Background: We investigated hospitalized carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) cases with and without COVID-19, as identified through Emerging Infections Program surveillance in 10 sites from 2020 to 2022.

Methods: We defined a CRE case as the first isolation of , complex, , , , or resistant to any carbapenem. We defined an ESBL-E case as the first isolation of , , or resistant to any third-generation cephalosporin and nonresistant to all carbapenems tested.

Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the proportion of patients with sacral neuromodulation device-associated surgical site infections after use of prophylactic postoperative antibiotics versus none.

Study Design: This was a multicenter retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing sacral neuromodulation device implantation at 11 institutions from January 2014 to December 2023, comparing outcomes in patients who did versus did not receive prophylactic postoperative antibiotic treatment.

Background: Although longer surgical times in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) are associated with higher complication rates, this has yet to be explored in conversion THA. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between surgical time and complications in the setting of conversion THA with implant removal. We aim to establish a length of surgery after which the risk of complications increases.

Methods: Data of 148 accredited medical schools were obtained from the Association of American Medical Colleges Graduation and Matriculating Student Questionnaires to identify self-reported educational debt for graduates pursuing neurology training. Trends were assessed in a 2-year interval from 2010 to 2021.

Previous studies in neonatal mice showed hyperoxia suppresses fatty acid synthesis genes required for proliferation and survival of atrial cardiomyocytes. The loss of atrial cardiomyocytes creates a hypoplastic left atrium that inappropriately fills the left ventricle during diastole.

Caseous Calcification of the Mitral Annulus: Calcified Toothpaste of the Heart.

Caseous calcification of the mitral annulus (CCMA) is a rare variant of mitral annular calcification (MAC) usually described as an antemortem finding. We report a case of sudden cardiac arrest in a 39-year-old male with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis with a history of Fabry disease by kidney biopsy. Autopsy revealed significant circumferential annular calcification in both mitral and aortic valves with a caseous gross appearance.

Background: The 2022 Centers for Disease Control's "Clinical Practice Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids for Pain in United States" called for attention and action toward reducing disparities in untreated and undertreated pain among Black and Latino patients. There is growing evidence for controlled substance safety committees (CSSC) to change prescribing culture, but few have been examined through the lens of health equity. We examined the impact of a primary care CSSC on opioid prescribing, including by patients' race and sex.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrinopathy worldwide with a heterogeneous clinical presentation including reproductive, metabolic, and endocrine elements. However, the assessment and management of PCOS remains inconsistent, with many women undiagnosed and untreated. We now also understand that the management of PCOS should extend throughout a woman's lifespan as many elements of the syndrome persist after menopause.
