Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infections can manifest as either pocket or systemic infections, both requiring complete removal of the device and targeted antibiotic treatment.
  • A study analyzed 300 patients and found that those with systemic infections presented more frequently with symptoms like leukocytosis and fever compared to those with isolated pocket infections.
  • The study highlights a new category of "complicated pocket infection," suggesting that it should be recognized separately in future discussions of CIED infections due to its similar prognosis to isolated pocket infections despite presenting with more severe symptoms.

Availability of haploidentical donors has broadened utilization of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT). Peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) are being used with increased frequency in haploidentical allo-HCT. We evaluated extent of HLA disparity (2-3/8 versus 4/8 HLA antigen mismatches) on post-allograft outcomes when using T-cell replete PBSC from haploidentical donors for acute myeloid leukemia in first complete remission.

Information regarding post-travel morbidity is usually reported via dedicated post-travel clinics and mainly relates to travelers returning from low-middle-income countries (LMIC), however, the spectrum of morbidity seen within the community setting is scarcely reported. This prospective observational study among visitors to 17 community Urgent Care Centers (UCC) was designed to evaluate the reasons for post-travel community clinic visits and to compare travelers returning from LMIC to high-income countries (HIC). All visitors within one-month post-travel to all destinations were included.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is considered the most common neurological disorder among people under the age of 50. In modern combat zones, a combination of TBI and organophosphates (OP) can cause both fatal and long-term effects on the brain. We utilized a mouse closed-head TBI model induced by a weight drop device, along with OP exposure to paraoxon.

The Anti-Tumorigenic Role of Cannabinoid Receptor 2 in Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer.

Int J Mol Sci

April 2023

Department of Anatomy and Anthropology, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv 69978, Israel.

Five million non-melanoma skin cancers occur globally each year, and it is one of the most common malignant cancers. The dysregulation of the endocannabinoid system, particularly cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), is implicated in skin cancer development, progression, and metastasis. Comparing wildtype (WT) to systemic CB2 knockout (CB2) mice, we performed a spontaneous cancer study in one-year old mice, and subsequently used the multi-stage chemical carcinogenesis model, wherein cancer is initiated by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) and promoted by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA).

Graft failure has remained a limitation of umbilical cord blood transplantation (CBT). Here, we assessed the outcomes of patients who experienced graft failure after CBT. Inclusion criteria were patients (age ≥ 18 years) experiencing graft failure after unrelated CBT (single or double) between 2005 and 2016, for acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) or acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), no prior allogeneic or autologous transplantation, no other stem cell product.

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation is a potentially curative treatment in high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Conditioning regimens based on ≥12 Gray total body irradiation (TBI) represent the current standard in patients ≤45 years, whereas elderly patients frequently receive intermediate intensity conditioning (IIC) to reduce toxicity. To evaluate the role of TBI as a backbone of IIC in ALL, a retrospective, registry-based study included patients >45 years transplanted from matched donors in first complete remission, who had received either fludarabine/TBI 8 Gy (FluTBI8, n = 262), or the most popular, irradiation-free alternative fludarabine/busulfan, comprising busulfan 6.

The Anti-Tumorigenic Role of Cannabinoid Receptor 2 in Colon Cancer: A Study in Mice and Humans.

Int J Mol Sci

February 2023

Department of Anatomy and Anthropology, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv 69978, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • The endocannabinoid system, specifically CB2, plays a complex role in colon cancer, with evidence suggesting it may influence immune responses.
  • In experiments with mice, those lacking CB2 exhibited a higher occurrence of precancerous lesions and increased tumor development, alongside changes in immune cell populations.
  • Analysis of human genomic data indicates a link between specific variants and colon cancer incidence, highlighting the potential for CB2 as a target for cancer prognosis and treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) relapse in patients undergoing haploidentical stem cell transplantation with post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy).
  • The results show a 2-year relapse rate of 49% and leukemia-free survival (LFS) of 32.3%, with no association between GVHD severity and lower relapse rates.
  • Interestingly, grade I acute GVHD was linked to improved LFS, while higher grades of acute GVHD and extensive chronic GVHD increased non-relapse mortality, suggesting that GVHD might not contribute to the graft's effectiveness against leukemia in active AML cases.
