Being able to critically evaluate modern cohort studies is important when being presented with claims based on observational evidence. In this review article, key aspects of the cohort design are presented using an example of a cohort study investigating the association between the use of SGLT2 inhibitors and gout. We describe the active comparator, new user design, modern methods used to address confounding, how to identify the most common sources of bias, and how to interpret study results appropriately.

A questionnaire to GP-trainees concerning the assessment of an online portfolio showed that the portfolio provided focus on learning objectives and strengthened the capacity to monitor progress in competence and organisation of practical training. It stimulated knowledge consolidation and reflection in complex clinical situations. The portfolio notes furthermore provided a good starting point for trainer-trainee discussions.

In this article communications problems in health care are illuminated from the perspectives of both adult patients and children. Factors that promote successful communication are described and studies about the effect of communication courses reviewed. Lack of information and responsiveness are among the problems most often reported.

Patients with mechanical heart valves are treated with oral anticoagulant therapy in order to minimize the risk of thromboembolism. During invasive procedures it is recommended to temporarily discontinue the oral anticoagulant therapy and substitute with injections of low-molecular-weight heparin. We describe a case where a patient discontinued the oral anticoagulant therapy and had no substitution with low-molecular-weight heparin.

Introduction: Screening and observation of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) produce psychological stress. Consequently, safe and optimal intervals of rescreening and observation must be developed.
Method: In a randomised, mass screening trial of 6,339 men aged, 65-73 years from 1994 to 1998, 76% attended, and 191 (4%) had AAA > or = 3 cm.

The aim of this study was to describe the changes in frequency and character of interpersonal violence in Aarhus during a twelve year period. A one year (1993-1994) prospective registration of all persons exposed to violence and attending the casualty wards or the Department of Forensic Medicine was performed. The results were compared with similar studies performed in 1981-1982 and 1987-1988.
