Introduction: Lateral temporal neural measures (Na and T-complex Ta and Tb) of the auditory evoked potential (AEP) index auditory/speech processing and have been observed in children and adults. While Na is already present in children under 4 years of age, Ta emerges from 4 years of age, and Tb appears even later. The T-complex has been found to be sensitive to language experience in Spanish-English and Turkish-German children and adults.

Background: Transgender and nonbinary individuals have received increasing attention within HIV research, with studies documenting the pervasive role stigma plays in creating and sustaining health inequities. However, the proliferation of HIV stigma research with this population has also raised concerns about research practices that may unintentionally stigmatize or retraumatize the very communities they are designed to benefit. Conducting stigma research is critical for generating accurate information about HIV epidemiology, risk and protective factors, and intervention strategies for transgender and nonbinary individuals.

Eggshell recognition in parental birds is vital for nest management, defense against brood parasitism, optimal embryonic development, and minimizing disease and predation risks. This process relies on acceptance thresholds balancing the risk of rejecting own eggs against the benefit of excluding foreign ones, following signal detection theory. We investigated the role of object shape in egg rejection decisions among three host species of the brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater), each with a varying known response to parasitic eggs.

NCI RAS Initiative, Cancer Research Technology Program, Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc., P.O. Box B, Frederick 21702, Maryland, United States.

Molecular docking methods are widely used in drug discovery efforts. RAS proteins are important cancer drug targets, and are useful systems for evaluating docking methods, including accounting for solvation effects and covalent small molecule binding. Water often plays a key role in small molecule binding to RAS proteins, and many inhibitors─including FDA-approved drugs─covalently bind to oncogenic RAS proteins.

The paired watershed monitoring approach is widely used to investigate hydrologic processes and water quality, providing streamflow and water quality records for long-term trend analysis, as well as data for developing and testing hydrologic models. In this study we use 20 years of streamflow and water quality data, along with a watershed model, to examine sources of stream nutrients and their changes over time in two small streams within the New York City water supply system. We compare sources and trends in stream nitrate and dissolved phosphorus in the urbanized Amawalk watershed with those of the predominantly forested Boyd Corners watershed in the Croton system of reservoirs.

Article Synopsis
  • Electric quadrupole traps effectively levitate charged objects, from protons to small particles, influencing their rotational behavior when charge distribution varies.
  • Experiments reveal a shift in motion for microparticles, transitioning from librational to synchronized rotation with the trap drive due to torque effects from the electric quadrupole.
  • This technique showcases versatility by spinning various particles like silicon microrods and microdiamonds, with the latter enabling detailed motion analysis through embedded nitrogen vacancy centers, promising advances in levitated quantum nanomechanics.

Optimization of Existing RNA Visualization Methods Reveals Novel Dendritic mRNA Dynamics.

Front Biosci (Landmark Ed)

December 2024

Department of Biological Sciences, Hunter College, City University of New York, New York, NY 10065, USA.

Background: Spatial-temporal control of mRNA translation in dendrites is important for synaptic plasticity. In response to pre-synaptic stimuli, local mRNA translation can be rapidly triggered near stimulated synapses to supply the necessary proteins for synapse maturation or elimination, and 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) are responsible for proper localization of mRNAs in dendrites. Although is a robust technique for analyzing RNA localization in fixed neurons, live-cell imaging of RNA dynamics remains challenging.

School of Materials Science and Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, North Ave NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30332, United States.

Bulky organic cations are used in perovskite solar cells as a protective barrier against moisture, oxygen, and ion diffusion. However, bulky cations can introduce thermal instabilities by reacting with the near-surface of the 3D perovskite forming low-dimensional phases, including 2D perovskites, and by diffusing away from the surface into the film. This study explores the thermal stability of CsFAPbI 3D perovskite surfaces treated with two anthracene salts─anthracen-1-ylmethylammonium iodide (AMAI) and 2-(anthracen-1-yl)ethylammonium iodide (AEAI)─and compares them with the widely used phenethylammonium iodide (PEAI).

Cognitive models posit that negatively biased attention toward dysphoric information has a causal role in the maintenance of depression-related psychopathology. Attention bias modification (ABM) tests this idea by altering an attentional bias and examining subsequent effects on depression. Prior work finds that ABM alters negatively biased attention for dysphoric information and reduces depression; however, a number of studies have failed to show these effects.

The brain's primary immune cells, microglia, are a leading causal cell type in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Yet, the mechanisms by which microglia can drive neurodegeneration remain unresolved. Here, we discover that a conserved stress signaling pathway, the integrated stress response (ISR), characterizes a microglia subset with neurodegenerative outcomes.

Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College, London SW72AZ, UK.

The quantum interference effects of mixing the most non-classical states of light, number states, with the most classical-like of pure field states, the coherent state, are investigated. We demonstrate how the non-classicality of a single photon when mixed with a coherent field can transform the statistical properties of the output and further demonstrate that the entanglement of the output is independent of the coherent state amplitude. This article is part of the theme issue 'The quantum theory of light'.

