Background: Hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) has shown satisfactory therapeutic efficacy in unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and is regarded as an important conversion treatment. However, limited information is available regarding the optimal timing of HAIC-based conversion hepatectomy. This study aims to determine the optimal timing for HAIC-based conversion surgery in patients with HCC.

Article Synopsis
  • Current risk stratification systems for thyroid nodules lack specificity, prompting a study to refine fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy criteria based on a large sample of thyroid nodules from Chinese hospitals between 2017 and 2021.
  • The modified ACR and AI TI-RADS guidelines resulted in increased specificity and accuracy while lowering the unnecessary FNA rate, although a slight reduction in sensitivity was observed.
  • No significant differences were found between the modified ACR and AI TI-RADS in terms of diagnostic performance, suggesting both revisions are equally effective in improving risk assessment.

Background: This study aimed to establish and validate nomograms to predict the probability of recurrence and recurrence-free survival (RFS) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after conversion hepatectomy based on hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC).

Methods: Nomograms were constructed using data from a retrospective study of 214 consecutive patients treated with HAIC-based conversion liver resection between January 2016 and July 2020. Nomograms predicting the probability of tumor recurrence and RFS were established based on predictors selected by multivariate regression analysis.

Secondary osteoporosis is triggered mostly by glucocorticoid (GC) therapy. Dexamethasone (DEX) was reported to inhibit osteogenic differentiation in zebrafish larvae and MC3T3-E1 cells in prior research. In this research, we primarily examined the protective impacts of epimedin C on the osteogenic inhibition impact of MC3T3-E1 cells and zebrafish larvae mediated by DEX.

Department of Ultrasound, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Collaborative Innovation Center for Cancer Medicine, No. 651 Dongfeng Road East, Guangzhou, 510060, People's Republic of China.

Objective: To determine if artificial intelligence-based modification of the Thyroid Imaging Reporting Data System (TI-RADS) would be better than the current American College of Radiology (ACR) TI-RADS for risk stratification of thyroid nodules.

Methods: A total of 2061 thyroid nodules (in 1859 patients) sampled with fine-needle aspiration or operation were retrospectively analyzed between January 2017 and July 2020. Two radiologists blinded to the pathologic diagnosis evaluated nodule features in five ultrasound categories and assigned TI-RADS scores by both ACR TI-RADS and AI TI-RADS.

Pharmacological targeting PIKfyve and tubulin as an effective treatment strategy for double-hit lymphoma.

Cell Death Discov

January 2022

Department of Hematology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University and Institute of Hematology, School of Medicine, Xiamen University, 361003, Xiamen, China.

Double-hit lymphoma is one of the most aggressive and refractory lymphoma subtypes with recurrent genetic abnormalities of MYC and BCL-2 or BCL6 rearrangement, leading to a poor prognosis in the present clinical practice. Therefore, new therapeutic strategies for eliminating double-hit lymphomas are urgently needed. Here, we reported that HZX-02-059, a novel PIKfyve and tubulin dual-target inhibitor, showed a highly cytotoxic activity against double-hit lymphoma cell lines in vitro and in vivo through a noncanonical caspase-independent cell death, methuosis.

Constitutively activated BCR-ABL kinase is considered the driver event responsible in the initiation and development of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The advent of the first BCR-ABL inhibitor imatinib has significantly improved the clinical outcome of CML cases. However, resistance to imatinib occurs in 25-30% of CML patients.

Objective: Paraquat (N,N0-dimethyl-4,40-bipyridinium dichloride;PQ) is a highly toxic pesticide, which usually leads to acute lung injury and subsequent development of pulmonary fibrosis. The exact mechanism underlying PQ-induced lung fibrosis remain largely unclear and as yet, no specific treatment drugs have been approved. Our study aimed to identify its potential mechanisms of PQ-induced fibrosis through a modeling study studies and bioinformatics analysis.

October 2023

Department of Medical Ultrasonics, Division of Interventional Ultrasound, Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Ultrasound, The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.

Purpose: To discuss the possible reasons why percutaneous intratumoral ethanol injection (PEI) combined with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) to treat hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) reduced the recurrence and metastasis compared with RFA alone.

Materials And Methods: Forty VX2 tumor-bearing rabbits were randomly divided into four groups ( = 10): the PEI, RFA, PEI-RFA, and control groups. Five rabbits from each group were sacrificed on the 3rd and 7th days after ablation.

Previous studies have shown that prenatal stress (PS) can potentially contribute to depression-like behavior in offspring and that this effect may be moderated by cross-fostering. However, the underlying mechanism of this effect remains to be determined. This study aimed to determine the effect of cross-fostering on the expression of EAAT2 and the SNARE complex in the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex of PS offspring rats and to demonstrate functional effects on depression-like behavior.

Prenatal stress (PS) affects neurodevelopment and increases the risk for anxiety in adolescence in male offspring, but the mechanism is still unclear. N-Cadherin regulates the expression of AMPA receptors (AMPARs), which mediate anxiety by modulating network excitability in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Our results revealed that in adolescent male, but not female, offspring rats, PS induced anxiety-like behavior, as assessed by the open field test (OFT).
