Lures and other adaptations for prey attraction are particularly interesting from an evolutionary viewpoint because they are characterized by correlational selection, involve multicomponent signals, and likely reflect a compromise between maximizing conspicuousness to prey while avoiding drawing attention of enemies and predators. Therefore, investigating the evolution of lure and prey-attraction adaptations can help us understand a larger set of traits governing interactions among organisms. We review the literature focusing on spiders (Araneae), which is the most diverse animal group using prey attraction and show that the evolution of prey-attraction strategies must be driven by a trade-off between foraging and predator avoidance.

Sexual assertiveness is often conceptualized as an individual's ability to express one's own sexual needs, desires, and limits. Given that sexual assertiveness is embedded in interactions and can affect not only both partners' sexual well-being but also relationship satisfaction, dyadic approaches are needed to investigate sexual assertiveness negotiation within adolescent romantic relationships. This qualitative study aimed to document adolescents' ability to negotiate their sexual needs, desires, and limits with their partners during interactions where they discussed their sexual concerns.

In this context, this study examined how peer victimization at the beginning of middle school is linked with subsequent student achievement. Antibacterial nonwoven fabrics, incorporated with Ag, have been applied as masks and air conditioner filters to prevent the spread of disease from airborne respiratory pathogens. In this work, we present a comparison study of Ag ions: Ag and AgCu nanoparticles (NPs) coated onto nonwoven fabrics intended for use as air conditioner antibacterial filters. We illustrate their color changes and durability running in air conditioners using antibacterial activity testing and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopic (XPS) analysis.

We report an additive-free one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of Au, Ag, Pd, and alloy AuPd nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on commercial polyurethane (PU) foams. While unable to reduce the precursor metal salts at room temperature, PU is able to serve as a reducing agent under hydrothermal conditions. The resulting NP@PU sponge materials perform comparably to reported state-of-the-art reduction catalysts, and are additionally very well suited for use in semi-automated synthesis: the NP anchoring is strong enough and the support flexible enough to be used as a 'catalytic sponge' that can be manipulated with a robotic arm, , be repeatedly dipped into and drawn out of solutions, wrung out, and re-soaked.

The assembly of biomimetic, planar supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) by the popular vesicle fusion method, which relies on the spontaneous adsorption and rupture of small unilamellar vesicles from aqueous solution on a solid surface, typically works with a limited range of support materials and lipid systems. We previously reported a conceptual advance in the formation of SLBs from vesicles in the gel or fluid phase using the interfacial ion-pairing association of charged phospholipid headgroups with electrochemically generated cationic ferroceniums bound to a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) chemisorbed to gold. This redox-driven approach lays down a single bilayer membrane on the SAM-modified gold surface at room temperature within minutes and is compatible with both anionic and zwitterionic phospholipids.

Peptides with the ability to self-assemble into nanoparticles have emerged as an attractive strategy to design antigen delivery platforms for subunit vaccines. While toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists are promising immunostimulants, their use as soluble agents is limited by their rapid clearance and off-target inflammation. Herein, we harnessed molecular co-assembly to prepare multicomponent cross-β-sheet peptide nanofilaments exposing an antigenic epitope derived from the influenza A virus and a TLR agonist.

Planar microcavities with strong light-matter coupling, monolithically processed fully from solution, consisting of two polymer-based distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) comprising alternating layers of a high-refractive-index titanium oxide hydrate/poly(vinyl alcohol) hybrid material and a low-refractive-index fluorinated polymer are presented. The DBRs enclose a perylene diimide derivative (b-PDI-1) film positioned at the antinode of the optical mode. Strong light-matter coupling is achieved in these structures at the target excitation of the b-PDI-1.

The cabbage seedpod weevil (CSW), , an exotic pest accidentally introduced in North America in 1931, spread all over this continent and is now a major pest of canola crops. One of its main natural enemies in Europe, , was observed in eastern Canada in 2009. This study aimed to evaluate the landscape influence on CSW infestation and abundance and on parasitism in Quebec to understand the optimal conditions to potentially release this parasitoid in the Canadian Prairies.
