January 2025

Department of Cardiology, The Affiliated Huaian No.1 People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, No. 1, Huanghe Xi Lu, Huaiyin District, Huaian City, 223300, Jiangsu Province, China.

This study aimed to examine the role and molecular mechanism of the nuclear factor κB (NFκB)/serine protease inhibitor A3 (SerpinA3) interaction in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. First, a rat model for myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury was established, using 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride to measure the size of the myocardial infarction. Pathological variations in myocardial tissue were detected using hematoxylin-eosin staining.

  • The study investigates how azilsartan affects heart structure changes after a heart attack (AMI) in patients undergoing treatment.
  • 200 AMI patients were randomly assigned to receive either azilsartan or benazepril, with their heart function assessed through various tests over a year.
  • Results showed that azilsartan led to better heart size and function improvement compared to benazepril, suggesting it could be effective for managing heart changes post-AMI.

Article Synopsis
  • Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a chronic lung disease affecting preterm infants, and oxygen therapy used to treat BPD can inadvertently cause lung damage due to high oxygen levels.
  • A study identified the PVT1/IL-33 axis's role in BPD; hyperoxia exposure increased RNA levels of IL-33 and PVT1, leading to lung cell apoptosis.
  • Silencing PVT1 was found to reduce apoptosis and improve lung function, suggesting that targeting the PVT1/IL-33 pathway could be a potential treatment strategy for lung injuries in BPD.

Bronchial asthma is not considered a singular disease, but rather a collection of syndromes with multiple phenotypes and mechanisms that involve various signaling pathways. It typically emerges during the preschool years, and its etiology is intricate and diverse. In recent years, the advancement of high-throughput sequencing technology has revealed that early alterations in lung microbiota may be associated with asthma incidence and progression.

Novel, pathogenic insertion variant of GSDME associates with autosomal dominant hearing loss in a large Chinese pedigree.

J Cell Mol Med

January 2024

Key Laboratory of Epigenetics and Oncology, The Research Center for Preclinical Medicine, Southwest Medical University, Luzhou, China.

Nonsyndromic hearing loss (NSHL) is a genetically diverse, highly heterogeneous condition characterised by deafness, and Gasdermin E (GSDME) variants have been identified as directly inducing autosomal dominant NSHL. While many NSHL cases associated with GSDME involve the skipping of exon 8, there is another, less understood pathogenic insertion variant specifically found in Chinese pedigrees that causes deafness, known as autosomal dominant 5 (DFNA5) hearing loss. In this study, we recruited a large Chinese pedigree, conducted whole-exome and Sanger sequencing to serve as a comprehensive clinical examination, and extracted genomic DNA samples for co-segregation analysis of the members.

Glioma is the most common and malignant tumor of the central nervous system. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive glioma, with a poor prognosis and no effective treatment because of its high invasiveness, metabolic rate, and heterogeneity. The tumor microenvironment (TME) contains many tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), which play a critical role in tumor proliferation, invasion, metastasis, and angiogenesis and indirectly promote an immunosuppressive microenvironment.

DLX4 was originally identified as a β-globin gene suppressor in red blood cells, which plays critical roles in several types of cancers. However, the role and related mechanism of DLX4 in NSCLC are still unclear.
