Article Synopsis
  • Platinum-resistant ovarian cancer is a severe and deadly gynecological disease with few effective treatment options, and chiauranib is a new drug that targets multiple pathways to help treat it.
  • A phase II study assessed chiauranib combined with either etoposide or weekly-paclitaxel chemotherapy in Chinese patients with recurrent ovarian cancer, focusing on progression-free survival (PFS) as the main outcome.
  • The results showed that patients receiving the combination treatment had improved PFS (about 5.4-5.6 months), indicating that chiauranib may be a promising option in treating this type of cancer, leading to plans for further studies.

ALYREF promotes the metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma by increasing the stability of NOTCH1 mRNA.

Cell Death Dis

August 2024

VIP Region, State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Guangdong Key Laboratory of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Diagnosis and Therapy, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Guangzhou, Guangdong, PR China.

Approximately 70% of treatment failures in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients are attributed to distant metastasis, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. RNA 5-methylcytosine (m5C) is an emerging regulatory modification that controls gene expression and plays a critical role in tumor progression. However, there is little information on the potential roles of RNA m5C modification in NPC metastasis.

Purpose: Parathyroidectomy is beneficial in tertiary hyperparathyroidism (THPT) consequent to chronic renal failure. The craniofacial morphology of patients who undergo total parathyroidectomy and autologous transplantation (tPTX + AT) has not been widely studied. This study assessed the efficacy of tPTX + AT in THPT and evaluated possible improvements in craniofacial features.

Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) play a crucial role in the progression of asthma, yet the regulatory mechanisms modulating ILC2 responses in asthma remain underexplored. Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), vital non-nutritive components of breast milk, are known to significantly shape immune system development and influence the incidence of allergic diseases. However, their impact on ILC2-driven asthma is not fully understood.

Objective: Changes in glucolipid metabolism parameters in patients undergoing renal transplantation (RT) and their influences on the incidence of postoperative complications were analysed. The objective was to provide a reference for clinical practice and reliable and safe implementation of RT.

Methods: A total of 131 patients treated with RT at our institution from January 2019 to March 2024 were selected for retrospective analysis: 71 patients who developed postoperative complications (research group) and 60 patients who did not (control group).

Article Synopsis
  • Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) poses a major global health challenge, with high rates of illness and death.
  • Recent research suggests a connection between an altered microbiome and metabolic changes in patients suffering from severe CAP (sCAP), but the exact nature of this relationship is still not fully understood.
  • The study utilized advanced techniques to analyze sputum and serum samples, identifying specific microbial and metabolite profiles that indicate a disrupted interaction between respiratory microbiota and host metabolism, which could inform better diagnosis and treatment approaches for sCAP.

Inflammatory response mediated by M1 microglia is a crucial factor leading to the exacerbation of brain injury after ischemic stroke (IS). Under the stimulation of IS, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) switch to the synthetic phenotype characterized by exosome secretion. Previous studies have shown that exosomes play an important role in the regulation of microglial polarization.

Introduction: Postoperative radiotherapy in patients with breast cancer with one to three lymph node metastases, particularly within the pT1-2N1M0 cohort with a low clinical risk of local-regional recurrence (LRR), has incited a discourse surrounding personalised treatment strategies. Multigene testing for Recurrence Index (RecurIndex) model capably differentiates patients based on their level of LRR risk. This research aims to validate whether a more aggressive treatment approach can enhance clinical outcomes in N1 patients who possess a clinically low risk of LRR, yet a high RecurIndex-determined risk of LRR.

Background: Pheochromocytoma-induced takotsubo syndrome (Pheo-TTS) significantly increases the risk of adverse events for inpatient. The early identification of risk factors at admission is crucial for effective risk stratification and minimizing complications in Pheo-TTS patients.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review combined with hierarchical cluster and feature importance analysis of demographic, clinical and laboratory data upon admission, alongside in-hospital complication data for Pheo-TTS patients.

July 2024

National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Tracking and Forecasting for Infectious Diseases, National Institute for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing, 102206, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers analyzed 146 isolates, identifying various mutations and assessing their impact on EMB resistance through minimum inhibitory concentration testing and statistical modeling.
  • * Results showed that certain mutations (Met306Val, Met306Ile, Gly406Ala, and Gln497Arg) were significantly related to EMB resistance, with some mutations strongly correlating with high-level resistance, highlighting the complex genetic factors influencing EMB susceptibility.

Background: Scoliosis is a multifaceted three-dimensional deformity that significantly affects patients' balance function and walking process. While existing research primarily focuses on spatial and temporal parameters of walking and trunk/pelvic kinematics asymmetry, there remains controversy regarding the symmetry and regularity of bilateral lower limb gait. This study aims to investigate the symmetry and regularity of bilateral lower limb gait and examine the balance control strategy of the head during walking in patients with idiopathic scoliosis.

Large labeled data bring significant performance improvement, but acquiring labeled medical data is particularly challenging due to the laborious, time-consuming, and medically qualified annotation. Semi-supervised learning has been employed to leverage unlabeled data. However, the quality and quantity of annotated data have a great influence on the performance of the semi-supervised model.

Metastasis is a principal factor in the poor prognosis of colorectal cancer. Recent studies have found microbial metabolites regulate colorectal cancer metastasis. By analyzing metabolomics data, we identified an essential fecal metabolite citraconate that potentially promotes colorectal cancer metastasis.

The Potential Mechanism of Remission in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus After Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy.

Obes Surg

August 2024

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, No.57 Mei Hua East Road, Xiang Zhou District, Zhuhai, 519000, Guangdong, China.

In recent years, there has been a gradual increase in the prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), with bariatric surgery remaining the most effective treatment strategy for these conditions. Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) has emerged as the most popular surgical procedure for bariatric/metabolic surgeries, effectively promoting weight loss and improving or curing T2DM. The alterations in the gastrointestinal tract following VSG may improve insulin secretion and resistance by increasing incretin secretion (especially GLP-1), modifying the gut microbiota composition, and through mechanisms dependent on weight loss.
