Coagulase-negative staphylococci in Southern Brazil: looking toward its high diversity.

Rev Soc Bras Med Trop

March 2017

Research Group for Host-Microbe Interactions, Department of Medical Biology, Faculty of Health Sciences, UiT-The Artic University of Norway, Tromsø, Norway.

Introduction: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are the most prevalent pathogens in nosocomial infections and may serve as a reservoir of mobile genetic elements such as the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) encoding methicillin resistance. Molecular characterization of SCCmec types combined with advanced molecular typing techniques may provide essential information for understanding the evolution and epidemiology of CoNS infections. We therefore aimed to investigate the SCCmec distribution, multidrug-resistance (MDR), and biofilm formation in CoNS blood culture isolates from a hospital in Southern Brazil.

Context: Autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1 (APS1) is a childhood-onset monogenic disease defined by the presence of two of the three major components: hypoparathyroidism, primary adrenocortical insufficiency, and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC). Information on longitudinal follow-up of APS1 is sparse.

Objective: To describe the phenotypes of APS1 and correlate the clinical features with autoantibody profiles and autoimmune regulator (AIRE) mutations during extended follow-up (1996-2016).

Neuroanatomical correlates of verbal fluency in early Alzheimer's disease and normal aging.

Brain Lang

September 2017

Department of Radiology, University Hospital North Norway, Tromsø, Norway; Medical Imaging Research Group, Department of Clinical Medicine, UiT The Artic University of Norway, Tromsø, Norway.

Verbal fluency (VF) impairments occur early in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and to a lesser extent also in normal aging. However, the neural underpinnings of these impairments are not fully understood. The present study evaluated whether VF impairments in early AD and normal aging rely upon common or different neuroanatomical correlates.

Objective: A number of observational studies have shown an inverse association between circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D and total mortality, but a reverse J-shaped association has also been reported. In a large nested case-control study, serum-25-hydroxyvitamin D (s-25(OH)D) was positively associated with incident prostate cancer. Based on the same study population, the primary aim of the present study was to investigate the association between s-25(OH)D and total mortality.

Physical activity and risk of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in a prospective cohort study.

Eur J Epidemiol

March 2016

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Imperial College London, St. Mary's Campus - Norfolk Place, W2 1PG, London, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous case-control studies indicated a potential link between physical activity (PA) and an increased risk of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), but this has not been explored in larger, prospective cohort studies.
  • In a study analyzing 472,100 individuals, 219 deaths from ALS were recorded, with data gathered on PA through standardized questionnaires, revealing a weak inverse relationship: those with high PA levels had a 33% lower risk of dying from ALS.
  • The findings suggest that higher physical activity might slightly decrease the risk of ALS mortality, contrasting with previous studies, and this relationship was not influenced by factors like age, gender, or body measurements.

Staphylococcus aureus is known as a frequent colonizer of the skin and mucosa. Among bacterial factors involved in colonization are adhesins such as the microbial surface components recognizing adhesive matrix molecules (MSCRAMMs). Serine aspartate repeat containing protein D (SdrD) is involved in adhesion to human squamous cells isolated from the nose.

Residual Associations of Inflammatory Markers with eGFR after Accounting for Measured GFR in a Community-Based Cohort without CKD.

Clin J Am Soc Nephrol

February 2016

Section of Nephrology, University Hospital of North Norway, Tromsø, Norway; Department of Clinical Medicine, Metabolic and Renal Research Group, The Artic University of Norway, Tromsø, Norway; and.

Background And Objectives: eGFR on the basis of creatinine (eGFRcre) associates differently with cardiovascular disease and mortality than eGFR on the basis of cystatin C (eGFRcys). This may be related to risk factors affecting the level of creatinine and cystatin C along non-GFR pathways, which may confound the association between eGFR and outcome. Nontraditional risk factors are usually not measured in epidemiologic studies of eGFR and cannot be adjusted for to reduce confounding.

Acrylamide, classified in 1994 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as "probably carcinogenic" to humans, was discovered in 2002 in some heat-treated, carbohydrate-rich foods. The association between dietary acrylamide intake and epithelial ovarian cancer risk (EOC) has been previously studied in one case-control and three prospective cohort studies which obtained inconsistent results and could not further examine histologic subtypes other than serous EOC. The present study was carried out in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) subcohort of women (n = 325,006).
