Purpose: To outline a management principle for the combined atlas (C1)-axis (C2) fractures and assess its therapeutic effects.
Methods: Forty-one patients with combined C1-C2 fractures were treated according to their C2 fracture types. Non-operative external immobilization in the form of a cervical collar or halo vest was used in 22 patients.

Autophagy, which is a mechanism for the turnover of intracellular molecules and organelles, protects cells during stress responses; however, the role of autophagy in the stages of bone fracture remains to be elucidated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the process of autophagy in bone tissue at different time-points after fracture. A femur fracture model was established in male adult Wistar rats via surgery.

Autophagy is a crucial mediating process for normal bone cell function and metabolism in physiology or pathology. Rapamycin has been demonstrated to induce the autophagy pathway by inhibiting the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway. However, the contribution of autophagy in orthopedic diseases is rarely reported.

Summary: Osteocyte is the orchestrator of bone remolding and decline in osteocyte autophagy is involved in senile osteoporosis. Our results suggested that rapamycin, at least in part by activating osteocyte autophagy, reduced the severity of age-related bone changes in trabecular bone of old male rats.
Introduction: Previous literatures have showed that osteocyte is the orchestrator of bone remolding and age-related decline in osteocyte number is associated with senile osteoporosis.

Soft tissue defects of the pretibial area and the foot are among the most common complications in patients with lower extremity injuries and remain a challenge for surgeons. This study examined the clinical effects of repairing pretibial and foot soft tissue defects with a medial crural fasciocutaneous flap. Twenty-three injury cases with soft tissue defects in the middle/lower parts of the tibia and ankle/heel were treated.

Background: The neglected femoral neck fracture is one where there has been a delay of more than 30 days to seek medical help from the time of the original injury. Salvage procedures, such as osteotomy and other treatment options such as vascularized and nonvascularized bone grafts have high failure rates and arthroplasty procedures are not ideal, given the patient's young age and higher levels of activity. We designed a hollow bone graft dynamic hip screw (Hb-DHS) (modified DHS, Hb-DHS) for use in neglected femoral neck fractures.

Targeting epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) represents a promising therapeutic strategy for non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). The ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) is a major pathway that mediates protein degradation. To target the degradation of EGFR, we generated two artificial ubiquitin ligases, which are composed of an EGFR-binding domain, i.

Retro-odontoid cysts associated with chronic atlantoaxial subluxation are extremely rare. This article describes a case of retro-odontoid cystic mass associated with chronic atlantoaxial subluxation and its management with posterior C1 and partial C2 laminectomy and C1-C2 pedicle screw fixation without resection of the retro-odontoid cyst. A 64-year-old woman experienced a sudden onset of neck pain, hand and foot paresthesia.

Mitomycin C is one of the most effective chemotherapeutic agents for a wide spectrum of cancers, but its clinical use is still hindered by the mitomycin C (MMC) delivery systems. In this study, the MMC-loaded polymer-lipid hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by a single-step assembly (ACS Nano 2012, 6:4955 to 4965) of MMC-soybean phosphatidyhlcholine (SPC) complex (Mol. Pharmaceutics 2013, 10:90 to 101) and biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) polymers for intravenous MMC delivery.

Recently, a member of the voltage-dependent potassium channel (Kv) family, the Ether à go-go 1 (Eag1) channel was found to be necessary for cell proliferation, cycle progression and tumorigenesis. However, the therapeutic potential of the Eag1 channel in osteosarcoma remains elusive. In the present study, a recombinant adenovirus harboring shRNA against Eag1 was constructed to silence Eag1 expression in human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells.

Background: Children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) can suffer from frequent fractures and limb deformities, resulting in impaired ambulation. Osteopenia and thin cortices complicate orthopedic treatment in this group. This study evaluates the clinical results of a bone splint technique for the treatment of lower limb deformities in children with type I OI.

Aberrant expression of MicroRNAs (miRNAs) has been implicated in several types of cancer. As a direct target gene of p53, miR-34a has been suggested to mediate the tumor suppressor function of p53. Ether à go-go 1 (Eag1) channel is overexpressed in a variety of cancers and plays important roles in cancer progression.

The optimal surgical approach for cervical disk disease remains a matter of debate, especially for multilevel disease. The purpose of this study was to compare the results of 2 surgical strategies for cervical disk disease involving 3 levels: hybrid constructs, artificial disk replacement combined with midlevel anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion (ACDF), and 3-level ACDF. The authors prospectively compared patients who had cervical disk disease involving 3 levels that was treated with hybrid constructs or with 3-level ACDF.

Ether à go-go 1 (Eag1) channel is overexpressed in a variety of cancers but the therapeutic potential of Eag1 in osteosarcoma remains elusive. In this study, we constructed an Ad5-Eag1-shRNA vector and evaluated its efficiency for Eag1 knockdown and its effects on osteosarcoma. Our results showed that Ad5-Eag1-shRNA had high interference efficiency of Eag1 expression and suppressed osteosarcoma growth both in vitro and in vivo.
