Cardiovascular alterations are common in patients who had ischaemic stroke, haemorrhagic stroke and other acute brain disorders such as seizures. These cardiac complications are important drivers of morbidity and mortality and comprise blood-based detection of cardiomyocyte damage, ECG changes, heart failure and arrhythmia. Recently, the concept of a distinct 'stroke-heart syndrome' has been formulated as a pathophysiological framework for poststroke cardiac complications.

Background: A double-blind, randomized, active-controlled, parallel-group, noninferiority trial (NCT03345342) demonstrated that paliperidone palmitate once-every-6-months (PP6M) was noninferior to paliperidone palmitate once-every-3-months (PP3M) in preventing relapse in clinically stable adults with schizophrenia. This post hoc analysis assessed efficacy and safety following transition to PP6M from paliperidone once-monthly (PP1M) versus PP3M.
Methods: Adults with schizophrenia who were clinically stable on moderate/high doses of PP1M or PP3M were randomly assigned 1:2 to dorsogluteal PP3M or PP6M treatment for 12 months.

This study investigates the differences in the heart response to an 8-week high-fat diet between young and aged mice. Isolated cardiomyocytes reveal a significant lower level in the lipid droplet-associated protein Plin5 in aged mice. High-fat diet, however, leads to an induction of Plin5 in aged mice and a low-response of lipid metabolism, whereas in cardiomyocytes from young animals the Plin5 level was largely unaffected by high-fat diet whereas several lipid metabolizing enzymes were induced.

The chromosomal theory of inheritance dictates that genes on the same chromosome segregate together while genes on different chromosomes assort independently. Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) are common in cancer and drive oncogene amplification, dysregulated gene expression and intratumoural heterogeneity through random segregation during cell division. Distinct ecDNA sequences, termed ecDNA species, can co-exist to facilitate intermolecular cooperation in cancer cells.

Background: Hospital re-admissions in heart failure (HF) patients are mostly caused by an acute exacerbation of their chronic congestion. Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) has emerged as a promising non-invasive method to assess the volume status in HF. However, its correlation with clinically assessed volume status and its prognostic value in the acute intra-hospital setting remains uncertain.

Cilia are membrane-bound organelles found on the surface of most mammalian cell types and play numerous roles in human physiology and development, including osmo- and mechanosensation, as well as signal transduction. Ciliopathies are a large group of, usually rare, genetic disorders resulting from abnormal ciliary structure or ciliary dysfunction that have a high collective prevalence. Autosomal dominant or recessive polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD/ARPKD), Bardet-Biedl-Syndrome, and primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) are the most frequent etiologies.

Introduction: Cognitive control is a prerequisite for successful, goal-oriented behavior. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is assumed to be a key player in applying cognitive control; however, the neural mechanisms by which this process is accomplished are still unclear.
Methods: To further address this question, an audiovisual Stroop task was used, comprising simultaneously presented pictures and spoken names of actors and politicians.

Introduction: While cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders (ADs) has been proven to be effective and is commonly recommended, a considerable proportion of patients remain symptomatic, do not respond to treatment or discontinue it. Thus, augmentation strategies aimed at enhancing CBT outcomes are essential to reduce the burden of OCD and ADs on patients and society. Various augmentation strategies for CBT in OCD and ADs have been investigated, yet it remains unclear if they show robust beneficial effects beyond first-line CBT.

Accumulation of the age pigment lipofuscin represents a ubiquitous hallmark of the aging process. However, our knowledge about cellular effects of lipofuscin accumulation is potentially flawed, because previous research mainly utilized highly artificial methods of lipofuscin generation. In order to address this tremendous problem, we developed a convenient protocol for isolation of authentic lipofuscin from human and equine cardiac tissue in high purity and quantity.
