Introduction: The risk of surgery and postoperative complications increases greatly in frail older patients with sarcopenia. The purpose of this study is to explore the correlation between myostatin (MSTN) levels and cognitive function and postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in older patients undergoing thoracoscopic lobectomy and to determine whether MSTN could be used to predict the risk of postoperative complications and cognitive impairment.

Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted at the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College, China, between January 2023 and June 2023.

Adiposity and obesity-related proteins (FTO), the earliest identified mRNA -methyladenosine (mA) demethylases, are known to play crucial roles in several biological processes. Therefore, FTO is a promising target for anticancer treatment. Understanding the biological functions and regulatory mechanisms of FTO targets can serve as guidelines for drug development.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the effectiveness of befotertinib, a drug for treating non-small cell lung cancer with EGFR T790M mutation, showing positive outcomes in patients with brain metastases and a manageable safety profile.
  • Two groups of patients received different doses of the drug, and after tracking their progress for nearly four years, the overall survival rates were reported as 23.9 months and 31.5 months for the lower and higher doses, respectively.
  • The results suggest that befotertinib offers significant overall survival benefits compared to other third-generation treatments, with adverse effects mostly manageable and in line with previous findings for similar cancer types.

Ulcerative colitis (UC)-induced colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) has a worse prognosis than sporadic colorectal cancer. And with the incidence of ulcerative colitis on the rise, it is critical to identify new therapeutic targets in time to stop the progression of inflammation to cancer. Through immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database analysis, we acquired the gene M2DEG, which is differentially expressed in M2 macrophages.

Background: Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/R) has been improved with drugs and effective reperfusion, but it still cannot be prevented.

Methods: To investigate whether renal denervation (RDN) reduces cardiomyocyte apoptosis by ameliorating endoplasmic reticulum stress, 60 male specific pathogen-free (SPF) Wistar rats were randomly divided into 6 groups (n = 6). We established the I/R rat model by ligating the left anterior descending artery.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate 10 estimating glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) equations in central China population and construct a diagnostic prediction model for assessing the kidney damage severity.

Methods: The concordance of 10 eGFR equations was investigated in healthy individuals from central China, and their clinical effectiveness in diagnosing kidney injury was evaluated. Subsequently, relevant clinical indicators were selected to develop a clinical prediction model for kidney damage.

Background: Neutrophils play important roles in atherosclerosis and atherothrombosis. Bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) is mainly expressed in the granules of human neutrophils in response to inflammatory stress. This observational, cross-sectional study investigated the plasma level of BPI in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and its correlation with blood neutrophil counts and circulating inflammatory biomarkers.

Objective: To analyze the characteristics and prognosis of patients with mucormycosis after chemotherapy for acute leukemia, and to strengthen understanding of the disease.

Methods: 7 cases of acute leukemia (AL) patients diagnosed with mucormycosis by metagenomic next generation sequencing (mNGS) after chemotherapy at the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College from October 2021 to June 2022 were collected, and their clinical data, including clinical characteristics, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, were retrospectively analyzed.

Results: Among the 7 patients with AL complicated with mucormycosis, there were 3 males and 4 females, with a median age of 52(20-59) years.

Background: Liver metastasis of CRC is still the main cause of poor prognosis in patients with CRC. Previous studies have suggested that serpin family C member 1(SERPINC1) is involved in the development of a variety of tumours, but its effect on colorectal cancer progression has been poorly elucidated.

Methods: Based on the GEO database, this study identifies the core gene SERPINC1 associated with liver metastasis in CRC.

SepM mutation in Streptococcus mutans clinical isolates and related function analysis.

BMC Oral Health

June 2024

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Bengbu Medical College, 2600 Dong Hai Avenue, Bengbu, 233030, China.

Article Synopsis
  • ) S. mutans is a bacterium that contributes to dental cavities, while S. gordonii helps inhibit its growth; the role of the SepM protein in enhancing S. mutans's inhibitory effects on S. gordonii was investigated.
  • ) The study involved analyzing 286 clinical strains of S. mutans, distinguishing between those capable of inhibiting S. gordonii and those that could not, and looking for mutations in the sepM gene.
  • ) Key findings revealed specific mutations (C482T, G533A, and G661A) were more common in the inhibitory strains, with some mutations leading to increased expression of important proteins involved in the bacteria's interaction, suggesting that these mutations enhance S. mut
