Purpose: While only a few postmenopausal women exhibit biochemical signs of hypovitaminosis D, it has been shown that vitamin D insufficiency has detrimental effects on the overall skeleton mineralization, bone turnover rate, and may be a significant risk factor for osteoporosis and fracture. We evaluated the concurrent effect of Vitamin D levels and biochemical markers of bone turnover on bone health of postmenopausal women.
Methods: The present study was conducted within the framework of the Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program, a population-based prospective cohort study being conducted in Bushehr, a southern province of Iran.

Compound nerve action potentials (CNAPs) were used as a metric to assess the stimulation performance of a novel high-density, transverse, intrafascicular electrode in rat models. We show characteristic CNAPs recorded from distally implanted cuff electrodes. Evaluation of the CNAPs as a function of stimulus current and calculation of recruitment plots were used to obtain a qualitative approximation of the neural interface's placement and orientation inside the nerve.

Three new methods for accurate electronic component positioning for thermoformed electronics are presented in this paper. To maintain the mechanical and electrical properties of printed-ink tracks, prevent deformation and stretching during thermoforming, and ensure reproducibility, the component positioning principle for all three proposed methods is based on keeping the temperature of some regions in the thermoplastic substrate less than the glass transition temperature of the thermoplastic carrier, to keep those regions resistant to plastic deformation. We have verified the accuracy of the different approaches by implementing these methods in a semi-sphere mold for positioning seven LEDs and one printed capacitive touch sensor.

Surface functionalization with biological macromolecules is an important task for the development of sensor materials, whereby the interaction with other biological materials should be suppressed. In this work, we developed a novel multifunctional poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline)-dithiolane conjugate as a versatile linker for gold surface immobilization of amine-containing biomolecules, containing poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) as antifouling polymer, dithiolane for surface immobilization, and activated esters for protein conjugation. First, a well-defined carboxylic acid containing copoly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) was synthesized by cationic ring-opening copolymerization of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline with a methyl ester-containing 2-oxazoline monomer, followed by postpolymerization modifications.

Digital microfluidics (DMF) holds great potential for the alleviation of laboratory procedures in assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs). The electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) technology provides dynamic culture conditions in vitro that may better mimic the natural embryo microenvironment. Despite all the psychological advantages of alprazolam, its long list of toxic properties and interactions has caused concern and highlighted the need for a reliable sensing method. In this study, we developed a simple, highly sensitive electrochemical nanobiosensor to determine the desirable dose of alprazolam, averting the undesirable consequences of overdose. Gold nanourchins (AuNUs) and iron-nickel reduced graphene oxide (Fe-Ni@rGO) were immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode, which was treated beforehand.

Ultra-violet (UV) light has still a limited scope in optical microscopy despite its potential advantages over visible light in terms of optical resolution and of interaction with a wide variety of biological molecules. The main challenge is to control in a robust, compact and cost-effective way UV light beams at the level of a single optical spatial mode and concomitantly to minimize the light propagation loss. To tackle this challenge, we present here photonic integrated circuits made of aluminum oxide thin layers that are compatible with both UV light and high-volume manufacturing.

Electrical stimulation of gametes and embryos and on-chip manipulation of microdroplets of culture medium serve as promising tools for assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs). Thus far, dielectrophoresis (DEP), electrorotation (ER) and electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) proved compatible with most laboratory procedures offered by ARTs. Positioning, entrapment and selection of reproductive cells can be achieved with DEP and ER, while EWOD provides the dynamic microenvironment of a developing embryo to better mimic the functions of the oviduct.

Acrylate-based photo-cross-linked poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) tends to show low elongation and strength. Incorporation of osteo-inductive hydroxyapatite (HAp) further enhances this effect, which limits its applicability in bone tissue engineering. To overcome this, the thiol-ene click reaction is introduced for the first time in order to photo-cross-link PCL composites with 0, 10, 20, and 30 wt % HAp nanoparticles.

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the association between VDR gene polymorphism and the occurrence of "low bone density (LBD)/osteopenia/osteoporosis" or LBDOO in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients among a clustered population in northwest of Iran. The studied VDR gene polymorphism included (rs7975232), (rs1544410), (rs2228570), (rs4516035) and, (rs731236).
Methods: In this population-based cross-sectional study, patients with T2D were identified within a group of 1266 participants based on self-report of diabetes, history of diabetes medication, and recorded laboratory data.

This work explores the feasibility of coupling two different techniques, the impedance and the transient plane source (TPS) principle, to quantify the moisture content and its compositional parameters simultaneously. The sensor is realized directly on textiles with the use of printing and coating technology. Epilepsy is a chronic, neurological disorder affecting millions of people every year. The current available pharmacological and surgical treatments are lacking in overall efficacy and cause side-effects like cognitive impairment, depression, tremor, abnormal liver and kidney function. In recent years, the application of optogenetic implants have shown promise to target aberrant neuronal circuits in epilepsy with the advantage of both high spatial and temporal resolution and high cell-specificity, a feature that could tackle both the efficacy and side-effect problems in epilepsy treatment.
