Smoking Status in Pregnancy: A Retrospective Analysis in Northern Greece.

Smoking has adverse effects on both maternal and fetal health and its incidence varies among different countries. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of smoking during pregnancy and to identify factors associated with smoking. This was a retrospective study conducted at the Third Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, during an 11-year period (2013-2023).

Aberrant anatomy in the context of the critical view of safety.

Background: The protective impact of the Critical View of Safety (CVS) approach on the vasculo-biliary injuries during laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) depends largely upon the understanding of the normal and variant anatomy. Structures exposed during the acquisition of the CVS can deviate from the typical dual configuration of the cystic duct and artery (gallbladder pedicle) representing either a third (supernumerary) or atypical in course (heterotopic) element. The aim of this study was to determine the identity and the frequency of these anatomical elements and to propose anatomic schemata that can guide the achievement of CVS by surgeons.

Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography: An effective option for endo-biliary radiofrequency ablation before stent insertion in unresectable biliary cancer?

Biliary cancer is a highly aggressive disease that is typically diagnosed at advanced stages when surgical removal is no longer an option. In these cases, palliative care and mechanical widening of the blocked biliary system are preferred. The insertion of a stent is often necessary to prevent the recurrence of blockages caused by cancer progression.

Enhancing Ovarian Tumor Diagnosis: Performance of Convolutional Neural Networks in Classifying Ovarian Masses Using Ultrasound Images.

This study aims to create a strong binary classifier and evaluate the performance of pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to effectively distinguish between benign and malignant ovarian tumors from still ultrasound images. The dataset consisted of 3510 ultrasound images from 585 women with ovarian tumors, 390 benign and 195 malignant, that were classified by experts and verified by histopathology. A 20% to80% split for training and validation was applied within a k-fold cross-validation framework, ensuring comprehensive utilization of the dataset.

Rethinking Fluid Responsiveness during Septic Shock: Ameliorate Accuracy of Noninvasive Cardiac Output Measurements through Evaluation of Arterial Biomechanical Properties.

Beat-to-beat estimates of cardiac output from the direct measure of peripheral arterial blood pressure rely on the assumption that changes in the waveform morphology are related to changes in blood flow and vasomotor tone. However, in septic shock patients, profound changes in vascular tone occur that are not uniform across the entire arterial bed. In such cases, cardiac output estimates might be inaccurate, leading to unreliable evaluation of fluid responsiveness.

Single pulmonary nodules are a difficult to diagnose imagining artifact. Currently novel diagnostic tools such as Radial-EBUS with or not C-ARM flouroscopy, electromagnetic navigation systems, robotic bronchoscopy and cone beam-compuer tomography (CBCT) can assist in the optimal guidance of biopsy equipment. After diagnosis of lung cancer or metastatic disease as pulmonary nodule, then surgery or ablation methods as local treatment can be applied.

Simultaneous Resection for Colorectal and Liver Metastases, new equipment and personalized medicine.

Nowadays we perform synchronous colorectal cancer resection along with synchronous liver metastases. We investigated whether colon resection first is safer than liver resection first and if simultaneous surgeries are in general safe. Twenty patients were included in our multicenter study.

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) is a rare but fulminant infection that spreads along the fascial planes, including connective tissue, muscle, and subcutaneous fat, and is typified by necrosis of the skin and other adjacent tissues. This article aims to present the treatment of a patient with submental skin and soft tissue necrosis due to an odontogenic infection and the subsequent management of the tissue deficit with a vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) system.

The Short-Term Effect of Olive Oil Extract Enriched with Hydroxytyrosol on Cardiovascular Function.

Olive is rich in polyphenols such as hydroxytyrosol (HT) that have antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we examined the short-term effects of olive oil extract (OE) enriched with HT on left atrial function, left ventricular (LV) function, and arterial elastic properties in patients with chronic coronary artery disease (CAD). Sixty-one patients with chronic CAD were enrolled.

Background: rs4977574 gene polymorphism has been associated with arterial thrombosis and cardiovascular disease development. rs4977574 gene polymorphism could also be associated with recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) since there is increasing evidence in favor of a potential shared pathophysiological mechanism with cardiovascular disease, potentially through arterial thrombosis. This study's goal is to investigate the differences in rs4977574 gene polymorphism between women with and without RPL, if any, as well as a potential association with the number of pregnancy losses.

