of control over engaging in and continuing behaviors, even when facing negative consequences. The neurobiological underpinnings of BADs primarily involve impairments in the reward circuitry, encompassing the ventral tegmental area, nucleus accumbens in the ventral striatum, and prefrontal cortex.

Background: 17α-Hydroxylase/17,20-lyase deficiency (17OHD) is a rare form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), caused by mutations in the CYP17A1 gene. It typically manifests clinically as variable degree of hypertension, hypokalemia, and disorders of sexual development (DSD), which can include abnormal sexual differentiation in males and sexual infantilism in females. Over 100 mutations in CYP17A1 have been identified, with most cases involving missense mutations or small deletions.

Restoration of independent walking ability is the primary objective of stroke rehabilitation; however, not all patients achieve this goal due to diverse impairments in the paretic lower limb and compensatory mechanisms that lead to an asymmetrical and mechanically inefficient gait. This investigation aimed to examine alterations in cortical activation in post-stroke patients while walking with a wearable two-channel functional electrical stimulation (FES) in comparison to walking without FES. This observational study was conducted to discern distinct activation patterns in 19 stroke patients during sessions with and without FES, while using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to monitor changes in blood oxygen levels.
