Breast cancer is currently the most common malignancy affecting women worldwide. It had been shown that the allopregnanolone biosynthesis was associated with tumorigenesis and PK11195, the Translocator Protein 18 KDa (TSPO) antagonist, had the effects of the allopregnanolone biosynthesis. However, little is known about the association between the effects of PK11195 on the breast cancer and the allopregnanolone biosynthesis.

Forkhead box F1 (FOXF1), a member of the forkhead transcription factor superfamily, plays critical roles in the progression of certain types of cancers. However, the expression and function of FOXF1 in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are still unclear. Quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry detected the relatively lower expression status of FOXF1 in HCC cases.

Metastatic temporal bone tumors are rare, and tend to be asymptomatic. The clinical symptoms consist of aural discharge, bleeding, hearing loss and facial nerve paresis. The most common origin of the metastasis is breast cancer, and other sites of the primary tumor include the thyroid gland, brain, lungs, prostate and blood.

SPP2 Mutations Cause Autosomal Dominant Retinitis Pigmentosa.

Sci Rep

October 2015

Department of Ophthalmology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University and State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing 210029, China.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) shows progressive loss of photoreceptors involved with heterogeneous genetic background. Here, by exome sequencing and linkage analysis on a Chinese family with autosomal dominant RP, we identified a putative pathogenic variant, p.Gly97Arg, in the gene SPP2, of which expression was detected in multiple tissues including retina.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the interleukin 2 receptor alpha (IL2RA) gene have been suggested to be associated with type 1 diabetes (T1D) susceptibility. However, the results from individual studies are inconsistent. To explore the association of IL2RA polymorphisms with T1D, including rs11594656, rs2104286, rs3118470, rs41295061 and rs706778, a meta-analysis involving 10 independent studies with 19 outcomes was conducted: five studies with a total of 10,572 cases and 12,956 controls were analysed for rs11594656 with T1D risk, three studies with 7300 cases and 8331 controls for rs2104286, three studies with 3880 cases and 5409 controls for rs3118470, five studies with 11,253 cases and 13,834 controls for rs41295061 and three studies with 1896 cases and 1709 controls for rs706778 respectively.

The surgical treatment of large malignant thymomas of the anterior mediastinum is associated with a high risk. Recently, a patient with a large malignant thymoma of the anterior mediastinum was treated with surgery, and the outcome is satisfactory. The diagnosis of such tumors is mostly based on the chest X-ray and CT scans, as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Aims And Objective: Wogonin has multiple pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory effects. Here, we hypothesize that wogonin can protect intestinal barrier function in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced Caco-2 cells, which is an in vitro model of intestinal inflammation.

Methods: We measured intestinal barrier function in LPS-induced Caco-2 cells by using transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and transport of fluorescent markers.

We examined the relationship between the liver X receptor α gene (LXRα) polymorphism and the susceptibility to stroke. We utilized the single fluorescent-labeled probe technique to detect the genotype of rs12221497 in the LXRα gene in 400 stroke patients and 400 healthy control subjects. The difference in genotype distribution between the 2 groups was analyzed using the chi-square test.

Department of Hematology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Jiangsu Province Hospital, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China.

Introduction: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a severe hyperinflammatory condition caused by activated T cells and macrophages. Adenosine deaminase (ADA) plays an important role in immune regulation, especially in the proliferation, maturation, and differentiation of lymphocytes. Its role has been studied in inflammation and malignancy.

Double-stranded RNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR), an intracellular pathogen recognition receptor, is involved both in insulin resistance in peripheral tissues and in downregulation of pancreatic β-cell function in a kinase-dependent manner, indicating PKR as a core component in the progression of type 2 diabetes. PKR also acts as an adaptor protein via its protein-binding domain. Here, the PKR protein-binding function promoted β-cell proliferation without its kinase activity, which is associated with enhanced physical interaction with tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 2 (TRAF2) and TRAF6.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play crucial roles in the development and progression of human cancers, including gastric cancer. The discovery of miRNAs may provide a new and powerful tool for studying the mechanism, diagnosis, and treatment of gastric cancer. Here we show that miR-181a levels were significantly downregulated in gastric cancer tissues compared with the adjacent normal regions in 80 paired samples.

July 2016

Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Pediatrics, Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, Emory University School of Medicine, 1760 Haygood Drive NE, HSRB E363, Atlanta, GA 30322 USA.

AMD3100, also known as plerixafor, was originally developed as an anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) drug, and later characterized as a C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) antagonist. Previous reviews have focused on the application of AMD3100 in the treatment of HIV, but a comprehensive evaluation of AMD3100 in the treatment of leukemia, solid tumor, and diagnosis is lacking. In this review, we broadly describe AMD3100, including the background, functional mechanism and clinical applications.
