Background: Postpartum stress urinary incontinence significantly impacts the quality of life and the physical and mental health of women. A reliable predictive model for postpartum stress urinary incontinence can serve as a preventive tool. Currently, there have been numerous studies developing predictive models to assess the risk of postpartum stress urinary incontinence, but the quality and clinical applicability of these models remain unknown.

Objectives: The current study developed an ultrasound-based deep learning model to make preoperative differentiation among hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), and combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-ICC).

Methods: The B-mode ultrasound images of 465 patients with primary liver cancer were enrolled in model construction, comprising 264 HCCs, 105 ICCs, and 96 cHCC-ICCs, of which 50 cases were randomly selected to form an independent test cohort, and the rest of study population was assigned to a training and validation cohorts at the ratio of 4:1. Four deep learning models (Resnet18, MobileNet, DenseNet121, and Inception V3) were constructed, and the fivefold cross-validation was adopted to train and validate the performance of these models.

The molecular mechanisms underlying obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and its comorbidities may involve mitochondrial dysfunction. However, very little is known about the relationships between mitochondrial dysfunction-related genes and OSA. Mitochondrial dysfunction-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between OSA and control adipose tissue samples were identified using data from the Gene Expression Omnibus database and information on mitochondrial dysfunction-related genes from the GeneCards database.

PGC-1 Protects against Hepatic Ischemia Reperfusion Injury by Activating PPAR and PPAR and Regulating ROS Production.

Oxid Med Cell Longev

December 2021

Key Laboratory of Hepatosplenic Surgery, Ministry of Education, Department of General Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, Harbin 150001, China.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) and have been shown to be protective in hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, the precise role of PPAR coactivator-1 (PGC-1), which can coactivate both of these receptors, in hepatic I/R injury, remains largely unknown. This study was designed to test our hypothesis that PGC-1 is protective during hepatic I/R injury in vitro and in vivo.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is a multifactorial pathological process associated with low back pain in which nucleus pulposus cell senescence is disrupted. Increasing evidence reveals that IVDD can be modulated by microRNAs (miRNAs or miRs). In the current study, we set out to elucidate the role of miR-199a-5p in nucleus pulposus cell apoptosis and IVDD progression.

The role of microRNA in cisplatin resistance or sensitivity.

Expert Opin Ther Targets

September 2020

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery; The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin, NT , Hong Kong, China.

Introduction: Cisplatin is a chemotherapy drug that has been used to treat a number of cancers for decades, and is still one of the most commonly used anti-cancer agents. However, some patients do not respond to cisplatin while other patients who were originally sensitive to cisplatin eventually develop chemoresistance, leading to treatment failure or/and tumor recurrence.

Areas Covered: Different mechanisms contribute to cisplatin resistance or sensitivity, involving multiple pathways or/and processes such as DNA repair, DNA damage response, drug transport, and apoptosis.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is often clinically silent before rupture characterized by extensive vascular inflammation and degenerative elasticity of aortic wall. Monocyte chemotactic protein-induced protein-1 (MCPIP1) exhibits anti-infllammatory and pro-apoptotic effects involved in atherogenesis. However, little is known about the expression and the contribution of MCPIP1 in AAA.
