The need for sustainable and environment-friendly materials has led to growing interest in the development of biodegradable polymers based on natural compounds. However, metal-based catalysts used in the polymerization process may cause concerns about the toxicity of the resultant polymers. Therefore, polymers derived from natural compounds and synthesized through the use of green catalysts are highly desirable.

Marsupials are born very immature yet must be sufficiently autonomous to crawl on the mother's belly, find a teat and attach to it to pursue their development. Sensory inputs are necessary to guide the newborn to a teat and induce attachment. The vestibular system, which perceives gravity and head movements, is one of the senses proposed to guide newborns towards the teats but there are conflicting observations about its functionality at birth (postnatal day (P) 0).

The aim of this paper is to explain why, while Charles Darwin was well recognized as a scientific leader of his time, Claude Bernard never really regarded Darwinism as a scientific theory. The lukewarm reception of Darwin at the Académie des Sciences of Paris and his nomination to a chair only after 8 years contrasts with his prominence, and Bernard's attitude towards Darwin's theory of species evolution belongs to this French context. Yet we argue that Bernard rejects the scientific value of Darwinian principles mainly for epistemological reasons.

Events of groundwater recharge are associated with changes in the composition of aquifer microbial communities but also abiotic conditions. Modification in the structure of the community can be the result of different environmental condition favoring or hindering certain taxa, or due to the introduction of surface-derived taxa. Yet, in both cases, the local hydrogeochemical settings of the aquifer is likely to affect the amount of variation observed.

In this article, we describe a study conducted online with 953 participants of varying levels of education and, when applicable, science/physics teaching experience. These participants were asked to solve a cognitive task in which many different pairs of objects were presented and to identify which, if any, would touch the ground first when dropped (in atmospheric or non-atmospheric environments). Recorded accuracies and response times allowed us to conduct an analysis based on the conceptual prevalence framework, which posits that the coexistence of conceptual and/or resources can produce interference in response production.

In aquatic ecosystems, microalgae are exposed to light fluctuations at different frequencies due to daily and seasonal changes. Although concentrations of herbicides are lower in Arctic than in temperate regions, atrazine and simazine, are increasingly found in northern aquatic systems because of long-distance aerial dispersal of widespread applications in the south and antifouling biocides used on ships. The toxic effects of atrazine on temperate microalgae are well documented, but very little is known about their effects on Arctic marine microalgae in relation to their temperate counterparts after light adaptation to variable light intensities.

Studies examining the associations between adolescent social media use and depression/anxiety symptoms show inconsistent results and do not elucidate the direction of associations. Differences in how studies operationalize social media use and consider potential moderating effects of sex and extraversion could contribute to inconsistencies. A distinction has been made between three types of social media use: passive, active and problematic.

Unlabelled: Effectively communicating pain is crucial for human beings. Facial expressions are one of the most specific forms of behavior associated with pain, but the way culture shapes expectations about the intensity with which pain is typically facially conveyed, and the visual strategies deployed to decode pain intensity in facial expressions, is poorly understood. The present study used a data-driven approach to compare two cultures, namely East Asians and Westerners, with respect to their mental representations of pain facial expressions (experiment 1, =60; experiment 2, =74) and their visual information utilization during the discrimination of facial expressions of pain of different intensities (experiment 3; =60).

Emotion regulation difficulties have been found to predict relationship satisfaction in adult samples, yet little is known with regards to the processes explaining these associations in adolescent dating relationships. Furthermore, among the available literature, most studies only consider one romantic partner. To address this gap, this study used a dyadic approach and considered the role of conflict resolution strategies (i.

In a study of whether somatosensory feedback related to articulatory configuration is involved in speech perception, 30 French-speaking adults performed a speech discrimination task in which vowel pairs along the French /u/ (rounded vowel requiring a small lip area) to /œ/ (rounded vowel associated with larger lip area) continuum were used as stimuli. Listeners had to perform the test in two conditions: with a 2-cm-diameter lip-tube in place (mimicking /œ/) and without the lip-tube (neutral lip position). Results show that, in the lip-tube condition, listeners perceived more stimuli as /œ/, in line with the proposal that an auditory-somatosensory interaction exists.

Detailed mechanistic investigations of the interrelated roles of multiple key structure-directing agents in the growth solution of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) is required for the optimization of synthetic protocols. Here, we report a robust seed-mediated growth strategy for synthesizing multibranched NPs (MB-AuNPs) with monodispersed size distribution, and investigate the roles of Ag ions and 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine-1-ethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) based on an overgrowth synthesis approach. The intertwining roles of Ag , surface-capping stabilizers, and reducing agents were elucidated, and used to control the morphology of MB-AuNPs.

In this review, recent advances that exploit the intrinsic emission of organic materials for reversibly modulating their intensity with applied potential are surveyed. Key design strategies that have been adopted during the past five years for developing such electrofluorochromic materials are presented, focusing on molecular fluorophores that are coupled with redox-active moieties, intrinsically electroactive molecular fluorophores, and unconjugated emissive organic polymers. The structural effects, main challenges, and strides toward addressing the limitations of emerging fluorescent materials that are electrochemically responsive are surveyed, along with how these can be adapted for their use in electrofluorochromic devices.

The short-wave infrared (SWIR) is an underexploited portion of the electromagnetic spectrum in metasurface-based nanophotonics despite its strategic importance in sensing and imaging applications. This is mainly attributed to the lack of material systems to tailor light-matter interactions in this range. Herein, this limitation is addressed and an all-dielectric silicon-integrated metasurface enabling polarization-induced Fano resonance control at SWIR frequencies is demonstrated.
