Rapid Engineering of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccine and Challenge Viruses.

J Virol

August 2017

Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, Gimcheon City, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea

There are seven antigenically distinct serotypes of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), each of which has intratypic variants. In the present study, we have developed methods to efficiently generate promising vaccines against seven serotypes or subtypes. The capsid-encoding gene (P1) of the vaccine strain O1/Manisa/Turkey/69 was replaced with the amplified or synthetic genes from the O, A, Asia1, C, SAT1, SAT2, and SAT3 serotypes.

is a trematode that causes zoonosis, mainly in cattle and sheep, and occasionally in humans. Few recent studies have determined the infection status of this fluke in Korea. In August 2015, we collected 402 samples of freshwater snails at Hoenggye-ri (upper stream) and Suha-ri (lower stream) of Song-cheon (stream) in Daegwalnyeong-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun in Gangwon-do (Province) near many large cattle or sheep farms.

Background And Purpose: We aimed to develop and validate a grading scale for predicting 30-day mortality and 90-day functional outcome in patients with primary pontine hemorrhage (PPH).

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed records of consecutive patients with first-ever pontine hemorrhage from 3 teaching hospitals between 2005 and 2012. Independent factors associated with 30-day mortality were identified by logistic regression to establish a risk stratification scale, named the new PPH score.

The effects of microvesicles on endothelial progenitor cells are compromised in type 2 diabetic patients via downregulation of the miR-126/VEGFR2 pathway.

Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab

May 2016

Clinical Research Center and Department of Cardiology, The Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical College, Zhanjiang, Guangdong, China; Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and

Our previous study showed that circulating microvesicles (cMVs) of diabetic mice have negative effects on the function of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Whether this is true in diabetic patients deserves further study. In this study, the effects of cMVs and EPC-derived MVs (EPC-MVs) on EPC migration, apoptosis, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in healthy controls, well-controlled, and uncontrolled diabetic patients were investigated.

MicroRNA-495 regulates starvation-induced autophagy by targeting ATG3.

FEBS Lett

March 2016

Guangdong Key Laboratory of Age-related Cardiac-cerebral Vascular Disease, Institute of Neurology, Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical College, Zhanjiang, China.

The functions of some essential autophagy genes are regulated by microRNAs. However, an ATG3-modulating microRNA has never been reported. Here we show that the transcription of miR-495 negatively correlates with the translation of ATG3 under nutrient-deprived or rapamycin-treated conditions.

The present study aimed to evaluate the expression of microRNA-155 (miR-155) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and adjacent normal tissues, and assess its correlation with clinicopathological characteristics of this tumor type. miR-155 expression was detected in 40 HCC tissue samples and 40 samples of adjacent tumor-free tissue using fluorescent reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The association between miR-155 expression, clinicopathological features and 1-year relapse-free survival (RFS) in HCC and adjacent normal tissue samples was analyzed.

The activity of a local renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in the adipose tissue is closely associated with obesity-related diseases. However, the mechanism of RAS activation in adipose tissue is still unknown. In the current study, we found that palmitic acid (PA), one kind of free fatty acid, induced the activity of RAS in 3T3-L1 adipocytes.

Recent studies demonstrated that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have a critical role in the regulation of cancer progression and metastasis. However, little is known about the mechanism through which metastasis-associated lung adencarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1) exerts its oncogenic activity, and the interaction between MALAT1 and microRNA remains largely unknown. In the present study, we reported that MALAT1 was upregulated in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) tissues.

Our previous study indicates microRNA-506 (miR-506) is downregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In the current study, we investigate the effects of miR-506 on proliferation, migration and invasion in HCC. We report that enforced expression of miR-506 inhibits proliferation, migration and invasion in vitro, and suppresses tumor growth in vivo.

Fascioliasis, a food-borne trematode zoonosis, is a disease primarily in cattle and sheep and occasionally in humans. Water dropwort (Oenanthe javanica), an aquatic perennial herb, is a common second intermediate host of Fasciola, and the fresh stems and leaves are widely used as a seasoning in the Korean diet. However, no information regarding Fasciola species contamination in water dropwort is available.

Interleukin (IL)-23 and IL-12 are closely related in structure, and these cytokines regulate both innate and adaptive immunity. However, the precise signaling networks that regulate the production of each in Toxoplasma gondii-infected THP-1 monocytic cells, particularly the PI3K/AKT and MAPK signaling pathways, remain unknown. In the present study, T.

However, little is known whether lncRNA regulated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cell radioresistance. In the present study, we found that MALAT1 was significantly upregulated in NPC cell lines and tissues.

Autophagy dysfunction upregulates beta-amyloid peptides via enhancing the activity of γ-secretase complex.

Neuropsychiatr Dis Treat

August 2015

Department of Neurology, The Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Medical College, Zhanjiang, Gangdong Province, People's Republic of China ; Institute of Neurology, Gangdong Medical College, Zhanjiang, Gangdong Province, People's Republic of China.

Numerous studies have shown that autophagy failure plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, including increased expression of beta-amyloid (Aβ) protein and the dysfunction of Aβ clearance. To further evaluate the role of autophagy in Alzheimer's disease, the present study was implemented to investigate the effects of autophagy on α-secretase, β-secretase, or γ-secretase, and observe the effects of autophagy on autophagic clearance markers. These results showed that both autophagy inhibitor and inducer enhanced the activity of α-, β-, and γ-secretases, and Aβ production.

Aims And Background: Endostatin can inhibit tumor endothelial cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and growth. We aimed to determine the increase in antitumor capabilities of recombinant human endostatin (rhES) when used with a nanocarrier system. The effect of gold nanoshell particles of recombinant human endostatin (G-rhES) with near-infrared (NIR) irradiation on proliferation, inhibition, and apoptosis of A549 lung cancer cells was studied.

Concurrent chemoradiotherapy has proven to be more effective on patients with advanced cervical cancer than radiotherapy alone. Although cisplatin has been recommended to be the standard agent in chemotherapy, it has some limitations in clinical use because of its strong side effects. Moreover, the optimal chemotherapy regimen remains unclear.

Objective: It's difficult to differentiate sepsis from non-sepsis, especially non-infectious SIRS, because no good standard exists for proof of infection. Soluble CD14 subtype (sCD14-ST), recently re-named presepsin, was identified as a new marker for the diagnosis of sepsis in several reports. However, the findings were based on the results of individual clinical trials, rather than a comprehensive and overall estimation.