The liver plays a critical role in several metabolic pathways, including the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common chronic liver disease worldwide, is closely associated with insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Exploring preferences of older adults for dental services: A pilot multi-national discrete choice experiment.

Objectives: To pilot an exploration of older adults' future preferences using discrete choice experiments to understand who should provide dental examinations and treatment, where these services should be provided, and participants' willingness to pay and willingness to travel.

Background: The proportion of older adults in the general population is increasing and is recognised as a pressing public health challenge.

Materials And Methods: Older people aged 65 years and over were recruited into this study from the UK, Switzerland and Greece.

Effects of endocrine disrupting compounds on female fertility.

Endocrine Disrupting Compounds or Chemicals (EDCs) constitute an extensive and varied group of mostly non-natural chemicals that have the ability to imitate any aspect of hormone action, perturbing many physiological functions in humans and animals. As for female fertility, several EDCs are associated with adverse effects in the regulation of steroidogenesis, higher miscarriage rates as well as lower fertilization and embryo implantation rates and some of them are considered to decrease the number of high-quality embryos in assisted reproductive technology (ART) pregnancy. The most common EDCs are pesticides, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and especially phthalates and bisphenols which are used in thousands of products as plasticizers.

Seroconversion following a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine in liver transplant recipients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: Although it is well established that 2 doses of COVID‑19 vaccines are associated with reduced immune responses in liver transplant recipients (LTRs), studies regarding their immunogenicity and tolerability after a booster dose are limited.

Objectives: We aimed to review the available literature data regarding antibody responses and safety of the third dose of COVID‑19 vaccines in LTRs.

Our aim was to assess clinical and patient-reported outcome (PRO) profile of CHB patients from different regions of the world using the Global Liver Registry. The CHB patients seen in real-world practices are being enrolled in the Global Liver Registry.

Association of Pressure Wave Reflections With Left Ventricular Mass: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Pressure wave reflections (PWRs) within the circulation are assessed at various arterial sites by various noninvasive methods. We aimed at reviewing the conflicting data regarding the hypothesis that higher PWRs are associated with higher left ventricular mass and tested whether this association stands for all available indices of PWRs, all (proximal or distal to the heart) sites of assessment, and is modified by sex, age and heart rate.

Methods: Based on a predefined protocol applying the Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines, we identified eligible for meta-analysis data regarding: augmentation index, augmentation pressure, backward pressure (Pb), reflection index, and their association with left ventricular mass index (19 studies, total population n=8686).

Background: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) and bariatric surgery have proven to be effective treatments for obesity and cardiometabolic conditions. We aimed to explore the early metabolomic changes in response to GLP-1RA (liraglutide) therapy vs. placebo and in comparison to bariatric surgery.

Effect of Aromatase Inhibitors on Serum Calprotectin Levels in an Animal Experimental Model: Trial.

Background/aim: Utilizing an experimental animal model, we investigated the correlation between aromatase inhibitors (AIs) (anastrozole and letrozole) and Calprotectin levels. AIs have demonstrated superior efficacy when used as adjuvant endocrine therapy or monotherapy for postmenopausal patients with hormone receptor (HR)-positive early-stage breast cancer, although various side effects have been recorded.

Incidence of autoantibodies related to systemic autoimmunity in patients with severe COVID-19 admitted to the intensive care unit.

Objectives: To assess the prevalence of autoantibodies (AAbs) in mechanically ventilated COVID-19 patients and to investigate whether AAbs influence the clinical outcome.

Methods: Serum samples were drawn within the first 48 hours upon admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) from 217 consecutive patients, from January 1st, 2021, to May 10th, 2021, and investigated for the presence of AAbs using conventional techniques. Serum samples (n=117) of age- and sex-matched healthy individuals collected before COVID-19 pandemic were used as controls.

Cure of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) can lead to improvement of health-related quality of life and other patient-reported outcomes (PROs). While extensive PRO data for CHC patients who were enrolled in clinical trials are available, similar data for patients seen in real-world practices are scarce. Our aim was to assess PROs of CHC patients enrolled from real-world practices from different regions and to compare them with those enrolled in clinical trials.
