Non-O1/non-O139 Vibrio cholerae (NOVC) strains are a distinct group of Vibrio cholerae that do not cause epidemic cholera. NOVC infections usually cause mild forms of gastroenteritis, and rarely severe (extra)intestinal infections, mostly affecting immunocompromised patients. Here, we describe the clinical course of a patient with NOVC bacteremia causing multiple liver abscesses, after drinking from a freshwater well in a non-coastal area.

Background: An important aspect of the shift towards dried blood spots (DBS) as a sample matrix for laboratory measurements, is the availability of robust liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) methods that can reliably quantify analyte concentrations in DBS. The development and validation of these LC-MS/MS methods, however, concerns an extensive process, for which large amounts of DBS samples are required. DBS are usually obtained from capillary blood samples, but they can also be prepared from venous (residual) blood samples, which are widely available in clinical laboratories.

Dysregulated intercellular communication is a key feature driving cancer progression. Recently, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have added a new channel to this dense communication network. Despite solid evidence that EVs are central mediators of dysregulated signaling in onco-pathological settings, this has yet to be translated into clinically actionable strategies.

Aim: The miRNA cargo of plasma extracellular vesicles (EVs) is commonly studied for its biomarker potential. However, isolation of EVs from human plasma is challenging. Although size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) is commonly used to isolate plasma EVs, SEC does not completely separate EVs from other miRNA carriers such as cells, lipoproteins, and proteins.

Microvascular brain endothelial cells tightly limit the entry of blood components and peripheral cells into the brain by forming the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The BBB is regulated by a cascade of mechanical and chemical signals including shear stress and elasticity of the adjacent endothelial basement membrane (BM). During physiological aging, but especially in neurological diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke, small vessel disease, and Alzheimer's disease (AD), the BBB is exposed to inflammation, rigidity changes of the BM, and disturbed cerebral blood flow (CBF).

DNA methylation of host-cell genes is an epigenetic process that regulates gene expression and is associated with cervical cancer development. Studies on the natural history of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and the molecular alterations associated with cervical carcinogenesis led to the identification of several host-cell DNA methylation markers. Over the past years, various studies on methylation markers have shown promising results in terms of diagnostic and prognostic value to improve cervical cancer screening and management of CIN.

The repair of large cartilage defects remains highly challenging in the fields of orthopedics and oral and maxillofacial surgery. A chondroinductive agent is promising to activate endogenous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) so as to facilitate cartilage regeneration. In this study, we analyze the crystallographic data of the critical binding domain of transforming growth factor β3 (TGF-β3) with its type II receptor and successfully develop a novel chondroinductive peptide - TGF-β3-derived peptide No.

Throughout adulthood and ageing our brains undergo structural loss in an average pattern resembling faster atrophy in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Using a longitudinal adult lifespan sample (aged 30-89; 2-7 timepoints) and four polygenic scores for AD, we show that change in AD-sensitive brain features correlates with genetic AD-risk and memory decline in healthy adults. We first show genetic risk links with more brain loss than expected for age in early Braak regions, and find this extends beyond APOE genotype.

Purpose: In postoperative breast irradiation, changes in the breast contour and arm positioning can result in patient positioning errors and offline replanning. This can lead to increased treatment burden and strain on departmental logistics because of the need for additional cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images or even a new radiation therapy treatment plan (TP). Online daily adaptive radiation therapy (oART) could provide a solution to these challenges.

High-risk HPV (hrHPV)-based screening has led to many unnecessary colposcopy referrals, mainly because of direct referral after low-grade cytology (ASC-US/LSIL). DNA methylation and genotyping tests on ASC-US/LSIL samples have the potential to significantly improve the efficiency of screening. In this study, 12 triage strategies were constructed from FAM19A4/miR124-2 or ASCL1/LHX8 methylation, HPV16/18 or HPV16/18/31/33/45 genotyping and 1-year repeat cytology.

Human musicality might have co-evolved with social cognition abilities, but common neuroanatomical substrates remain largely unclear. In behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia, social cognitive abilities are profoundly impaired, whereas these are typically spared in Alzheimer's disease. If musicality indeed shares a neuroanatomical basis with social cognition, it could be hypothesized that clinical and neuroanatomical associations of musicality and social cognition should differ between these causes of dementia.

Background: Elderly care physicians (ECPs) in nursing homes document patients' health, medical conditions, and the care provided in electronic health records (EHRs). However, much of these health data currently lack structure and standardization, limiting their potential for health information exchange across care providers and reuse for quality improvement, policy development, and scientific research. Enhancing this potential requires insight into the attitudes and behaviors of ECPs toward standardized and structured recording in EHRs.
