Objectives: Comorbidity prediction models have been demonstrated to offer more comprehensive and accurate predictions of death risk compared to single indices. However, their application in China has been limited, particularly among maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of comorbidity index models in predicting mortality risk among Chinese MHD patients.

Article Synopsis
  • About 20% of patients being treated for chronic hepatitis B experience low-level viraemia (LLV), leading to inflammation, fibrosis progression, and higher cancer risk.
  • In a study of 1,653 patients treated with entecavir, factors like HBeAg positivity, high HBV DNA levels, and liver cirrhosis were found to be significantly linked to the development of LLV.
  • The findings suggest that monitoring high HBV DNA/HBsAg levels, low platelet counts, and liver health is crucial for identifying patients at risk for LLV during treatment.

  • Spastic pelvic floor syndrome (SPFS) causes abnormal muscle contractions during defecation, leading to issues like constipation and anal blockage, which often requires manual assistance for bowel movements.
  • The study aimed to examine the impacts of botulinum toxin A injections combined with biofeedback on anorectal pressure in patients with pelvic floor muscle spasm syndrome.
  • Results showed a significant decrease in muscle tension and blood pressure after treatment, suggesting this approach is effective, but further research, including randomized controlled trials, is needed to confirm these findings.

Isoflurane-induced neuroinflammation and NKCC1/KCC2 dysregulation result in long-term cognitive disorder in neonatal mice.

BMC Anesthesiol

June 2024

Department of Anesthesiology, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-Sen University, No. 107 Yanjiang West Road, Guangzhou, 510120, China.

Background: The inhalational anesthetic isoflurane is commonly utilized in clinical practice, particularly in the field of pediatric anesthesia. Research has demonstrated its capacity to induce neuroinflammation and long-term behavioral disorders; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear [1]. The cation-chloride cotransporters Na-K-2Cl-1 (NKCC1) and K-2Cl-2 (KCC2) play a pivotal role in regulating neuronal responses to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) [2].

A label-free photoelectrochemical biosensor for silver ions based on Zn-Co doped C and CdS QD nanomaterials.

Anal Methods

May 2024

Key Laboratory of Optic-electric Sensing and Analytical Chemistry for Life Science, MOE, College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Qingdao University of Science and Technology, Qingdao, 266042, PR China.

A sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor for silver ions (Ag) was developed based on Zn-Co doped C and CdS quantum dot (CdS QD) nanomaterials. Hydrophobic modified sodium alginate (HMA), which could stabilize and improve the PEC performance of CdS QDs, was also used for the construction of PEC sensors. Especially, Zn-Co doped C, CdS QDs and HMA were sequentially modified onto an electrode surface the drop-coating method, and a C base rich DNA strand was then immobilized onto the modified electrode.

Objective: Anterior nucleus of thalamus (ANT) has been widely accepted as a potential therapeutic target for drug-resistant epilepsy. Although increased volume of the ANT was also reported in patients with absence epilepsy, the relationship between the ANT and absence epilepsy has been barely illustrated.

Methods: Using chemogenetics, we evaluated the effect of ANT parvalbumin (PV) neurons on pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced absence seizures in mice.

September 2022

Department of Gynecology, Jiaozhou Peoples Hospital, Qingdao, Yunxi Henan Road, Jiaozhou City, Qingdao 266300, China.

Considering the increasing number of elderly in the world, this research aimed to investigate the effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on changes in muscle mRNA abundance of a number of gene targets for improving the balance of the elderly. Twenty-six elderly undertook 30 minutes of quadriceps NMES (50 Hz, current at the limit of tolerance). Vastus lateralis muscle biopsies were obtained at rest immediately before and 24 hours after the intervention.

BCS1L pathogenic variants cause widely different clinical phenotypes. Disease phenotypes can be as mild as Björnstad syndrome, characterized by pili torti (abnormal flat twisted hair shafts) and sensorineural hearing loss, or as severe as GRACILE syndrome, characterized by growth restriction, aminoaciduria, cholestasis, iron overload, lactic acidosis and early death. BCS1L pathogenic variants are also linked to an undefined complex III deficiency, a heterogeneous condition generally involving renal and hepatic pathologies, hypotonia, and developmental delays.

Since abdominal muscle training is one of the most important ways to treat rectal diastasis, it is necessary to design and provide appropriate exercises to treat this problem. One of the complementary methods to achieve higher intensity training is the use of electrical muscle stimulation along with voluntary activity, which causes maximum recall in muscle units. Therefore, in the current study, the effect of electrical stimulation followed by exercises was evaluated in postnatal diastasis recti abdominis via MMP2 gene expression.

Front Microbiol

February 2022

Food Safety Key Laboratory of Zhejiang Province, School of Food Science and Biotechnology, Zhejiang Gongshang University, Hangzhou, China.

Microorganisms have developed many strategies in the process of long-term defense against external attacks, one of which is the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated proteins (Cas) bacterial immunological system. In this study, the whole genome of 300 strains of was collected, the CRISPR-Cas system in the strains was statistically analyzed, and the types and structures of CRISPR system in were explored, as well as the correlation between CRISPR and mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Through principal component analysis (PCA), we found that Cas gene, plasmids, integron, IS, IS, and enzymes of DNA metabolism were closely related to CRISPR-Cas.

Comput Biol Med

January 2022

School of Mechanical, Electrical and Information Engineering, Shandong University, Weihai, China. Electronic address:

To facilitate the identification of arrhythmia, in this study, an S-shaped reconstruction method was proposed, and a two-dimensional (2-D) 19-layer deep squeeze-and-excitation residual network (SE-ResNet) was used to classify heartbeats. The proposed method has three steps. The first step involves data preprocessing, which includes denoising of the original electrocardiogram (ECG) data, removing of baseline drift, heartbeat extraction, and data balancing using a synthetic minority oversampling technique algorithm.
