Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effectiveness of sanguinarine, a natural compound, against oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), aiming to understand its mechanism of action.
  • Through extensive screening of drug libraries, sanguinarine was identified as a potent inhibitor that disrupts lysosomal function and impairs autophagic clearance in OSCC cells.
  • The research highlights sanguinarine's interaction with pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2), leading to the inhibition of crucial cellular processes that contribute to OSCC progression.

SPP1+ macrophages promote head and neck squamous cell carcinoma progression by secreting TNF-α and IL-1β.

J Exp Clin Cancer Res

December 2024

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial-Head and Neck Oncology, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a very aggressive disease characterized by a heterogeneous tumor immune microenvironment (TIME). Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) constitute the major innate immune population in the TIME where they facilitate crucial regulatory processes that participate in malignant tumor progression. SPP1 + macrophages (SPP1 + Macs) are found in many cancers, but their effects on HNSCC remain unknown.

Aims: Previous studies suggested that structural and functional connectivity of right frontotemporal circuits associate with music perception. Emerging evidences demonstrated that structure-function coupling is important for cognition and may allow for a more sensitive investigation of brain-behavior association, while we know little about the relationship between structure-function coupling and music perception.

Methods: We collected multimodal neuroimaging data from 106 participants and measured their music perception by Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Amusia (MBEA).

There is an urgent necessity to devise efficient tactics to tackle the inevitable development of resistance to osimertinib, which is a third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor used in treating EGFR-mutant nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study demonstrates that combining itraconazole with osimertinib synergistically reduces the proliferation and migration, enhances the apoptosis of osimertinib-resistant cells, and effectively inhibits the growth of osimertinib-resistant tumors. Mechanistically, itraconazole combined with osimertinib promotes the proteasomal degradation of sonic hedgehog (SHH), resulting in inactivation of the SHH/Dual-specificity phosphatase 13B (DUSP13B)/p-STAT3 and Hedgehog pathways, suppressing Myc proto-oncogene protein (c-Myc).

This article proposes a novel approach for improving the efficiency of fragrance designing and the accuracy of automatic fragrance formula creation based on empirical fragrance formulas and graph traversal algorithms. By effectively extracting the composition information and further analyzing the combination of fragrance materials in 210 fragrance formulas, a relational network model was constructed in the form of a graph to illustrate the relationship between the ingredients used in the formulas. Additionally, a fragrance ingredients information database of 344 common ingredients was constructed and used as a reference for perfumers when setting algorithmic constraints based on their experience.

It is time to reevaluate the lard in glucose homeostasis and diabetes pathogenesis.

NPJ Sci Food

December 2024

Hunan Engineering Research Center of Livestock and Poultry Health Care, College of Veterinary Medicine, Hunan Agricultural University, Changsha, Hunan, 410128, China.

Most modern dietary guidelines recommend limiting lard and animal fats due to their potential link to metabolic diseases. Nevertheless, emerging evidence suggests that lard may not significantly contribute to diabetes and that moderate lard intake could even benefit lipid metabolism. This commentary suggests a reevaluation of lard’s classification as a “bad actor” in the context of diabetes, urging colleagues to give greater consideration to and empirically validate this intriguing hypothesis.
