Background: Osteosarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome associated with an increased risk of frailty, falls, fractures, disability, and death. Calf circumference (CC) has been used as a simple and practical skeletal muscle marker to diagnose sarcopenia. This study aimed to explore the relationship of calf circumference and osteoporosis (OP) and hip fractures (HF) in middle-aged and older adults.

Ambient particulate matter (PM) exposure is a known risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Epidemiological studies have shown the association between PM exposure and vascular complications, including vasculitis, embolism, hypertension, stroke, and atherosclerosis. However, the exact mechanisms underlying its vascular toxicity, especially in relation to short-term exposures, remain incompletely understood.

Early diagnosis of tumors is becoming increasingly important in modern healthcare. As studies have demonstrated, Poly(ADP)ribose polymerase-1 (PARP-1) is overexpressed in more aggressive tumors. Consequently, sensitive detection of PARP-1 activity holds significant practical importance in clinical diagnostics and biomedical research.

Background: This study investigated the association between coronary artery calcification (CAC) and triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI) in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis (MHD).
Methods: We used computed tomography (CT) to assess coronary artery calcification score (CACS) using the Agatston method. The TyG index was multiplied by BMI to derive the TyG-BMI index.

Astrocytes, characterized by complex spongiform morphology, participate in various physiological processes, and abnormal changes in their calcium (Ca) signaling are implicated in central nervous system disorders. However, medications targeting the control of Ca have fallen short of the anticipated therapeutic outcomes in clinical applications. This underscores the fact that our comprehension of this intricate regulation of calcium ions remains considerably incomplete.

Passive radiative cooling (PRC) is an emerging sustainable technology that plays a key role for achieving the goal of carbon neutrality. However, several challenges remain for PRC materials in their practical application in building thermal management, including overcooling problems and unsatisfactory cooling efficiency caused by solar absorption and parasitic heat gains. In this work, fluorinated cellulose-based composite aerogels (FCCA) integrating thermal insulation and PRC were developed by a facile manufacturing strategy that combined phase separation and freeze-drying.

The rate of success of epilepsy surgery, ensuring seizure-freedom, is limited by the lack of epileptogenicity biomarkers. Previous evidence supports the critical role of functional connectivity during seizure generation to characterize the epileptogenic network (EN). However, EN dynamics is highly variable across patients, hindering the development of diagnostic biomarkers.

Bacterial infection and inadequate osseointegration represent significant challenges in the application of titanium (Ti)-based bone implants. Surface modification presents a promising strategy to address these obstacles. Taking advantage of silver ions, black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNs) and polydopamine (PDA), this study developed a versatile platform on the surface of Ti-12Mo-10Zr (TMZ) alloy through a multiple surface modification process, including the anodic oxidation treatment of TMZ alloy, the preparation and addition of silver-loaded BPNs (BPNs/Ag), and the coating with PDA.

There has been an increase in the use of the extreme value theory (EVT) approach for conflict-based crash risk estimation and its application such as conducting the evaluation of safety countermeasures. This study proposes a cross-sectional approach for evaluating the effectiveness of a right-turn safety treatment using a conflict-based EVT approach. This approach combines traffic conflicts of different sites at the same period and develops the generalized extreme value (GEV) models.

Collapsible loess soils, known for their significant volume reduction upon the wetting, pose critical challenges in the geotechnical engineering. The estimation of the wetting-induced settlement is crucial for the foundation design and the determination of the negative skin friction on the pile. In this paper, a new method is proposed to estimate the wetting induced collapse from the wetting soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) and the index properties of the loess soils.

Spectrum sensing is a key technology and prerequisite for Transform Domain Communication Systems (TDCS). The traditional approach typically involves selecting a working sub-band and maintaining it without further changes, with spectrum sensing being conducted periodically. However, this approach presents two main issues: on the one hand, if the selected working band has few idle channels, TDCS devices are unable to flexibly switch sub-bands, leading to reduced performance; on the other hand, periodic sensing consumes time and energy, limiting TDCS's transmission efficiency.

Insulin-like growth factor II mRNA-binding proteins (IGF2BPs), a family of RNA-binding proteins, are pivotal in regulating RNA dynamics, encompassing processes such as localization, metabolism, stability, and translation through the formation of ribonucleoprotein complexes. First identified in 1999 for their affinity to insulin-like growth factor II mRNA, IGF2BPs have been implicated in promoting tumor malignancy behaviors, including proliferation, metastasis, and the maintenance of stemness, which are associated with unfavorable outcomes in various cancers. Additionally, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), particularly long non-coding RNAs, circular RNAs, and microRNAs, play critical roles in cancer progression through intricate protein-RNA interactions.

Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) exploits the powerful representational capabilities of deep neural networks (DNNs) and has achieved significant success. However, compared to DNNs, spiking neural networks (SNNs), which operate on binary signals, more closely resemble the biological characteristics of efficient learning observed in the brain. In SNNs, spiking neurons exhibit complex dynamic characteristics and learn based on principles of biological plasticity.

Porous carbon adsorption represents a critical component of CCUS technologies, with microporous structures playing an essential role in CO capture. The preparation of porous carbon introduces intrinsic defects, making it essential to consider both pore size and these defects for a comprehensive understanding of the CO adsorption mechanism. This study investigates the mechanisms of CO adsorption influenced by intrinsic defects and pore size using multiscale methods, incorporating experimental validation, Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations, and Density Functional Theory simulations.

This paper investigates the probabilistic-sampling-based asynchronous control problem for semi-Markov reaction-diffusion neural networks (SMRDNNs). Aiming at mitigating the drawback of the well-known fixed-sampling control law, a more general probabilistic-sampling-based control strategy is developed to characterize the randomly sampling period. The system mode is considered to be related to the sojourn-time and undetectable.

In this paper, a recurrent neural network is proposed for distributed nonconvex optimization subject to globally coupled (in)equality constraints and local bound constraints. Two distributed optimization models, including a resource allocation problem and a consensus-constrained optimization problem, are established, where the objective functions are not necessarily convex, or the constraints do not guarantee a convex feasible set. To handle the nonconvexity, an augmented Lagrangian function is designed, based on which a recurrent neural network is developed for solving the optimization models in a distributed manner, and the convergence to a local optimal solution is proven.

Nanometer-thick ultrathin coatings with superior mechanical strength and desirable lubricating and antifouling performance are critical for the miniaturization of implantable medical devices. However, integrating these properties at the nanoscale remains challenging due to the inherent trade-off between mechanical strength and hydration as well as limitations in coating thickness. In this work, we address these challenges by employing dual-function metal coordination to construct a ∼25 nm thick bilayer structure.

Tumor whole-cell vaccines are designed to introduce a wide range of tumor-associated antigens into the body to counteract the immunosuppression caused by tumors. In cases of lymphoma of which the specific antigen is not yet determined, the tumor whole-cell vaccine offers distinct advantages. However, there is still a lack of research on an effective preparation method for the lymphoma whole-cell vaccine.
