Rationale: Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) attract worldwide attention because of their effects in clinical application recorded in China historical ancient codes and in records, such as 'Treatise on Febrile Diseases'. With the developments of drug analysis and research, evaluating the in vivo substances in TCMs has become of great importance. Scutellariae Radix (SR, named as huang-qing in China), the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, has shown favorable clinical effects and safety in the treatment of infection diseases; however, its in vivo compounds are unclear and need detailed investigation.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms underlying the potential effects of hydrogen-rich water (HW) on articular cartilage in a rat osteoarthritis (OA) model. MATERIAL AND METHODS A rat model of OA was established using the modified Hulth method, and rats were forced to exercise for 30 min every day 1 week after surgery for 7 weeks. Mankin's method was used to score the severity of OA.

Background: To evaluate the safety and feasibility of selective occlusion of the hepatic artery and portal vein (SOAP) for staged hepatectomy (SOAPS) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) METHODS: From December 2014 to August 2018, 9 patients with unresectable HCC were chosen to undergo SOAPS. SOAP without liver partition was performed in the first stage. The second stage was performed when future liver remnant (FLR) was equal to or bigger than 40% of the standard liver volume (SLV).

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer globally. However, the practical relevance of the RNA expression-based prediction of BC is not clearly understood and requires further study. Using gene expression data downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), a risk score staging classification was created using Cox's multiple regression and was used to predict the clinical outcomes of patients with BC.

Objective: To analyze the expression level of the serum soluble E cadherin (SE-CAD) and Matriptase and its clinical significance for evaluation of the disease condtions and prognosis in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
Methods: One hundred and ten patients diagnosed as AML in our hospital were divided into 3 groups: newly diagnosed group (38 cases), remission group (40 cases) and recurrence group (32 cases). The expression levels of serum matriptase were detected by Western blot, and the expression levels of serum SE-CAD were detected by ELISA.

Purpose: Lattice corneal dystrophy (LCD) is related to the denaturation of transforming growth factor-β-induced protein (TGFBIp). Autophagic degradation of the denatured proteins by macrophages is one pathway to remove the denatured proteins. Thus, we investigated the role of autophagy in the degradation of mutant (MU) TGFBIp in macrophages.

Bladder cancer is one of the most common malignant diseases in the urinary system, with poor survival after metastasis. Activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID), a versatile enzyme involved in antibody diversification, is an oncogenic gene that induces somatic hypermutation and class-switch recombination (CSR). However, the contribution of AID-mediated DNA demethylation to bladder urothelial cell carcinoma (BUCC) remains unclear.

The current study aimed to evaluate whether luteolin could improve long-term heart preservation; this was achieved by evaluating the heart following long-term storage in University of Wisconsin solution (the control group) and in solutions containing three luteolin concentrations. The effects of different preservation methods were evaluated with respect to cardiac function while hearts were in custom-made Langendorff perfusion systems. Different preservation methods were evaluated with respect to the histology, ultrastructure and apoptosis rate of the hearts, and the function of cardiomyocytes.

Background: Emerging studies reported that preoperative albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) correlated with tumor progression and prognosis in several types of cancer. The aim of this study was to systematically explore the association between preoperative AGR and clinical outcomes in cancers of the urinary system.
Methods: Relevant articles were searched in PubMed, Embase and Web of Science by two independent investigators from inception to June 1, 2018.

Centenarians (CENs) are excellent subjects to study the mechanisms of human longevity and healthy aging. Here, we analyzed the transcriptomes of 76 centenarians, 54 centenarian-children, and 41 spouses of centenarian-children by RNA sequencing and found that, among the significantly differentially expressed genes (SDEGs) exhibited by CENs, the autophagy-lysosomal pathway is significantly up-regulated. Overexpression of several genes from this pathway, , , , and , could promote autophagy and delay senescence in cultured IMR-90 cells, while overexpression of the homolog of , , extended the life span in transgenic flies.

Coralline hydroxyapatite/calcium carbonate (CHACC) is a biodegradable and osteoconductive bone graft material with promising clinical performance. CHACC has been shown to support proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and demonstrated to work as a functional scaffold for bone formation Umbilical cord matrix is a more accessible and abundant tissue source of MSCs, but its osteogenic capacity in comparison to human bone marrow when cultured on CHACC has not yet been demonstrated. In this study, we assessed the osteogenic differentiation capacity of human MSCs, isolated from bone marrow and umbilical cord matrix and characterised by flow cytometry, when cultured on 200-300 m CHACC granules.

Dysregulation of long non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs) participated into the initiation and progression of different diseases via direct regulation of proteins or indirect regulation of microRNA (miRNA)-target genes. LINC00473 is a novel carcinoma-related LncRNA and up-regulated in many cancers for tumor growth and metastasis, but its role in chemotherapy resistance is unclear. We here investigated the function of LINC00473 in colorectal cancer (CRC) and The CRC tissues (=20) and relative normal tissues were collected and found that LINC00473 was overexpressed in CRC tissues when compared with which in normal tissues.

The purpose of this study is to prepare and characterize solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) of N-Acetyl Carnosine (NAC) to treat cataract since surgery necessitates equipments and professional help. Cataract is believed to be formed by the biochemical approach where the crystalline eye proteins lose solubility and forms high molecular weight masses. Added advantages of SLN of NAC (henceforth referred as SLN-NAC) in the study are reduced size, sustained release and better corneal penetration of drug.

Mitoquinone (MitoQ) is a powerful mitochondrial-targeted antioxidant whose neuroprotective effects have been shown in a variety of animal models of neurological diseases. However, its roles in traumatic brain injury (TBI) remain unexplored. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the neuroprotection afforded by MitoQ in a mouse model of TBI, and the involvement of the Nrf2-ARE signaling pathway in the putative neuroprotective mechanism.

Accumulating evidence suggests that autophagy plays a protective role in chondrocytes and prevents cartilage degeneration in osteoarthritis (OA). The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of diazoxide on chondrocyte death and cartilage degeneration and to determine whether these effects are correlated to autophagy in experimental OA. In this study, a cellular OA model was established by stimulating SW1353 cells with interleukin 1β.

Immunogenic cell death (ICD) is a specific kind of cell death that stimulates the immune system to combat cancer cells. Ultrasound (US)-controlled targeted release of drugs by liposome-microbubble complexes is a promising approach due to its non-invasive nature and visibility through ultrasound imaging. However, it is not known whether this approach can enhance ICD induced by drugs, such as doxorubicin.

Dexamethasone (Dex) is commonly used to treat glioma; however, the mechanism underlying the action of Dex remains unclear. In the present study, the hypothesis that aquaporin-1 (AQP1) may participate in tumor cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration and invasion was tested using small interfering RNA (siRNA). The results of the current study indicated that Dex could inhibit the proliferation, in addition to promoting the migration, of C6 cells.
