Background: Autologous fat injection in facial reconstruction is a common cosmetic surgery. Although cerebral fat embolism (CFE) as a complication is rare, it carries serious health risks.
Case Summary: We present a case of a 29-year-old female patient who developed acute CFE following facial fat filling surgery.

Although lactate supplementation at the reperfusion stage of ischemic stroke has been shown to offer neuroprotection, whether the role of accumulated lactate at the ischemia phase is neuroprotection or not remains largely unknown. Thus, in this study, we aimed to investigate the roles and mechanisms of accumulated brain lactate at the ischemia stage in regulating brain injury of ischemic stroke. Pharmacological inhibition of lactate production by either inhibiting LDHA or glycolysis markedly attenuated the mouse brain injury of ischemic stroke.

Vascular dementia (VaD) causes progressive cognitive decline in the elderly population, but there is short of available therapeutic measures. Microglia-mediated neuroinflammation is vigorously involved in the pathogenesis of VaD, but the traditional classification of microglial M1/M2 phenotypes remains restrictive and controversial. This study aims to investigate whether microglia transform into novel subtypes in VaD.

Background: The pattern of olfactory identification change in the early phases of dementing disorders is unclear. We aimed to assess olfactory identification trajectories preceding incident mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia and explore the role of brain pathologies in these trajectories.
Methods: Within the Rush Memory and Aging Project, 1318 dementia-free older adults were followed annually for up to 11 years.

White matter lesions (WMLs) resulting from chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) are the leading cause of vascular dementia (VaD). This study aimed to investigate whether dipyridamole could alleviate WMLs by regulating the phenotype of disease-associated microglia (DAM) through equilibrative nucleoside transporter 2 (ENT2) and adenosine A2A receptor (Adora2a) and to clarify the underlying molecular mechanisms. CCH rat models were constructed to mimic VaD.

Neuroinflammation is assumed as the critical pathophysiologic mechanism of white matter lesions (WMLs), and infiltrated peripheral monocyte-derived macrophages are implicated in the development of neuroinflammation. This study sought to explore the blood molecules that promote the migration of peripheral monocytes to the sites of WMLs. The serum protein expression profiles of patients and Sprague-Dawley rat models with WMLs were detected by data-independent acquisition (DIA) proteomics technique.

Cerebral ischemia, resulting from compromised blood flow, is one of the leading causes of death worldwide with limited therapeutic options. Potential deleterious injuries resulting from reperfusion therapies remain a clinical challenge for physicians. This study aimed to explore the metabolomic alterations during ischemia-reperfusion injury by employing metabolomic analysis coupled with gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS) and ultraperformance liquid chromatography quadrupole (UPLC/Q)-TOF-MS.

Recent publications regarding the role of mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) in various metabolic and degenerative disorders suggest that MANF is both a marker of disease and a possible therapeutic agent. We investigate the role of plasma MANF levels in patients in intensive care units (ICUs) receiving voriconazole (VCZ) therapy while also comparing MANF levels in healthy individuals. A single-center prospective study was conducted.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity contributes to cardiovascular health by its energy-dissipating capacity but how BAT modulates vascular function and atherosclerosis through endocrine mechanisms remains poorly understood. Here we show that BAT-derived neuregulin-4 (Nrg4) ameliorates atherosclerosis in mice. BAT-specific Nrg4 deficiency accelerates vascular inflammation and adhesion responses, endothelial dysfunction and apoptosis and atherosclerosis in male mice.

The contribution of histone mark redistribution to the age-induced decline of endogenous neuroprotection remains unclear. In this study, we used an intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH)-induced acute brain injury rat model to study the transcriptional and chromatin responses in 13- and 22-month-old rats. Transcriptome analysis (RNA-seq) revealed that the expression of neuroinflammation-associated genes was systematically upregulated in ICH rat brains, irrespective of age.

Reactive astrocytes undergo morphological, molecular, metabolic, and functional remodeling in response to central nervous system (CNS) damage. However, we still know very little about how the metabolic switching of astrocytes influences, or is influenced by, reactive astrocytes in response to neurological diseases. In this review, we initially cover a brief introduction into reactive astrocyte function under pathological conditions.

Background: Mitochondria have been shown to play vital roles during severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) development. Currently, it is unclear whether mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variants, which define mtDNA haplogroups and determine oxidative phosphorylation performance and reactive oxygen species production, are associated with COVID-19 risk.
Methods: A population-based case-control study was conducted to compare the distribution of mtDNA variations defining mtDNA haplogroups between healthy controls (n = 615) and COVID-19 patients (n = 536).

Neurons in the penumbra (the area surrounding ischemic tissue that consists of still viable tissue but with reduced blood flow and oxygen transport) may be rescued following stroke if adequate perfusion is restored in time. It has been speculated that post-stroke angiogenesis in the penumbra can reduce damage caused by ischemia. However, the mechanism for neovasculature formation in the brain remains unclear and vascular-targeted therapies for brain ischemia remain suboptimal.

Background: Conditional deletion of Pten in corticospinal neurons promotes axon sprouting and regeneration after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, regeneration studies targeted on PTEN inhibition seldom show motor function recovery. The promotion of functional recovery can be improved by rehabilitative training under a use-dependent plasticity mechanism.

Oxylipins are a series of bioactive lipid metabolites derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids that are involved in cerebral homeostasis and the development of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). However, comprehensive quantification of the oxylipin profile in ICH remains unknown. Therefore, an ICH mouse model was constructed and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was then performed to quantify the change in oxylipins in ICH.

Circulating factors associated with aging have been shown to be involved in the development of age-related chronic and acute brain diseases. Here, we aimed to investigate the roles and mechanisms of CCL12, a circulating factor that is highly expressed in the plasma of aged rodents after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) using parabiosis and ICH models. Neurological deficit score (NDS), mortality rate, brain water content (BWC), and levels of inflammatory factors were determined to assess the degree of ICH-induced brain injury.

Cerebral hemorrhage is a serious complication of intracranial artery stenting that could be fatal without timely identification and treatment. Prompt brain CT scan would help to evaluate whether cerebral hemorrhage occurs, however, the diverse features of the CT scan immediately after stenting could influence the judgement sometimes. Therefore, we analyzed and summarized these features to help to determine the clinical significance of these CT features.
