Artificial molecular motors in biological applications.

Front Mol Biosci

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Thyroid Disease, Medical Research Center, The Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University, Qingdao University, Qingdao, China.

Molecular motors are the cornerstone for the maintenance of living systems and mediate almost all fundamental processes involved in cellular trafficking. The intricate mechanisms underlying natural molecular motors have been elucidated in detail, inspiring researchers in various fields to construct artificial systems with multi-domain applications. This review summarises the characteristics of molecular motors, biomimetic approaches for their design and operation, and recent biological applications.

Background: Wound healing is a complex and dynamic process that involves a series of cellular and molecular events. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their exosomes (MSC-Exos) have crucial functions in cutaneous wound healing. MiR-17-92 is a multifunctional microRNA (miRNA) cluster that plays vital roles in tissue development and tumor angiogenesis.

Laboratory of Molecular Diagnosis and Regenerative Medicine, Medical Research Center, The Affiliate Hospital of Qingdao University, Qingdao, 266000, People's Republic of China.

Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a heterogeneous group of subpopulations with differentially expressed surface markers. CD146 + MSCs correlate with high therapeutic and secretory potency. However, their therapeutic efficacy and mechanisms in premature ovarian failure (POF) have not been explored.

Aberrant ENPP2 expression promotes tumor progression in multiple myeloma.

Leuk Lymphoma

April 2022

Laboratory of Molecular Diagnosis and Regenerative Medicine, the Affiliate Hospital of Qingdao University, Qingdao, P. R. China.

Ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 2 (ENPP2) has been recently linked to tumor development. However, its role in modulating multiple myeloma (MM) disease progression remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that CD138+ cells isolated from MM patients presented with higher expression of ENPP2 compared with CD138- cells.

Chiglitazar (Carfloglitazar) is a novel non-thiazolidinedione (TZD) structured peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) pan-agonist that has shown promising effects on glycemic control and lipid regulation in patients with type 2 diabetes in previous clinical studies. This randomized phase 3 trial aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of chiglitazar with placebo in patients with type 2 diabetes with insufficient glycemic control by strict diet and exercise alone. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to receive chiglitazar 32 mg (n = 167), chiglitazar 48 mg (n = 166), or placebo (n = 202) once daily.

Hypoxia affects proliferation, differentiation, as well as death of cardiomyocyte, and plays an important role in the development of myocardial ischemia. However, the detailed mechanisms through which hypoxia regulates cardiomyocyte ferroptosis have not been explored. In this study, we revealed that hypoxia suppresses the proliferation, migration, and erastin-induced ferroptosis of H9c2 cells.

Tetanus consists of neonatal tetanus and non-neonatal tetanus. Although neonatal tetanus in China has been eliminated since 2012, non-neonatal tetanus remains a serious public health problem. Non-neonatal tetanus is a potential fatal disease, and the mortality rate of severe cases is almost 100% in the absence of medical intervention.
