Background: Status epilepticus (SE) leads to memory impairment following a seizure, attributed to long-term potentiation (LTP) reduction. Thrombin, a coagulation factor that activates protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR1) is involved in cognitive impairment following traumatic brain injury by reducing hippocampal LTP and in seizures as seen in a SE pilocarpine-induced mice model. Thrombin pathway inhibition prevents this cognitive impairment.

Background: Autoimmune neutropenia (AIN) is divided into primary and secondary forms. The former is more prevalent in children and is usually a self-limiting disease. Secondary AIN is more common in adults and often occurs in the setting of another autoimmune disorder or secondary to infections, malignancies or medications.

Background: PIPAC (Pressurized IntraPeritoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy) is a minimally invasive approach relying on physical principles for improving intraperitoneal drug delivery, including optimizing the homogeneity of drug distribution through an aerosol. Feasibility and safety of the new approach are now consolidated and data on its effectiveness are continuously increasing. Although any surgical procedure associated with PIPAC had always been discouraged due to the high risk of complications, surgical practice is constantly changing: with growing expertise, more and more surgical teams associate PIPAC with surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) impacts the brain through both abnormal blood clotting and immune responses, related to specific autoantibodies affecting proteins like beta-2-glycoprotein I (β2-GPI) and annexin A2 (ANXA2).
  • In a study using mouse models, teriflunomide—a drug for multiple sclerosis—showed potential in reducing anxiety-like behaviors early on and alleviating some neuroinflammation effects in mice with ANXA2-related APS, although later tests indicated depression-like behaviors.
  • While teriflunomide did not lower overall serum autoantibody levels in the mice, it did help normalize IgG levels in the brain associated with ANXA2,

Invasive Fungal Pneumonia in Immunocompromised Patients.

Radiol Clin North Am

May 2022

Department of Diagnostic Radiology, The Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Affiliated with the Tel Aviv University, 2 Derech Sheba St, Ramat Gan 5265601, Israel.

Fungal pneumonia is the most frequent presentation of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) in patients with hematologic malignancies (HM) and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients. The most common causes include Aspergillus, Mucor, Fusarium, and Candida species. The high incidence and high morbidity and mortality rate of fungal pneumonias in HM/HSCT populations arise from severe immune dysfunction that may be caused by both the underlying disease and/or its treatment.

Purpose: Exercise is a valuable intervention modality for patients post-myocardial infarction (MI). Aerobic and resistance training are both commonly used separately in cardiac rehabilitation. However, the effect of aerobic interval exercise combined with alternating sets of resistance training (super-circuit training, SCT) on cardiac electrophysiologic and anthropometric measures had not been thoroughly investigated.

Fructose consumption is associated with metabolic syndrome (MeS). Dysregulated lipid metabolism and ectopic lipid accumulation, such as in "fatty liver'', are pivotal components of the syndrome. MeS is also associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Background: Single ventricle heart disease comprises a wide variety of critical heart defects that lead to the provision of systemic cardiac output by one dominant ventricle. It requires staged surgical palliation that culminates in Fontan circulation. Dominant ventricular morphology in single ventricle patients reportedly has an impact on postoperative morbidity and mortality with varying results.

Risk Behaviors, Family Support, and Emotional Health among Adolescents during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Israel.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

March 2022

Department of Health System Management, Faculty of Health Science, Ariel University, Ariel 40700, Israel.

We investigated the prevalence of risk behaviors among Israeli adolescents (tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, drug use) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Associations between different risk behaviors were examined and so was whether specific characteristics could predict risk behaviors in adolescents. The study consisted of 1020 Israeli adolescents aged 15-18.

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), the most frequent monogenic autoinflammatory disease, is manifested with recurrent and chronic inflammation and amyloid A (AA) amyloidosis, driven by overproduction of interleukin 1 (IL-1) through an activated pyrin inflammasome. Consequently, non-responsiveness to colchicine, the cornerstone of FMF treatment, is nowadays addressed by IL-1- blockers. Each of the two IL-1 blockers currently used in FMF, anakinra and canakinumab, has its own merits for FMF care.

Pancreatic β-cells couple glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) with oxidative phosphorylation via cytochrome c oxidase (COX), a mitochondrial respiratory-chain enzyme. The Cohen diabetic-sensitive (CDs) rats exhibit hyperglycemia when fed a diabetogenic diet but maintain normoglycemia on a regular diet. We have previously reported a decreased COX activity in CDs rats and explored its relevance for type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Thymic epithelial tumors are presently staged using a consistent TNM classification developed by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and approved by the Union for International Cancer Control and the American Joint Committee on Cancer. The stage classification is incorporated in the eight edition of the TNM classification of thoracic malignancies. The IASLC Staging and Prognostic Factors Committee (SPFC)-Thymic Domain (TD) is in charge for the next (ninth) edition expected in 2024.

Introduction: Maternal glycemic state is positively correlated with fetal insulin secretion. Randomized control studies have shown that treatment during pregnancy inhibits to some degree this glycemic effect. Our study aimed to assess fetal pancreas size in a population of treated mothers with gestational diabetes.

Emerging evidence suggests that disruption of circadian rhythmicity contributes to development of comorbid depression, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Physical exercise synchronizes the circadian system and has ameliorating effects on the depression- and anxiety-like phenotype induced by circadian disruption in mice and sand rats. We explored the beneficial effects of voluntary wheel running on daily rhythms, and the development of depression, T2DM, and CVD in a diurnal animal model, the fat sand rat (Psammomys obesus).

Surgical targeting of the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus (VIM) has been historically done using indirect strategies. Here we depict the cerebello-thalamo-cortical tract (CTCT) through 3 T proton density (PD) in a cohort of patients who underwent high-intensity focus ultrasound (HIFUS) thalamotomy. Forty-seven patients treated in our institution with MR-guided HIFUS VIM thalamotomy were included in this study.
