Myocardial Function in Fetuses with Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection.

Introduction: The objective of this study was to investigate myocardial deformation of left (LV) and right ventricle (RV) using 2-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) in fetuses with and without congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection.

Methods: This was a prospective single-center study. Vertical transmission was defined by a positive CMV polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test on the amniotic fluid or on the neonate's urine.

The Use of the Off-the-Shelf Inner Branch E-nside Endograft for the Treatment of Elective and Emergent Complex Aortic Aneurysms-A Single-Center Experience.

Background: The aim of this single-center study was to evaluate the early results of the off-the-shelf inner branch E-nside endograft in the treatment of complex aortic aneurysms and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database of all patients treated with the E-nside endograft at our institution during the years 2021-2023. Parameters evaluated were technical success, early major adverse events, target vessel patency, and the presence of endoleaks.

Pachyvitelliform maculopathy: an optical coherence tomography analysis of a novel entity.

Purpose: To describe the optical coherence tomography features of pachyvitelliform maculopathy (PVM), an acquired vitelliform lesion (AVL) associated with pachychoroid disease.

Methods: This study was a retrospective, multicentre, observational analysis.Medical records and multimodal imaging were reviewed in all patients with pachychoroid disease and AVL.

Availability of haploidentical donors has broadened utilization of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT). Peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) are being used with increased frequency in haploidentical allo-HCT. We evaluated extent of HLA disparity (2-3/8 versus 4/8 HLA antigen mismatches) on post-allograft outcomes when using T-cell replete PBSC from haploidentical donors for acute myeloid leukemia in first complete remission.

Morbidity of Returning Travelers Seen in Community Urgent Care Centers throughout Israel.

Information regarding post-travel morbidity is usually reported via dedicated post-travel clinics and mainly relates to travelers returning from low-middle-income countries (LMIC), however, the spectrum of morbidity seen within the community setting is scarcely reported. This prospective observational study among visitors to 17 community Urgent Care Centers (UCC) was designed to evaluate the reasons for post-travel community clinic visits and to compare travelers returning from LMIC to high-income countries (HIC). All visitors within one-month post-travel to all destinations were included.

Second stage duration and delivery outcomes among women laboring after cesarean with no prior vaginal delivery.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the association of the duration of the second stage with labor after cesarean (LAC) success and other outcomes among women with one prior cesarean delivery (CD) and no prior vaginal births.

Methods: All women undergoing LAC that reached the second stage of labor from March 2011 to March 2020 were included in this retrospective cohort study. The primary outcome was the mode of delivery by second stage duration.

Long-term outdoor recreation program for adults with intellectual disabilities: Feasibility and effects.

Background: While people with intellectual disabilities tend to refrain from physical activity, outdoor physical activity programs increase motivation to engage in physical activity.

Method: Eighty adults with intellectual disabilities participated in a 12-month outdoor physical activity program. Attendance was used to assess feasibility.

Cognitive and Cellular Effects of Combined Organophosphate Toxicity and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is considered the most common neurological disorder among people under the age of 50. In modern combat zones, a combination of TBI and organophosphates (OP) can cause both fatal and long-term effects on the brain. We utilized a mouse closed-head TBI model induced by a weight drop device, along with OP exposure to paraoxon.

Pediatric Contact Dermatitis: A 10-Year Multicenter Retrospective Study.

Although allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is relatively common in the adult and pediatric populations alike, few studies describe the special features of contact sensitization among the Israeli pediatric populations, none of them is multicenter. Our study aims to describe and analyze patch test results and trends in 4 tertiary care centers between 2012 and 2022. We assessed the results of 357 patch tests performed on children 0-18 years old between 2012 and 2022 in designated clinics in 4 tertiary medical centers.

The Anti-Tumorigenic Role of Cannabinoid Receptor 2 in Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer.

Five million non-melanoma skin cancers occur globally each year, and it is one of the most common malignant cancers. The dysregulation of the endocannabinoid system, particularly cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), is implicated in skin cancer development, progression, and metastasis. Comparing wildtype (WT) to systemic CB2 knockout (CB2) mice, we performed a spontaneous cancer study in one-year old mice, and subsequently used the multi-stage chemical carcinogenesis model, wherein cancer is initiated by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) and promoted by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA).

Outcomes of graft failure after umbilical cord blood transplantation in acute leukemia: a study from Eurocord and the Acute Leukemia Working Party of the EBMT.

Graft failure has remained a limitation of umbilical cord blood transplantation (CBT). Here, we assessed the outcomes of patients who experienced graft failure after CBT. Inclusion criteria were patients (age ≥ 18 years) experiencing graft failure after unrelated CBT (single or double) between 2005 and 2016, for acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) or acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), no prior allogeneic or autologous transplantation, no other stem cell product.

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation is a potentially curative treatment in high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Conditioning regimens based on ≥12 Gray total body irradiation (TBI) represent the current standard in patients ≤45 years, whereas elderly patients frequently receive intermediate intensity conditioning (IIC) to reduce toxicity. To evaluate the role of TBI as a backbone of IIC in ALL, a retrospective, registry-based study included patients >45 years transplanted from matched donors in first complete remission, who had received either fludarabine/TBI 8 Gy (FluTBI8, n = 262), or the most popular, irradiation-free alternative fludarabine/busulfan, comprising busulfan 6.

Objective: Evaluation of preeclampsia (PE) incidence among participants undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) after various cycles of sperm donation (SD) via intrauterine inseminations (IUI) or IVF.

Study Design: A retrospective case-control study was conducted at a single tertiary medical center between 2011 and 2019 which included participants who conceived via IVF using SD from a single sperm bank and had a successful singleton birth at Sheba Medical Center. The study cohort was divided into two groups: Group 1 (participants who conceived via IVF after 0-1 cycles of IUI or IVF from the same sperm donor) and Group 2 (participants who conceived via IVF after 2 or more cycles of IUI or IVF from the same sperm donor).

Background: Crohn's disease is considered a contraindication for IPAA. In our prior study, when IPAA was used intentionally for well-defined Crohn's disease, we found a high incidence of recurrent disease with a low incidence of pouch failure.

Objective: This study aimed to replicate these findings in a larger cohort over a longer period.

An Outbreak of Coxsackievirus B Type 2 Acute Meningoencephalitis in Children, Israel, July-September 2022.

During July-September 2022, 14 children suffering from meningoencephalitis tested positive for Coxsackievirus B2 (8 cerebrospinal fluid, 9 stool samples). Mean age 22 months (range 0-60 months); 8 were males. Seven of the children presented with ataxia and 2 had imaging features of rhombencephalitis, not previously described in association with Coxsackievirus B2.

PARIN5, a Novel Thrombin Receptor Antagonist Modulates a Streptozotocin Mice Model for Diabetic Encephalopathy.

Diabetic encephalopathy (DE) is an inflammation-associated diabetes mellitus (DM) complication. Inflammation and coagulation are linked and are both potentially modulated by inhibiting the thrombin cellular protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR1). Our aim was to study whether coagulation pathway modulation affects DE.
