The impact of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), the preferred nomenclature for NAFLD, on cardiovascular health and mortality among older adults is uncertain. As such, we aimed to identify whether MASLD increases the risk of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events (MACE) (a composite of fatal coronary heart disease [excluding heart failure], nonfatal myocardial infarction, or fatal or nonfatal ischemic stroke), Atrial Fibrillation (AF), or all-cause mortality in older adults, and whether aspirin attenuates these risks in individuals with MASLD. This is a non-prespecified post-hoc analysis of the ASPREE (ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly) randomized trial.

Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography (PET) is widely used in prostate cancer. Recent studies indicate hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) demonstrates PSMA PET uptake. The diagnostic accuracy of PSMA PET for HCC is not known.

Objective: This paper presents a preclinical feasibility study to investigate the efficacy of a game-based virtual reality (VR) intervention in the functional training of upper-limb prosthesis use.
Methods: The study compared the skill of 2 able-bodied groups (intervention and control, 5 participants in each group) using a surface electromyography controlled self-experience prosthetic hand and wrist through the Box and Blocks Test (BBT). The Intervention Group followed the game-based VR intervention for 4 weeks and underwent real-life (RL) BBT assessments before and after the intervention using the self-experience prosthesis.

To reduce antimicrobial resistance (AMR), pathogen-specific AMR burden data are crucial to guide target selection for research and development of vaccines and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). We identified knowledge gaps through previously conducted systematic reviews, which informed a Delphi expert consultation on future AMR research priorities and harmonisation strategies to support data-driven decision-making. Consensus (≥80% agreement) on importance and feasibility of research topics was achieved in two rounds, involving 24 of 39 and 19 of 24 invited experts, respectively.

Bacteria are typically isolated on rich media to maximise isolation success, removing them from their native evolutionary context. This eliminates selection pressures, enabling otherwise deleterious genomic events to accumulate. Here, we present a cautionary tale of these 'quiet mutations' which can persist unnoticed in bacterial culture lines.

Background: Advances in instrumented mouthguards (iMGs) allow for accurate quantification of single high-acceleration head impacts and cumulative head acceleration exposure in collision sports. However, relationships between these measures and risk of brain cell injury remain unclear.
Aim: The purpose of this study was to quantify measures of non-concussive head impact exposure and assess their association with blood glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), neurofilament light (NfL) and phosphorylated-tau-181 (p-tau-181) levels in male Australian football players.

Background: In Europe, approximately 291,000 cardiac arrests occur annually. Despite critical care therapy, hospital mortality remains high. This systematic review assessed whether, in comatose survivors of cardiac arrest, any drug therapy, compared to placebo or usual care, improves outcomes.

Background: Advanced lung diseases are prevalent in women, yet are underrecognized and under-treated due to differing epidemiology and pathophysiology.
Aim: To investigate any gender differences in access to palliative care and end-of-life management for patients with advanced lung diseases.
Methods: A post-hoc analysis was conducted using three datasets that included information regarding the provision of palliative care to patients with advanced lung diseases - chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), fibrotic interstitial lung diseases (f-ILD) or non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in tertiary and regional hospitals in Victoria, Australia, from 2004 to 2019.

Background: The relationship between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and multiple sclerosis (MS) relapse and disease progression remains unclear. Previous studies are limited by small sample sizes and most lack a propensity-matched control cohort.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of COVID-19 infection on MS disease course with a large propensity-matched cohort.

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) are an important threat to the health of solid organ transplant recipients (SOTr); data comparing outcomes of SOTr with CRE to non-SOTr with CRE are lacking. A matched cohort study was performed within 2 prospective, multicenter, cohort studies (Consortium on Resistance Against Carbapenems in Klebsiella and other Enterobacterales and Consortium on Resistance Against Carbapenems in Klebsiella and other Enterobacterales 2). The epidemiology, desirability of outcome rankings outcomes, and mortality of SOTr and non-SOTr hospitalized in the United States (December 2011-August 2017) with clinical isolates with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-defined CRE were compared.

Background: Concizumab is an anti-tissue factor pathway inhibitor monoclonal antibody in development as a once-daily, subcutaneous prophylaxis for patients with haemophilia A or haemophilia B with or without inhibitors. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of concizumab in patients with haemophilia A or B without inhibitors. Here we report the results from the confirmatory analysis cutoff.

Background: The resuscitation of trauma patients with critical bleeding may follow a formulaic approach using high ratios of blood components or a viscoelastic haemostatic assay (VHA) guided approach. The aim of this study was to compare the two strategies for resuscitation of shocked trauma patients.
Methods: This was a registry-based cohort study including shocked trauma patients from two trauma centres-one practising a formulaic approach, with VHA unavailable during trauma resuscitation and the other practicing a VHA-guided resuscitation strategy.

Athletes are predisposed to atrial arrhythmias but the association between intense endurance exercise training, ventricular arrhythmias (VAs), and sudden cardiac death is less well established. Thus, it is unclear whether the 'athlete's heart' promotes specific arrhythmias or whether it represents a more general pro-arrhythmogenic phenotype. Whilst direct causality has not been established, it appears possible that repeated exposure to high-intensity endurance exercise in some athletes contributes to formation of pro-arrhythmic cardiac phenotypes that underlie VAs.

Background: Individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) have a heightened risk of epilepsy. However, the underlying mechanisms are not well-understood.
Objective: We aimed to elucidate the role of the glutamate-glutamine cycle in this mechanism and test the effect of ceftriaxone, a glutamate transporter-1 (GLT-1) enhancer, on seizure susceptibility in the Tg2576 mouse model of AD.
