No FDA approved pharmacological therapy is available that would reduce cell death following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Dexmedetomidine (Dex) is a highly selective agonist of alpha-2 adrenergic receptors and has demonstrated neuroprotective effects in hippocampal slice cultures undergoing direct impact. However, no one has tested whether Dex, in addition to its sedative action, has neuroprotective effects in an animal model of TBI.

Department of Orthopaedics, The 175th Hospital of PLA, the Affiliated Southeast Hospital of Xiamen University, Orthopaedic Center of People's Liberation Army, No. 279 Zhanghua Road, Zhangzhou, 363000, Fujian, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares two surgical approaches, the Wiltse's paraspinal approach and open book laminectomy, for treating patients with thoracolumbar burst fractures and greenstick lamina fractures, focusing on their efficacy and outcomes over 27.4 months of follow-up.
  • Both surgical methods were effective in improving patient outcomes, such as anterior segmental height and pain scores, but the Wiltse's approach resulted in shorter surgery times, less blood loss, and shorter hospital stays.
  • Although both techniques showed positive results, there were complications noted, including some neurological deficits and dural tears, underscoring the importance of careful monitoring and selection of surgical approaches.

Unstable external-rotation type ankle fractures with concomitant syndesmosis injury commonly occur. Syndesmosis screw fixation has long been regarded as a reference standard treatment for syndesmosis injury. However, its complications and biomechanical disadvantages have become controversial; thus, we designed a novel elastic syndesmosis hook plate (ESHP) that combines the features of both rigidity and flexibility.

Our previous work has demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) could induce metastatic growth of the inflammation-related cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). However, the functional mechanism of MSCs on CCA progression in the early inflammatory microenvironment remained undetermined. Here, we showed that TNF-α and IFN-γ-induced inflammatory microenvironment stimulated the expression of TNF-α, CCL5, IL-6, IDO, and activated the NF-κB signaling with p65 nuclear translocation in MSCs cells.

Necrostatin-1 Mitigates Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress After Spinal Cord Injury.

Neurochem Res

December 2017

Department of Orthopaedics, The Affiliated Southeast Hospital of Xiamen University, Orthopaedic Center of People's Liberation Army, Zhangzhou, 363000, China.

Necrostatin-1 (Nec-1) has been shown to inhibit necroptosis and convey a significant protective effect after spinal cord injury (SCI). This small molecule inhibitor may reduce tissue damage and restore neurological function by lessening mitochondrial injury after SCI and preserving energy homeostasis. However, the effects of Nec-1 on endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS)-an important pathological consequence of SCI-are still not clear.

Distal tibiofibular syndesmosis (DTS) has wide anatomic variability in depth of incisura fibularis and shape of tibial tubercles. We designed a 3-year prospective cohort study of 300 young physical training soldiers in an Army Physical Fitness School. Ankle computed tomography (CT) scans showed that 56% of the incisura fibularis were a "C" shape, 25% were a "1" shape, and 19% were a "Г" shape.

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, The Affiliated Southeast Hospital of Xiamen University, Zhangzhou, China; Experimental Surgery and Regenerative Medicine, Department of Surgery, Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, Germany. Electronic address:

Introduction: Management of Pauwels type-3 vertical femoral neck fractures has been a challenging clinical problem as they experience high shear forces and thus a greater risk of treatment failure. There is no apparent consensus on the optimal implant type for these injuries. We developed a modified dynamic hip screw (DHS), which was designed to a cage in the lag screw, loaded with autologous bone graft for the treatment of Pauwels type-3 vertical femoral neck fractures.

Abnormal expression and function of retinoic acid receptor α (RARα) have been reported to be associated with various cancers including acute promyelocytic leukemia and hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the role and the mechanism of RARα in gastric carcinoma (GC) were unknown. Here, the expression of RARα was frequently elevated in human GC tissues and cell lines, and its overexpression was closely correlated with tumor size, lymph node metastasis and clinical stages in GC patients.

To explore the expression of ether à go-go 1 (Eag1) in human osteosarcoma and its molecular mechanisms of regulating the malignant phenotype of osteosarcoma. The expression levels of Eag1 in osteosarcoma cell lines and human osteosarcoma tissues were detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry. The small interfering RNA (siRNA) was used to inhibit the expression of Eag1.

Recently, the human ether à go-go (eag) related gene 1 (hERG1) channel, a member of the voltage-dependent potassium channel (Kv) family, was determined to have a critical role in cancer cell proliferation, invasion, tumorigenesis and apoptosis. However, the expression levels and functions of hERG1 in osteosarcoma cells remain poorly characterized. In this study, hERG1 transcript and protein levels in osteosarcoma cells and tissues were measured using semi-quantitative real time PCR (RT-PCR), Western blot, and immunohistochemistry.
