Introduction: Osthole (Ost) is a coumarin compound that strengthens hippocampal neurons and neural stem cells against Aβ oligomer-induced neurotoxicity in mice, and is a potential drug for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the effectiveness of the drug is limited by its solubility and bioavailability, as well as by the low permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). In this study, a kind of transferrin-modified Ost liposomes (Tf-Ost-Lip) was constructed, which could improve the bioavailability and enhance brain targeting.

Purpose: C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) and integrin αvβ6 play important roles in the malignant progression of multiple cancers. However, it remains unclear whether the expression of one or both proteins in breast cancer (BC) is of clinical significance. In this study, we investigated the expression of CXCR4 and integrin αvβ6 in BC tissues and their correlation with clinicopathological characteristics, including survival.

Cabozantinib has been shown to have potent anti-ROS1 activity in many solid malignancies, particularly against those with solvent-front resistance mutations following crizotinib therapy. With regard to the most common fusion, the efficacy of cabozantinib has only been demonstrated in vitro. Therefore, we evaluate the efficacy of cabozantinib in a patient with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring a fusion in the present study.

MTA1, SOX4, EZH2, and TGF-β are all potent inducers of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in cancer; however, the signaling relationship among these molecules in EMT is poorly understood. Here, we investigated the function of MTA1 in cancer cells and demonstrated that MTA1 overexpression efficiently activates EMT. This activation resulted in a significant increase in the migratory and invasive properties of three different cancer cell lines through a common mechanism involving SOX4 activation, screened from a gene expression profiling analysis.

The main event in the progression of pulmonary fibrosis is the appearance of myofibroblasts. Recent evidence supports pericytes as a major source of myofibroblasts. TGFβ/Smad2/3 and PDGF/Erk signaling pathways are important for regulating pericyte activation.

The cardiotoxicity of doxorubicin (DOX) limits its clinical use in the treatment of a variety of solid tumors and malignant hematologic disease. However, the mechanism by which it causes cardiotoxicity is not fully understood. Apoptosis has been regarded as one of mechanisms underlying the cardiotoxic effects of DOX.

Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) on patella alignment.

Methods: The radiographic data of all the patients who met the inclusion criteria from January 2015 to July 2017 were reviewed, including the quadriceps angle (QA), patellar lateral tilt (PTA), sulcus angle (SA), lateral shift of patella (LSP), and lower limbs alignment. The patients were divided into three groups in accordance with lateral center-edge angle (LCE) and femoral neck torsion angle (FNTA): group A (LCE > 25° and FNTA < 40°), group B (LCE < 20° and FNTA < 40°), and group C (LCE < 20° and FNTA > 40°).

Serum and tissue proteomic signatures of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma using 2‑D gel electrophoresis.

Mol Med Rep

August 2019

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Zhongshan Hospital, Xiamen University, Xiamen, Fujian 361004, P.R. China.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounts for ~85% of primary liver cancer cases and is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. Effective early diagnosis is difficult for HCC; however, effective biomarkers may be beneficial for diagnosis. In the current study, serum samples, and HCC and adjacent tissue samples were obtained from patients with HCC for the detection of biomarkers using 2‑D gel electrophoresis (2‑DE) and matrix‑assisted laser desorption/ionization‑time of flight (TOF)/TOF mass spectrometry.

Purpose: To investigate whether circ-100219 could promote the proliferation and migration of breast cancer cells by upregulating NTRK3 after binding to microRNA-485-3p, thus participating in the development of breast cancer.

Methods: Breast cancer cell lines MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, MDA-MB-549 and human mammary epithelial cells were cultured. The expression levels of circ-100219, microRNA-485-3p and NTRK3 in breast cancer and paracancer tissues were determined using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR).

Our study determined the toxic effects of zinc oxide (ZnO) particles with different diameters on dopaminergic (DA) neurons, the role of ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1) for ZnO particles-induced neurotoxicity, and corresponding molecular mechanisms. We constructed an in vitro cell injury model for DA neurons to analyze the cytotoxicity of ZnO particles using SH-SY5Y cells. Following cell viability assays and flow cytometry, we found that the cytotoxicity of ZnO particles was affected by particle size, time, and dose of exposure.

CD1d highly expressed on DCs reduces lung tumor burden by enhancing antitumor immunity.

Oncol Rep

May 2019

Department of Immunology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, and Key Laboratory of Medical Epigenetics and Metabolism, Institutes of Biomedical Sciences, Fudan University, Shanghai 200032, P.R. China.

Dendritic cells (DCs), as professional antigen‑presenting cells are essential for the initial activation of adaptive antitumor immunity. CD1d is considered to present phospholipid and glycosphingolipid antigens to NKT cells. However, it is currently unknown whether CD1d expression on DCs is capable of enhancing antitumor immunity, particularly T‑cell related immunity.

Tumor endothelial cell-derived cadherin-2 promotes angiogenesis and has prognostic significance for lung adenocarcinoma.

Mol Cancer

March 2019

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, The Affiliated Zhongshan Hospital, Xiamen University, Xiamen, 361004, Fujian, China.

In lung cancer, antiangiogenic strategies targeting tumor-derived endothelial cells (TECs) afford a survival advantage, but the characteristics of TECs have not been comprehensively elucidated. Herein, high-purity (> 98%) TECs were obtained, and these cells retained expression of EC markers and exhibited high viability. ITRAQ-2DLC-MS/MS was performed to profile the proteome and the heterogeneity of ECs.
