Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major chronic disease worldwide and its risk factors have long been investigating in epidemiological studies. Our study aims to develop a body composition-based risk score and integrate it into the Framingham Risk Score (FRS) to improve CVD prediction among well-functioning older adults. We included 1882 older adults from the Health, Aging and Body Composition (Health ABC) study to screen body composition variables obtained from the Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the relationship between frailty (physical weakness) and self-rated health (SRH) in older adults, focusing on how these factors relate to mortality risks.
  • Data was collected from over 5,300 adults aged 60 and above in China to analyze both frailty levels and health perceptions.
  • Findings showed that while frailty increases mortality risk, those who report poor health are also significantly at risk, and the combination of frailty and poor SRH can be crucial in understanding overall health outcomes.

Background: Skeletal muscle mass and quality assessed by computed tomography (CT) images of the third lumbar vertebra (L3) level have been established as risk factors for poor clinical outcomes in several illnesses, but the relevance for dialysis patients is unclear. A few studies have suggested a correlation between CT-determined skeletal muscle mass and quality at the first lumbar vertebra (L1) level and adverse outcomes. Generally, chest CT does not reach beyond L1.

Targeting HNRNPA2B1 inhibits enterovirus 71 replication in SK-N-SH cells.

Virus Res

October 2023

Department of Laboratory Medicine, the Affiliated Guangji Hospital of Soochow University, Suzhou Mental Health Center, Suzhou, Jiangsu 215137, China.

Objective: To investigate the effect of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A2B1 (HNRNPA2B1) on the replication of enterovirus 71 (EV-71) in SK-N-SH cells.

Methods: The mRNA and protein expression of HNRNPA2B1 in SK-N-SH cells were detected by real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) and western blotting (WB), respectively. WB was used to detect HNRNPA2B1 protein expression in the nucleus and cytosol.

Objectives: Racial and ethnic disparities in disability in activities of daily living (ADL) continue to be a public concern. We evaluated whether the polysocial score approach could provide a more comprehensive method for modifying racial and ethnic differences in such disability.

Study Design: Cohort study.

Background: Informal caregivers of older adults with dementia may experience substantial burdens during their caregiving process, especially when caring for older adults with other comorbid conditions. This study evaluated whether and how comorbidity burden for persons with dementia (PWD) was associated with caregivers' physical, psychological, social, and financial burden as well as caregiving gain.

Methods: Data were from 1,065 community-dwelling older adults living with dementia and their primary caregivers in the National Health and Aging Trends Study and the National Study of Caregiving.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate and project the trend in long-term care (LTC) costs for home and community-based services as a percentage of gross domestic product in China between 2005 and 2050.

Design: Longitudinal.

Setting And Participants: We used 61,249 observations from 37,702 adults age ≥65 years from waves 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2018 of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Surveys.

Objective: To explore the clinical value of inferior vena cava diameter (IVCD) detection in guiding early fluid resuscitation in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI).

Methods: Eighty patients with sTBI admitted to our hospital from October 2018 to October 2021 were retrospectively enrolled and divided into an observation group (n=40) and control group (n=40) according to the different monitoring methods used for treatment. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lactate level, coagulation function, neurological function, and functional impairment, organ, cognitive, living ability and physical condition, Glasgow score, and adverse reactions in two groups were compared.

Lung cancer is still the leading cause of morbidity and mortality by cancer among men, according to the latest epidemiological data in China. Anaplastic lymphoma kinase () rearrangements act as key oncogenic drivers of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and have been identified in 5-6% of NSCLC. Although ALK inhibitors (ALK-TKIs) were proven to be more effective than chemotherapy in ALK-positive NSCLC patients and the safety profile of these drugs was favorable, novel ALK fusions NSCLC might discontinue or switch treatment because of adverse events (AEs) have rarely previously been reported.

Ergosterol Attenuates Isoproterenol-Induced Myocardial Cardiotoxicity.

Cardiovasc Toxicol

October 2020

Xiamen Cardiovascular Hospital, Xiamen University, Xiamen, 361004, China.

Phytomedicine has shown a promising potential for the prevention of cardiovascular system diseases and disorders. This study aimed to evaluate protective effect of ergosterol (ER) on isoproterenol (ISO)-induced myocardial cardiotoxicity. We found that pretreatment with ER significantly decreased levels of myocardial CK-MB and LDH, and alleviated myocardial damage induced by ISO in rat model.

TRIB3 promotes lung cancer progression by activating β-catenin signaling.

Eur J Pharmacol

November 2019

Department of Radiotherapy & Oncology, The Affiliated Kunshan Hospital of Jiangsu University, Kunsan, 215300, Jiangsu Province, China. Electronic address:

TRIB3 roles in tumor progression have been revealed with similar or opposite results. Here, we found that TRIB3 expression was highly expressed in lung cancer tissues and correlated with tumor grades and metastasis. Functional experiments showed that TRIB3 knockdown (KD) inhibited lung cancer cell migration, invasion, EMT (epithelial-mesenchymal transition) process and stemness.

The TIR/BB-loop mimetic AS-1 prevents non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and hepatic insulin resistance by inhibiting NLRP3-ASC inflammasome activation.

Br J Pharmacol

June 2017

Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Disease and Molecular Intervention, Department of Pathophysiology, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.

Background And Purpose: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is characterized by excessive intracellular lipid accumulation, inflammation and hepatic insulin resistance. As the incidence of NASH is increasing worldwide, there is an urgent need to find novel interventional approaches. The pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β, generated and released from Kupffer cells, is considered to initiate the development of NASH.

It has been demonstrated that nephrin inactivation plays a critical role in Angiotensin II (AngII)-induced podocyte damage both in in vitro and in vivo, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are still unclear. Recently, c-maf inducing protein (c-mip) has been identified as a key component in the molecular pathogenesis of acquired podocyte diseases. In this study, the role of c-mip on AngII-induced nephrin inactivation and podocyte damage was explored in a mouse podocyte cell line.

TGF-β1 plays an important role on podocyte injury and glomerular diseases, while the underlying molecular mechanisms are still elusive. Here, the potential role of the ion channel TRPC6 and the proximal signaling was explored in TGF-β1-treated mouse podocyte. Our results showed that TGF-β1 significantly increased podocyte apoptosis and induced obvious disorganization of actin filaments in a time-dependent pattern.