Introduction: Recent evidence suggests that autonomic nervous system functioning can reflect individual differences in sensitivity to the environment, which in turn moderates the effects of family context on psychopathic and antisocial behaviour. Although some preliminary research suggests that the coordination of the sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic (PNS) branches of the autonomic nervous system may reflect sensitivity to environmental influences, the majority of research to date has been limited in its focus on just one branch, and little is known about the effects of parental empathy on a child's psychopathic-like traits. This study aimed to address this gap by examining if the SNS and PNS jointly moderate the prospective contribution of parental empathy to youth psychopathic-like traits.

Creating software tools that address the needs of a wide range of decision-makers requires the inclusion of differing perspectives throughout the development process. Software tools for biodiversity conservation often fall short in this regard, partly because broad decision-maker needs may exceed the toolkits of single research groups or even institutions. We show that participatory, collaborative codesign enhances the utility of software tools for better decision-making in biodiversity conservation planning, as demonstrated by our experiences developing a set of integrated tools in Colombia.

ACS Nano

December 2024

Department of Biomedical Engineering, The City College of New York, New York, New York 10031, United States.

Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) may serve as signal transducers for nanobiosensors. Recent studies have developed innovative methods of engineering molecularly specific sensors, while others have devised methods of deploying such sensors within live animals and plants. These advances may potentiate the use of implantable, noninvasive biosensors for continuous drug, disease, and contaminant monitoring based on the optical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs).

Nonlinear Elasticity of Amorphous Silicon and Silica from Density Functional Theory.

J Phys Chem C Nanomater Interfaces

December 2024

Department of Chemistry, College of Staten Island, Staten Island, New York 10314, United States.

Density functional theory calculations and a finite deformation method are used to calculate second- and, most notably, third-order elastic constants of amorphous silicon and amorphous silicon dioxide, as represented by model structures generated via melt-quench force-field molecular dynamics simulations. Linear and nonlinear elastic constants are used to deduce macroscopic elastic moduli, such as the bulk and shear moduli, their pressure derivatives, and the elastic Grüneisen parameter. Our calculations show that the elastic properties of amorphous silicon reach the isotropic elastic limit within the nanometer length scale, attaining characteristics, both linear and nonlinear, comparable to those of crystalline silicon.

Studies with genetically modified mice have implicated the transcriptional regulator STAT3 as a key modulator of bone development. STAT3-OKO knockout mouse lines were generated in two genetic backgrounds, pure C57BL/6 (STAT3-OKO-BL) and mixed C57BL/6, CD1 (STAT3-OKO-M). Both lines exhibited defective postnatal bone development resulting in reduced body weight and shortened femurs that displayed low bone mineral density as well as cortical widening and thinning in the diaphyseal region.

Department of Chemistry, York College of the City University of New York, Jamaica, New York 11451, USA; PhD Programs in Chemistry and Biochemistry, Graduate Center of the City University of New York, New York 10016, USA. Electronic address:

Atherosclerosis, the major underlying cause of cardiovascular disease, is believed to arise from the accumulation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the arterial subendothelial space, ultimately leading to plaque formation. It is proposed that the accumulation of LDL is linked to its intrinsic aggregation propensity. Although the native LDL is not prone to aggregation, LDL(-), an electronegative LDL characterized in the plasma, has been shown to prime LDL aggregation in a domino-like behavior similar to amyloidogenic proteins.

We perform classical molecular dynamics (MD) and path-integral MD (PIMD) simulations of H2O and D2O using the q-TIP4P/F model over a wide range of temperatures and pressures to study the nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) on (i) the vitrification of liquid water upon isobaric cooling at different pressures and (ii) pressure-induced transformations at constant temperature between low-density amorphous and high-density amorphous ice (LDA and HDA) and hexagonal ice Ih and HDA. Upon isobaric cooling, classical and quantum H2O and D2O vitrify into a continuum of intermediate amorphous ices (IA), with densities in-between those of LDA and HDA (depending on pressure). Importantly, the density of the IA varies considerably if NQEs are included (similar conclusions hold for ice Ih at all pressures studied).

Polarizability, plasmons and damping in pseudospin-1 gapped materials with a flat band.

J Phys Condens Matter

December 2024

Space Vehicles Directorate, US Air Force Research Laboratory, Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM 87117, United States of America.

The subject of our present investigation is the collective electronic properties of various types of pseudospin-1 Dirac-cone materials with a flat band and finite bandgaps in their low-energy spectra. Specifically, we have calculated the dynamical polarization, plasmon dispersions, as well as their decay rates due to Landau damping and presented the closed-form analytical expressions for the wave function overlaps for both the gapped dice lattice and the Lieb lattice. The gapped dice lattice is a special case of the more general-T3model such that its band structure is symmetric and the flat band remains dispersionless.
